  • Punjab speaker moves ECP for disqualification of 26 pro-Imran MPAs

Punjab speaker moves ECP for disqualification of 26 pro-Imran MPAs

Punjab Assembly Speaker Malik Muhammad Ahmad Khan has filed disqualification reference with the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) against 26 Members of the Provincial Assembly (MPA), citing unparliamentary conduct, rioting, and repeated violation of assembly rules.

On June 27, 2025, during a Punjab Assembly Session, opposition MPAs staged protests and caused a disruption in proceedings. In response, Speaker Khan suspended the membership of 26 MPAs- 17 were listed as belonging to the Sunni Ittehad Council (SIC)- for the next 15 sittings of the provincial legislature.

The members reportedly raised slogans during Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz’s June 27 speech in the assembly.

According to an order issued by Speaker Khan, the suspended legislators “became disorderly, beyond all parliamentary reasoning and practices,” including tearing agenda papers and hurling torn pieces towards the treasury benches as well as using “offensive, abusive, and unparliamentary language and slogans”.

Khan, in his order, said he repeatedly tried to call the assembly to order, but the opposition “declined to act per the Rules and persisted with misconduct and disorder and kept challenging my orders and authority”.

The speaker Khan added that opposition MPAs had “disregarded [his] authority as speaker […] consistently and willfully obstructing the business of the assembly”.

The suspension order was issued under Rule 210 of the Punjab Assembly Rules of Procedure 1997, stating that the 26 MPAs violated four provisions of Rule 223, which were (c) (shall not interrupt any member while speaking by disorderly expression or noises or in any other disorderly manner), (f) (shall maintain silence when not speaking in the assembly), (h) (shall not chant slogans, display banners or placards, throw and tear table documents and reports, etc), and (i) (shall not indulge in rowdy behaviour).

Malik Fahad Masood, Muhammad Tanvir Aslam, Syed Riffat Mehmood, Yasir Mehmood Qureshi, Kalimullah Khan, Muhammad Ansar Iqbal, Ali Asif, Zulfiqar Ali, Ahmed Mujtaba Chaudhry, Shahid Javed, Muhammad Ismail, Khayal Ahmed, Shehbaz Ahmed, Tayyab Rashid, Imtiaz Mehmood, Ali Imtiaz, Rashid Tufail, Murtaza Iqbal, Khalid Zubair, Ijaz Shafi, Saima Kanwal, Muhammad Naeem, Sajjad Ahmed, Rana Aurangzeb, Shoaib Mir and Usama Asghar Ali Gujjar were among members, suspended by the provincial speaker.

Meanwhile, Media reports claim that the speaker visited the ECP office in Islamabad to formally submit the disqualification reference, which include evidence of the MPAs’ disorderly actions. The ECP is expected to review the references and decide on the lawmakers’ fate in accordance with legal provisions.

Pakistan will compete in Hockey Asia Cup in India, media reports claim

Pakistan is set to participate in the 12th edition of the Hockey Asia Cup in India after receiving diplomatic approval from Indian authorities, according to Indian media reports.

The tournament is scheduled to take place in Rajgir from August 27 to September 7, 2025.

Pakistan’s participation had been uncertain amid tense relations between the two countries, but India’s sports ministry has confirmed that there are no objections to Pakistan competing in this multi-nation event.

According to the Press Trust of India (PTI), a ministry spokesperson said, “We are not against any team competing in India in a multi-national competition. But bilateral is different.”

However, the Pakistan Hockey Federation (PHF) has stated that the team’s participation in India depends on government approval. PHF Secretary General Rana Mujahid has previously said that Pakistan will only compete in the Asia Cup if the government grants permission.

While the clearance allows Pakistan to travel, it remains to be seen whether the Pakistan Hockey Federation will agree to send the team across the border or request a hybrid model for some matches, similar to recent cricket arrangements.

The Hockey Asia Cup is an important qualifying event for the 2026 Men’s FIH Hockey World Cup, making Pakistan’s participation crucial as they aim to revive their proud hockey legacy.

Saqib Sumeer recounts terrifying experience coming face-to-face with a jinn

Pakistani actor Saqib Sumeer has revealed the most terrifying experience of his life when he encountered a girl allegedly possessed by a jinn.

Speaking on a recent TV program, Saqib shared how a casual friendship with two neighbours turned into something he would never forget.

“I was living in a rented house, and two girls lived next door. We met on the rooftop, became friends, and started spending time together,” he recalled.

One day, during a rooftop chat, the girls confided in him that one of them was possessed by a jinn.

“They told me that a jinn would come and take over one of them. They were very worried because they lived alone,” Saqib explained.

Wanting to help, he offered his support. “I told them that whenever it happens, they should call me. I’ll try to help.”

    Soon after, the moment arrived.

“One day, when the jinn possessed [the girl] and she started having seizures, she asked me for help. But I didn’t feel comfortable going to their house because I knew people would start making stories. So, I called her to my house instead,” he said.

What happened next shook him to the core.

“When the jinn appeared, all her hair scattered over her face and she started making strange noises. I got so scared, I began silently reciting Surah An-Naas in my heart,” he said.

    But then something terrifying happened.

“I was shocked when the jinn looked at me and said, ‘Stop reciting.’ That’s when I started trembling,” he revealed.

Despite the fear, Saqib stayed strong and continued helping the girls through the frightening experience.

“It was the scariest moment of my life, something I will never forget,” he concluded.

India again blocks social media accounts of Pakistani artists, cricketers

India has once again blocked the social media accounts of several Pakistani actors and cricketers, reigniting a digital divide amid ongoing political tensions between the two countries.

According to media reports, the Indian government had quietly lifted restrictions on Tuesday, temporarily restoring access to the Instagram accounts of Pakistani celebrities such as Mawra Hocane, Saba Qamar, Ahad Raza Mir, Yumna Zaidi, and Danish Taimoor, as well as cricketers Shahid Afridi and Shoaib Akhtar.

The first ban this year was imposed following the April 22 Pahalgam attack in Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), which further escalated the Pakistan-India standoff.

In response, the All Indian Cine Workers Association (AICWA) demanded that the Indian government impose an immediate and permanent ban on the digital presence of Pakistani artists and cricketers.

Shortly after this demand, access to the social media accounts of many Pakistani celebrities and cricketers was once again restricted in India.

Now, after a brief unban, the accounts are once again inaccessible to users in India.

  • Naqvi credits Pak army, PM with Iran-Israel ceasefire

Naqvi credits Pak army, PM with Iran-Israel ceasefire

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi has revealed that Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif and Pakistan’s military played a role in assisting with brokering a ceasefire between Iran and Israel.

Speaking to the media following a meeting with religious scholars in Islamabad on Thursday, Naqvi said that the prime minister had played a “big role” in the development in June, adding, “There is also a wardi [uniform] behind the ceasefire,” referring to Pakistan’s military.

He lauded that “our leader played a big role in convincing world leaders” in the Iran-Israel ceasefire, stressing, “Pakistan should be proud that as Muslims we played our role.”

On June 13, Israel launched attacks on Iran targeting the country’s nuclear sites to eliminate any possibility of Tehran developing nuclear weapons. Israel is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, which it neither confirms nor denies.

Iran claims its nuclear programme is for internal, civilian purposes only, while Iranian officials have repeatedly said they do not plan to develop nuclear weapons but will pursue their right to nuclear energy and research.

Tensions, however, intensified in the Middle East when the United States (US) became directly involved in the conflict, striking Iran’s nuclear facilities, including Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan.

In retaliation, Iran launched missiles, targeting US bases in Qatar. Shortly after the attack, the US President, in a post on Truth Social, announced a ceasefire between Israel and Iran, ending the 12-day-long conflict.

Last week, Chief of Army Staff Field Marshal Asim Munir reportedly received a call from Iran’s top military commander, with Tehran thanking Islamabad for its support during the war with Israel.

During the conversation, Major General Abdolrahim Mousavi, Chief of Staff of the Iranian Armed Forces, praised Islamabad’s “courageous stance” during the crisis, crediting Pakistan for standing by Tehran as Israeli strikes targeted senior military commanders, nuclear scientists, and civilians, including women and children.

Recounting the conflict between Pakistan and India earlier in May, the interior minister said that one of the missiles was mistakenly fired due to a numerical error; however, Naqvi claimed it ended up hitting an Indian oil depot.

He said that when the missile was fired, “everyone got worried that it might hit civilian areas; however, divine help came, and that missile hit their [India] biggest oil depot”.

Naqvi further claimed that India launched around 11 missiles at one of Pakistan’s air bases, revealing, “We were worried that if they fell, it would cause destruction; believe me, not a single missile hit the target. It proves the divine help.”

According to media reports, a vehicle left the road near Zamora, and the incident indicates a tyre burst while overtaking. The car caught fire after the crash, killing both people inside. Pending final forensic tests, one of the deceased has been identified as Liverpool FC player Diogo Jota, along with his brother, Andre Felipe.

The tragedy comes just ten days after Jota married his long-term girlfriend, Rute Cardoso. He had three children.

Jota, 28, joined Liverpool from Wolverhampton Wanderers in 2020 and scored 65 goals in 182 appearances for the club. He played a key role in helping Liverpool win the Premier League, FA Cup, and League Cup, and scored six goals in their recent Premier League-winning season.

Man murders girlfriend’s groom-to-be to stop wedding

Two suspects have been arrested in Pattoki for allegedly murdering a groom-to-be in an attempt to stop his wedding, police said on Thursday.

According to Saddar Police Station officials, the suspects, Azhar Manzoor and Sajid, were captured after a specialized police team used modern technology to track them down and verify their involvement in the crime.

Investigators revealed that the suspects shot 25-year-old Umar Shehzad dead on the rooftop of his home seven days before his wedding, while he was spending time there ahead of the ceremony.

Police stated that Azhar, the primary suspect, was reportedly in a relationship with the victim’s fiancée and wanted to prevent the marriage from taking place.

Investigators believe Azhar planned the attack together with his accomplice Sajid to eliminate the groom-to-be.

The victim was killed immediately when the suspects reached his home, climbed to the rooftop, and opened fire.

They fled the area after the shooting, but authorities were able to locate and apprehend them after gathering forensic evidence and examining call logs.

In a separate incident, police arrested a suspect in the Sundar area of Lahore Division, accused of killing a young woman on her wedding day.

DIG Investigation Syed Zeeshan Raza stated that the deceased, Ayesha Habiba, was shot dead by the suspect, Ikram, her brother-in-law, after a fight over a marriage proposal.

Police said the suspect fled immediately after the murder but was tracked and arrested shortly afterward.

DIG Raza stated that strict action would be taken against those involved in such heinous crimes.
