The youth hired to kill the man was identified as Usman. As per the police, he was allegedly hired by Imtiaz, deceased Muhammad Riaz’s brother-in-law, over a property dispute.

A police official informed the media that Imtiaz had a disagreement with his wife, which prompted him to hire a hitman to get her brother-in-law killed.

Previously, Imtiaz had transferred his house to his wife’s name, but after a domestic dispute, he demanded it back.

However, his wife refused to give it back, stating that she needed to consult her brother Riaz before making any decision. This aggravated the situation and led to a heated argument.

Provoked by the heated exchanges, Imtiaz’s wife left his home and moved in with her brother Riaz.

Enraged, Imtiaz allegedly hired Usman and promised him Umrah tickets and a motorbike to kill his brother-in-law Riaz. ARY News has reported that Imtiaz had also promised Rs. 30,000 as payment along with the tickets and motorcycle.

Sabzazaar police in Lahore tracked the suspects using the network of cameras monitored by Safe City Authority and examining call data records.

Investigating officers said that the killer was tracked through a phone call received on the deceased’s mobile phone. The victim was killed when he was shopping with his wife in the Badami Bagh area of Lahore when the hitman, accompanied by Imtiaz, arrived at the scene and shot him dead.

Police claim that the hitman even attended Riaz’s funeral.

The police arrested the shooter and are conducting raids for the arrest of the mastermind behind the killing.

  • Retired Major jailed for life in kidnapping case

Retired Major jailed for life in kidnapping case

An Anti Terrorism Court (ATC) has given a life sentence to two men, including a retired Major, in a case pertaining to the abduction of a businessman for a ransom of Rs 16 million.

The court convicted Major (retd) Nawazish Akbar and a civilian named Naveed Khan on charges of abducting Sher Bahadur, a businessman from Karachi.

The victim was kidnapped when he was returning from the district Malir court 17 years ago. The amount of cash received by the abductors was seven million in cash, and jewellery was worth nine million in ransom.

ATC judge sentenced the convicts to life imprisonment along with three years for wrongful confinement and seven years for robbing the victim’s car.

Additionally, the court ordered the confiscation of the convicts’ property.

Sher Bahadur’s brother lodged a complaint stating that the accused, Major (retd) Nawazish, was a five per cent business partner with his brother, who owned a construction company.

Despite reaching a compromise, Nawazish signed a written agreement with an assurance to settle the amount after the business dispute. However, instead of paying the amount, the retired major allegedly threatened his brother of dire consequences.

Later, on June 6, 2006, the complainant and his brother’s vehicle was intercepted by Nawazish, along with his accomplices Haji Zaman, Amir Khan, Fareed Ahmed, Naveed, and Nadeem, on their way back from Malir Court.

They abducted Sher Bahadur and took him to an unknown location.

The state prosecutor informed the court that the complaint was lodged against the abductors one and a half years after the incident.

The complainant was informed that his brother would be released after the business dispute was solved.

The complainant told the court that he established a construction company in 2004 and gave a five per cent share to his employee, Nawazish.

However, an audit revealed embezzlement by Nawazish and another employee, Naveed.

Following the audit, the accused reportedly submitted written declarations apologising for the financial appropriations.

In his testimony, the brother further said that months later, these two employees conspired against him and got him arrested in a five million rupees cheque dishonour case.

He testified in front of the court that the convict took over his office premises “illegally” while he was on the judicial remand.

Resultantly, he terminated the services of both Nawazish and Naveed over allegations of fraud.

Describing his six-month-long captivity, the victim alleged that the convict confined him to a room where his accomplices-Haji Zaman and Aamir-said to be associated with the Taliban, made various attempts to make him a suicide bomber.

He was frequently visited by the retired Major.

In the meanwhile, Nawazish had transferred 95 percent of the company’s shares to Haji Zaman and sold assets worth Rs 20 million.

He further claimed that after he was released on medical grounds, he filed petitions in the Sindh High Court in 2008 and 2014 in a bid to get the Major arrested and recovery of his assets.

The court noted in its verdict that both the accused persons did not deny the declarations, adding that based on the first impression, “they have committed misappropriation/fraud of Rs7,000,000, which they have to return to the abductee, so their conduct itself proves that they were involved in the fraud or cheating in his company.”

The court made an observation about the delay of the challan form by quoting, “The involvement of influential individuals, notably the accused Nawazish Akbar, a retired Major, contributed to the delay, further evidenced by the prolonged delay of 17-18 years in submitting the challan.”

“His testimony was supported by over 700 pages of documentary evidence, which detailed the extent of the financial exploitation he endured”, the verdict concluded by acknowledging the victim’s testimony.

Man dead after drunk traffic cop runs him over in Karachi

A traffic police officer has allegedly killed a man in the Clifton, Karachi, after running him over while drunk.

Videos of the incident emerged online when a citizen documented the incident while the officer tries to take away his phone but fails to do so. The citizen claims the police officer is drunk. The video also shows what appears to be the blood-soaked body of the victim.

Geo News reports that the victim named Ayub Cedar, son of Mehboob, died after being hit by a speeding car number BF-7810 near the Clifton Underpass within the jurisdiction of Clifton police station.

The traffic police officer, identified as Shahid Hangoro, can also be seen in uniform in the viral video.

The police reached the spot and took the police inspector into custody. He was transferred to the police station, where a case was registered against him.

Station House Officer (SHO) of Clifton police station Irfan Mayo said that the traffic police inspector Shahid Hangoro was posted as a section officer in the Mominabad area of Karachi.

The initial investigation suggests that the traffic police inspector is responsible for the accident. However, he has been medically examined to confirm if he was drunk while driving or not. The police will take further action after receiving the report.

Yesterday, Deputy Inspector General (DIG) Rapid Response Force Azfar Mahesar’s son allegedly hit a woman’s car in a case of drunk driving. Videos of him surrounded by the crowd that gathered on the spot emerged as well.

It was reported that DIG Azfar Mahesar’s son, Asher Azfar Mahesar, was travelling in a vehicle with a police number plate on it along with a cousin and two Rapid Response Force personnel when he hit a woman’s car in the Garden area of the city.

  • Man accused of Rs 3 billion fraud gets bail for Rs100

Man accused of Rs 3 billion fraud gets bail for Rs100

The Islamabad High Court (IHC) has granted bail to Shahid Hussain Khawaja, a suspect in a Rs 3.2 billion sales tax fraud case, on a bond of just Rs 100.

Geo’s Owais Yousafzai reports that during the hearing, Islamabad’s top court declared criminal proceedings of the Tax Department against co-accused Shahid Hussain as an abuse of power.

Justice Babar Sattar ordered that a copy of the court’s decision be sent to the Chairman of the Federal Board of Revenue.

The court’s verdict states that the bank’s branch manager was arrested for assisting in opening an account of a power company in the branch.

However, the state did not present any evidence to prove the petitioner’s involvement in tax fraud.

Additionally, the court argued that the Tax Department did not determine the tax due on the taxpayer, as per the law.

The department also arrested the petitioner in violation of the Lahore High Court (LHC) decision in the case.

It also initiated criminal proceedings despite being aware of the LHC decision.

Justice Sattar emphasised that the tax department exceeded its powers by first initiating criminal proceedings, violating the constitutional rights of dignity and equality of the petitioner. Meanwhile, the authorities and tax officials violated the established law in an attempt to collect more tax.

The IHC pointed out that, “It is a matter of shame that the magistrate who granted the remand and the court that rejected the bail did not take into account the provisions of the Sales Tax Act.”

The court also reprimanded the subordinate court for acknowledging the misleading actions of the tax department instead of protecting fundamental constitutional rights.

In its judgment, the court clarified that the question of the legality of the criminal proceedings is not for it to decide.

However, it hoped that the trial court will take into account the legality of the action.
The petitioner’s bail is granted in lieu of bonds of Rs 100 only. IHC directed Chairman FBR to distribute copies of its decision and those of LHC among tax officers.

The legal powers assigned to public officials should be exercised in accordance with the law, the court warned, as it concluded that “in case of a violation, the FBR and tax officers will face action for the misuse of powers.”

CCTV footage of the incident went viral.

Man who shaved daughter’s head in Karachi granted bail

The man accused of shaving his daughter’s head and keeping her in confinement has been granted bail by a judicial magistrate in Karachi.

Along with the father, four other members of the family have also been released.

The police investigating team presented the victim’s father Niaz Husain, her relatives including uncle Kaleem Husain and three women—Zubaida, Shakeela, and Kinza Fatima—before the judicial magistrate in a Malir court to ask for a physical remand.

The Investigating Officer officially requested the court to remand the suspects to police custody for two weeks.

However, the judicial magistrate rejected the request, granting bail to the suspects, stating that the sections invoked in the FIR are bailable offences.

The court also ordered the suspects to submit surety bonds of Rs20,000 each, along with personal bonds.

The court order stated, “Since the alleged sections are bailable in nature, the accused are offered bail subject to furnishing surety bonds in the sum of Rs. 20,000 each and PR bonds of an equivalent amount.”

Furthermore, the order said that if the suspects fail to provide the required surety bonds, they will be remanded to jail custody.

The father and the relatives were arrested by the police on charges of detaining the victim and shaving her head as punishment for wanting to marry of her own choice.

Naz Fatima, who works as a nurse at the Ojha campus of the Dow University of Health Sciences, was forcefully confined to her father’s home.

Quaidabad SHO Farasat Shah said that after being informed, a police team raided the house, recovered the victim and arrested four suspects, including the patriarch of the house, Naz Fatima’s father.

The police informed the media that after being recovered, the victim later registered a case against her father Niaz Husain, uncle Kaleem Husain and others under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 337-V (Arsh for hair), 337-A-I (punishment of shajjah) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Naz stated in the FIR that her parents separated around seven months ago, after which she, along with her three sisters, began living with their mother in a rented house in Qadhafi Town.  Her father had been pestering her and her sisters to move in with him in Daud Chali, Quaidabad.

However, on December 12, her father beat her and her sisters, prompting them to temporarily seek refuge at her friend’s house in Green Town.

On December 20, Naz’s father, accompanied by her uncle and other relatives, stormed into her friend’s house in the afternoon, beat her, tore her clothes and shaved her head.

Then, they forcibly took her to his house in Quaidabad, where she was held in confinement until she managed to contact her lawyer.

Naz’s lawyer then reported her ordeal to the police, and she was subsequently recovered from wrongful confinement.
