Student gang-raped in Multan’s Nishtar Medical University

A student of Multan’s Nishtar Medical University (NMU) was reportedly kidnapped from the university campus and gang raped by two men.

Media reports suggest that the prime suspect, who kidnapped the student, is an employee of the university, while the second suspect is his friend.

An initial investigation by the police says that the suspects drove the girl to an unknown location, away from the university premises and raped her.

Dawn quotes Multan Regional Police Officer (RPO) Sohail Chaudhry as saying that the police acted promptly upon receiving the information and arrested the two suspects.

Dawn’s Asif Chaudhry reported that a senior NMU doctor said that the girl was in trauma.

The doctor also claimed that senior doctors are putting pressure on the university and hospital management to take up the matter with the police.

However, a medical examination and DNA testing are yet to be carried out.

Multan Cantonment SP Tahir Majeed told media that the police is trying to get a medical examination and DNA test to proceed with the case.

Notably, Nishtar Medical University Multan has been in the spotlight for the last few months because of the violation of medical protocols at the dialysis unit, causing more than 30 patients to contract Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) infections during dialysis treatment at the medical centre on October 26.

The incident surfaced when a patient breathed his last of HIV/AIDs complications and was identified as Shahnawaz (40). He was under treatment at the nephrology department of the hospital, where the doctors contacted the institute’s top management to refer him to the isolation ward for immediate care soon after he tested positive for HIV/AIDs after the completion of a dialysis session.

Following the incident, panic spread among the doctors, nurses and other employees of the nephrology department when news broke out that HIV/AIDS infections were transmitted to 30 other patients.

Investigation revealed that the police identified 30-35 people, including the Nishtar Hospital staff, who were behind the alleged tampering of the record of the kidney patients tested positive for HIV/AIDS.

However, the Pakistan Medical Association (PMA) expressed support for the medics, including the Nishtar Medical University (NMU) Vice Chancellor, who was suspended for negligence that resulted in infections of dozens of kidney patients with HIV in the hospital based on the findings of the probe committee made by the Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz.

The Surjani Town police registered a case on the complaint of the polio worker, after which the man, named Faiq, was arrested from KDA flats.

The female polio worker in the complaint pointed out, “I instantly left the place after the man came out naked in front of me and told the official in charge of my department about the incident.”

However, the police informed the media that no complaint was filed against the man from the woman’s side but the action was taken for public interest.

The man confessed to harassing the woman by exposing himself only as part of a challenge given to him by friends, but someone filmed it and posted it online.

  • Man sentenced to nine years in jail for leaking indecent images of ex-fiancée

Man sentenced to nine years in jail for leaking indecent images of ex-fiancée

A Judicial Magistrate in Karachi has sentenced a man to nine years in jail for leaking indecent images of his former fiancé under the Prevention of Electronic Crime Act (PECA) on Thursday.

The court sentenced Muhammad Shoaib to nine years in prison and imposed a fine of Rs 90,000 on him for taking obscene photos of the woman before posting them on Facebook and Instagram through fake accounts.

If Shoaib fails to pay the fine, he will undergo additional imprisonment.

The case was heard by Judicial Magistrate Yusra Ashfaq, where the man was charged under Sections 20 (dignity of natural person), 21 (modesty of natural person and minor), 24 (cyberstalking) of the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act 2016. He was awarded a three-year imprisonment on each count, making his sentence a total of nine years long.

The court ruled, “The prosecution has demonstrated that the accused tarnished the dignity of the complainant and her family, violated the complainant’s modesty, displayed obscene videos without her consent, and displayed them publicly.”

Additionally, the detailed order also mentioned that the convict has previously been convicted on similar charges back in 2017. “Despite having been convicted in a similar case in 2017, he persisted in his harassment, reportedly utilizing digital platforms to share obscene images and videos of the victim publicly through different modus operandi.”

The court noted that forensic investigation suggests that the convict had leaked the photos and videos with “deliberate intention” to inflict emotional distress over the victim.

Federal Investigation Agency’s Assistant Director-Legal Sheraz Rajpar informs the court that the victim’s father had lodged a complaint against Mohammad Shoaib.

The father informed the FIA Cyber Crime Cell that back in September 2019, his daughter’s inappropriate images and videos were being shared through Instagram and Facebook, which caused distress to his daughter and his family. Notably, his daughter had been engaged to Shoaib, but the relationship ended.

FIA seized the electronic devices that Shoaib used for making different social media accounts and harassing the victim.

While the convict’s lawyer contended in front of the court that his client was falsely implicated in this crime, the court rejected the defence plea and noted that the evidence available before the court directly infers his involvement in the harassment.

The other FIR against Shoaib was also registered by the same ex-fiancée, and he was convicted in August 2020 for using different social media platforms, including Gmail and Facebook, to commit similar offences.

However, that conviction was later challenged in the Sindh High Court (SHC), and it is still pending.

“Therefore, the defence’s argument that imposing a punishment would violate the principle of double jeopardy lacks merit as the prior social mediums were Facebook and Gmail,” the court said in the final verdict.
