  • Mohammad Yousuf made a U-turn, joins Pakistan squad for New Zealand tour

Mohammad Yousuf made a U-turn, joins Pakistan squad for New Zealand tour

Former Test cricketer Mohammad Yousuf, recently appointed as the Pakistan cricket team’s batting consultant, initially withdrew from the New Zealand tour but later reversed his decision and confirmed his availability.

According to reports, Yousuf initially informed the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) that he would not be travelling with the team for personal reasons. However, just a few hours later, he confirmed his participation.

He was uncertain about joining the team while his daughter was unwell. However, after receiving reassurance from doctors about her improving health, he decided to rejoin the squad.

He said in a statement, “Doctors have confirmed that my daughter is doing better, so I have decided to travel with the team. Representing Pakistan is a national duty, and I am committed to fulfilling it.”

The PCB appointed Mohammad Yousuf as the team’s batting consultant for the New Zealand tour. However, reports revealed that Yousuf initially informed the board of his decision not to travel for personal reasons. The board has decided not to appoint a replacement for him.

The Pakistan cricket team is set to depart for New Zealand on 12 March, where they will play five T20 Internationals and three One Day Internationals (ODIs).

For the T20 series, Salman Ali Agha has been named the new captain, with Shadab Khan as vice-captain. Notably, Mohammad Rizwan, Babar Azam, and Naseem Shah have been dropped from the T20 squad.

Similarly, the ODI squad has undergone six changes, with Shaheen Shah Afridi, Mohammad Hasnain, and Usman Khan being left out.

Earlier, following the ICC Champions Trophy, Aaqib Javed’s tenure as interim head coach was set to expire. However, the PCB extended his contract by three months. Due to the national team’s poor performance, Shahid Aslam was removed from his role, and Mohammad Yousuf was appointed as the new batting coach.

The PCB confirmed that Aaqib Javed will continue as interim head coach for the New Zealand tour, with an extension until a permanent head coach is appointed.

The team’s support staff for the New Zealand tour includes Naveed Akram Cheema (Team Manager), Aaqib Javed (Interim Head Coach), Azhar Mahmood (Assistant Coach), Mohammad Yousuf (Batting Coach), Mohammad Masroor (Fielding Coach), Cliff Deacon (Physiotherapist), Drex Simon (Strength and Conditioning Coach), Talha Butt (Analyst), Irtiza Kamil (Security Manager), Dr. Wajid Ali Rafi (Team Doctor), Syed Naeem Ahmed (Media and Digital Manager), and Sergio Basil Mullins (Masseur).

With Yousuf confirming his availability, the Pakistan team heads to New Zealand with a complete coaching and support staff lineup.

Over 400 passengers taken hostage as terrorists attack Peshawar-bound train in Balochistan

A train carrying over 400 passengers was hijacked on Tuesday by terrorists in the Bolan area of Balochistan.

Amid conflicting reports on which terror group the attackers belonged to, a clearance operation was launched by security agencies to free the hostages which include dozens of women and children.

As per the details of the attack, militants wounded the driver and took control of the Peshawar-bound Jaffar Express from Quetta as it was crossing the Peru Kanri area of Kach district.

The attackers, reports said, blew up the railway track and later opened fire on the train. A heavy exchange of fire between the militants and security personnel, allegedly aboard the train, was also reported.

While there hasn’t been an official confirmation on the presence of security personnel aboard the train, security sources told The Current that despite the extremely difficult terrain, law enforcement had reached the scene and a clearance operation had been initiated against the attackers “who are in contact with their foreign facilitators”.

The operation, they said, would continue till all terrorists were eliminated.

Meanwhile, the provincial government has imposed an emergency at local hospitals and said that all resources were being utilised to deal with the situation.

  • Sheikh Waqas Akram sends Rs1 billion legal notice to Fawad Chaudhry

Sheikh Waqas Akram sends Rs1 billion legal notice to Fawad Chaudhry

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Central Information Secretary Sheikh Waqas Akram has served a legal notice of one billion rupees in defamation to former federal minister Fawad Chaudhry over false, frivolous and derogatory statements.

PTI’s official X (formerly Twitter) handle posted the notice on Monday. The notice demands that the former federal Minister for Information and Broadcasting Fawad Chaudhry issue a public apology within 14 days. Failure to do so will result in legal action being initiated against him.

In February 2025, Chaudhry launched a scathing attack against PTI leaders, including Raoof Hassan and Akram, after the party issued a statement condemning his violent altercation with lawyer Shoaib Shaheen outside Adiala Jail Rawalpindi on February 15.

Chaudhry wrote that Akram started his career as a courier. “Now, he is enjoying luxury at the expense of PTI’s funding and the provincial budget,” Chaudhry alleged in a post on X.

He went on to write a series of allegations against PTI’s political committee, saying that it was involved in the embezzlement of public funds.

“The majority of members in PTI’s political committee […] have embezzled millions in party funds. They refuse to be held accountable for funds collected in the name of Imran Khan [PTI founder] and party workers,” Chaudhry alleged.

According to the notice, Chaudhry used his official social media accounts, including X and various YouTube channels, to level unfounded allegations against Akram. Chaudhry’s statements accused Akram of conspiring against PTI, causing political harm, and being involved in corruption worth billions.

The notice claims that former PTI leader Fawad Chaudhry made false, baseless, and defamatory statements that were broadcasted on media against Akram, damaging the latter’s political reputation and affecting his public standing.

“That pursuant to your insinuating and insulting statements on media, the fame and reputation of my client in the eyes of family members, friends, colleagues, politicians, political workers, members of PTI, acquaintances, and general public nationally and internationally has been tarnished smeared and sullied. You deliberately and willfully tried to impair the reputable image of my client for undue gains without any cogent, convincing and strong evidence of the alleged defamatory and derogatory statements published/posted on media,” the notice read.

“….Your (Fawad Chaudhry’s) false and defamatory statements were also published in all print media, including the Current, Dawn, ARY News (website), the Urdu Point, AAJ News, Nawaiwaqt and a number of other newspapers,” the notice further noted.

As per the notice, failure to tender an unconditional apology to Akram or inability to pay one billion rupees as damages within the stipulated time, the PTI Central Information Secretary would be at liberty to initiate legal proceedings against Chaudhry.
