  • Kashmiris are finding solace in Turkish drama ‘Diriliş: Ertuğrul’

Turkish historical fiction series Diriliş: Ertuğrul popularly referred to as the Turkish Game of Thrones‘ by fans, has become a sensation in Indian-occupied Kashmir, beating the internet ban in the valley.

According to a report in Print India, “Diriliş: Ertuğrul, which means ‘Resurrection Ertugrul’, is travelling from one household to another in flash drives, circumventing a government effort to stop local cable operators from airing content produced by Muslim countries such as Turkey, Pakistan and Iran.”

Fans not only enjoy the show but say it has helped them “rediscover” Islamic history.

Though the show was popular in the area before the lockdown, its popularity appears to have skyrocketed following the blackout, including in previously uncharted areas of the Valley. Watching the show together has become a family activity for most families living there.

According to Kashmiris, with no internet, restrictions on civil movement and the shutdown between August and October, contributed to its popularity, to the extent that “analysing” the series is becoming an activity of sorts at coaching centers, street corners and even at mosques.

As for how they gained access to the show, many people had already downloaded the series before the internet ban, while some got it on trips outside the Valley. The series was then shared between different households.

Set in 13th century Anatolia, Diriliş: Ertuğrul follows the time before the establishment of the Ottoman Empire and illustrates the struggle of Ertugrul Gazi, the father of Osman I – the founder of the Ottoman dynasty.

It has five seasons, all of which have more than 25 episodes, each around two hours long.

Previously, Prime Minister Imran Khan had requested PTV to air the show and had recommended all Pakistanis to watch it because it “promotes the true Islamic values.”

Following the PM’s request, PTV acquired the rights to the drama and will soon be airing it after it is dubbed in Urdu.

Naimal Khawar, Adnan Sami, ‘Ehd-e-Wafa’ among 2019’s top Google searches in Pakistan

Google Trends has released the list of what was trending in year 2019 in Pakistan in the categories of Searches, People and Movies & TV.

Pakistan vs South Africa tops the Searches list while Naimal Khawar was the top searched person in the country in 2019. Number one on the Movies & TV list is Avengers: Endgame followed by Bigg Boss 13 and the ISPR helmed drama Ehd e Wafa.

See the rest of the list here:

    Searches

Comes as no surprise that all the top searches this year were related to cricket. 2019 also saw Pakistan participate in the ICC Cricket World Cup and Pakistan narrowly missed making it to the semi-finals this year. However, the uncanny differences between the 1992 cricket world cup and the 2019 one had everyone on the edge of their seats.

    People

Naimal Khawar was the most searched person in Pakistan mainly because her debut drama Anaa was a huge success and because this year she also became Mrs Hamza Ali Abbasi. Hamza and Naimal’s wedding was one which fans had not seen coming at all which is probably why they were more intruiged by it.

Number two on the list was the ‘Chocolate Hero’ Waheed Murad. The late actor became the second most searched person in the country after he was honoured with a Google Doodle on his 81st birthday.

    Waheed Murad

Babar Azam followed on number 3, who left everyone in awe with his brilliant cricket skills, especially during the ICC World Cup 2019 when he smashed several records. He remained the world’s top-ranked T20I batsman.

    Babar Azam

Number four on the list is Asif Ali which is interesting because he did not really impress anyone with his cricketing skills.

    Asif Ali

Adnan Sami, better known as ‘undercover agent’ Major Adnan Sami, was the fifth most searched person in Pakistan. Sami, who is now an Indian national, is often trending on social media when tensions between India and Pakistan are high.

Others on the list included Sara Ali Khan (6), Mohammad Amir (7), Alizeh Shah (8), Abhinandan Varthaman (9) and Madiha Naqvi (10).

Bollywood actor Sara has garnered quite a loyal following in Pakistan, while Alizeh Shah is the country’s latest national crush, particularly after her roles in Superstar and Ehd e Wafa. Madiha Naqvi made it to the list after she tied the knot with Muhttahid Quami Movement’s (MQM) Faisal Sabzwari in a low-key wedding ceremony this summer.

  • Subscribers begin to quit Netflix over ‘Messiah’ controversy

Subscribers have started quitting Netflix as the controversy surrounding an upcoming show, ‘Messiah’, intensifies ever since the streaming service provider launched its first trailer last week.

Messiah is the story of a case assigned to a Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) operative, Eve Geller, played by Michelle Monaghan. A Syrian man has grabbed eyeballs and headlines around the world by claiming that he is the promised Messiah. Geller has been tasked by the agency to crack the case and figure out whether the man is a con artist hell-bent on disturbing the status quo or if he really is what he claims to be.

Mehdi Dehbi from ‘London Has Fallen’ plays the character of the Messiah. He has plenty of miracles up his sleeves which win him a legion of followers across the globe. However, many Netflix users across the world have voiced their unhappiness over the plot of the show.

While some are afraid and think it is indicative of the times to come, others claim that the show is outright disrespectful towards their religious beliefs.

Islam, Christianity and other religions across the world have predicted the arrival of the antichrist, something the show seems to have caught on and based its plot around.

Earlier, people had been threatening to boycott the streaming service provider.

Mehwish Hayat is thinking of becoming an artist by ‘taping karela’ to wall

The banana duct-taped to a wall has been an internet sensation from the last few days and honestly, we all have wondered how this piece of artwork can be worth $120,000 equivelant to approximately Rs18618312.

Mehwish Hayat voiced our collective concern on social media.

Mehwish wrote that she was thinking of becoming an artist and taping a karela to the wall.

“If the Banana was sold for $120K wonder how much that would make…,” she wrote.

The work of Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan was sold for $120,000 last week at Miami’s Art Basel.

What’s interesting is that the banana was, in fact, a work of art by Italian artist Maurizio Cattelan titled “Comedian” and sold to a French collector for $120,000.

In a video posted on his Instagram account, David Datuna, who describes himself as a Georgian-born American artist living in New York, walks up to the banana and pulls it off the wall with the duct tape attached.

“Art performance … hungry artist,” he said, as he peeled the fruit and took a bite. “Thank you, very good.”

  • Priyanka Chopra opens up on the ‘Girl, don’t yell’ controversy

Priyanka Chopra opens up on the ‘Girl, don’t yell’ controversy

Priyanka Chopra in a new interview has addressed the controversy that erupted after Pakistani woman Ayesha Malik had accused her of promoting war during an event in Los Angeles in August.

Speaking to the Daily Beast, Priyanka when asked about this said, “A couple of things. I feel like this is not an opportune moment to talk about it. Second of all, it was unfortunate what happened, and third of all, I never have, never was, and never will be pro-war and that is in my statements itself. My work for all of these years is a testament to that, and I don’t feel I need to keep regurgitating it.”

In July, as Chopra was taking questions at BeautyCon, Ayesha had called the Bollywood star a hypocrite for “encouraging nuclear war against Pakistan.”

“So it was kind of hard hearing you talk about humanity because as your neighbour, a Pakistani, I know you’re a bit of a hypocrite,” Malik can be heard saying in the video posted on Twitter. “You tweeted on February 26, ‘Jai Hind #IndianArmedForces.’”

Malik continued, “You are a UNICEF ambassador for peace and you’re encouraging nuclear war against Pakistan. There’s no winner in this. As a Pakistani, millions of people like me have supported you in your business of Bollywood and you wanted nuclear war.”

However, the microphone was taken away from Malik before she could make any further comments.

Priyanka had started off her response by saying “Whenever you’re done venting… got it, done? Okay, cool.”

“So, I have many, many friends from Pakistan and I am from India, and war is not something that I am really fond of but I am patriotic. So, I’m sorry if I hurt sentiments to people who do love me and have loved me, but I think that all of us have a sort of middle ground that we all have to walk, just like you probably do as well,” she continued.

“The way you came at me right now?” Chopra had remarked. “Girl, don’t yell. We’re all here for love. Don’t yell. Don’t embarrass yourself. But we all walk that middle ground, but thank you for your enthusiasm and your question and your voice.”

Priyanka’s response and comments had not impressed anyone and people were mostly infuriated with her condescending tone and attitude.
