Female wrestlers in India are protesting on roads, but why?

Top female wrestlers in India are protesting against Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, an influential politician who has been accused of sexually harassing and intimidating female athletes, calling for him to be held responsible.

Singh has been accused of harassing seven female wrestlers and one minor.

Who is Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh?

Singh, who has been heading the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) since 2011, is a six-time member of parliament from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

    No action against harassment:

Following accusations of sexual harassments, a panel was formed by the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) in January to investigate the matter. The Sports Minister of India, Anurag Singh Thakur, had stated that the investigation would be concluded within four weeks. Although the inquiry report was prepared in April, the conclusions were not disclosed to the public.

Despite mounting pressure for his resignation as President of the WFI, Singh has chosen to disregard these demands He has refuted the accusations, stating that they are part of a scheme to tarnish his image.

The wrestlers in India have claimed that the government has not acted quickly enough in response to allegations of sexual harassment, despite the sport ministry’s January announcement that it would investigate the matter. This complaint comes three months after the ministry’s statement.

Singh was booked by the Delhi Police on April 28, but has escaped further action thus far.

Background of female wrestlers in India:

Wrestling in India is plagued by sexual harassment, with many wrestlers hailing from humble backgrounds in the northern state of Haryana, which can make them vulnerable to intimidation by powerful officials.

This problem is not limited to wrestling, as other sports in India have also seen incidents of sexual harassment, including the national cycling team and the women’s under-17 football team. The Sports Authority of India received 30 complaints of sexual harassment in the past five years, according to the sports minister’s response to a parliamentary query.

  • Wes Anderson in DI Khan? Believe it (or not)

It’s true that there are a lot of reasons to be miserable in Pakistan right now: inflation, political instability, religious conflicts, the list keeps going.

But it’s heartwarming to witness how talented Pakistani people are that they keep blowing us away with their creativity and sense of humor, such as a new trend that is re-imagining what Wes Anderson films would look like if instead of the West, they were shot in Pakistan.

A social media user reimagined how Anderson’s film would look like in a village in Dera Ismail Khan.

    The result: mindblowing.

Another video that kick started the trend was when a man decided to re-imagine how the iconic Hollywood director’s film would be shot if he landed in Chitral-and seriously we would love to pitch these ideas ourselves to Anderson.

Twitter users are blown away by the creativity and honestly we agree with all of them. Let’s start calling directors like Martin Scorsese and Quentin Tarantino to Pakistan!

  • Foodpanda users beware: Woman claims Rs11,000 deducted from bank account

Foodpanda users beware: Woman claims Rs11,000 deducted from bank account

Online scams are a recurring issue that we hear about time and again. Unfortunately, it is not uncommon to hear of fraudsters using apps to debit money from unsuspecting victims. The latest incident involves the popular food delivery app, Foodpanda, which has been accused of scamming its users.

A Twitter user with the handle ‘nahin ho paa raha ab’ recently shared a disturbing incident involving her friend and the Foodpanda app. Her friend received three notifications of Rs11,000 being deducted from her bank account by Foodpanda, all within the span of five minutes. To add insult to injury, the app appeared to evade responsibility for the issue.

The user claimed that her friend had three linked accounts, with two of them having insufficient funds. When both failed, Foodpanda allegedly debited the third account without her friend’s knowledge or consent. Upon attempting to remove her bank details, her friend was reportedly logged out and her login credentials were changed.

The Twitter user accused the app of a data breach, and shockingly, Foodpanda has reportedly asked her to file a police report. It’s a worrying incident that highlights the need for greater vigilance and caution when using online services.

She also shared screenshots of the transaction. Here is the viral Twitter thread:

Screenshots shared by the Twitter user indicate that the food delivery app has pledged to assist the relevant authorities in investigating the matter at hand.

The user who previously reported the fraudulent activity, known as ‘nahin ho paa raha ab’, has since spoken with The Current and shared that Meezan Bank has promised assistance due to the lack of two-factor authentication.

Despite this, Foodpanda’s help center has not confirmed whether the user will receive a refund and has requested additional information regarding the incident. The user has already provided a detailed explanation and shared their experience on social media.

According to her, this is not the first time such a scam has occurred. She mentioned that another girl was also deprived of Rs20,000 in a similar manner in the past.

Despite our best efforts, we were unable to receive a response from Foodpanda regarding this matter at the time of publishing this news story.

Loneliness as dangerous to health as smoking 15 cigarettes a day: US Surgeon General

The Surgeon General of the United States of America (USA), Vivek Murthy, has said that loneliness poses a health risk equivalent to smoking 15 cigarettes a day. He made the comments while talking to the BBC regarding the prevalence of loneliness in the US.

Murthy – one of the highest ranking health officials in the country-said that the problem affects nearly half of all Americans and he has also experienced it himself.

He urged US health authorities to treat loneliness as seriously as they treat obesity or drug abuse.

“I had neglected my family and my friends during that time, thinking that it was too hard to focus on work, and focus on family and friends,” said Murthy while talking about his own experience.

“I was really suffering from the consequences of that, which were a profound sense of loneliness that followed me for weeks, which stretched into months,” he added.
Experiencing loneliness has been linked to a significant increase in the chances of premature death, by up to almost 30 per cent. This increased risk is associated with various health problems such as diabetes, hearts attacks, insomnia, and dementia.

  • Sindh Education Ministry denies Fatima Bhutto’s allegations of Sajawal ghost school with photos

The Ministry of Education & Literacy Department of Sindh has responded to a tweet by Fatima Bhutto that criticised the provincial government for corruption.

In her tweet, Bhutto had posted a picture of an old and derelict building, referring to it as a ghost school located in Sajawal. She alleged that the ghost school was empty due to the corruption of the Sindh government.

The Sindh government responded by stating that a new building for the said school has been built 300 meters away from the abandoned building.

“It is again shared for your record that this is an abandoned structure built around 5 decades back, the new building has been built, some 300 meters near with three rooms and a lavatory block which is functioning smoothly. The pics are given for ready reference,” read the tweet by the Sindh Government. In the attached picture, a school building can be seen while in another photo, two toilets inside the school are visible.

“In Feb, I posted about the Sajawal govt ghost school that was empty and growing weeds out of its windows thanks to the rampant corruption of the Sindh government -if it can even be called that, since they don’t do even the barest minimum,” alleged Fatima in her tweet.

“An update: it’s still empty and still a ghost school two months later even though an official came to visit after @BhuttoZulfikar and I wrote about it. Nothing has been done. What teachers are registered as working here? They’re taking government salaries. We should know their names,”she added.
