T20 World Cup: ICC rejects Bangladesh’s demand to move matches out of India, says will uphold schedule

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Wednesday rejected Bangladesh’s demand to relocate its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, maintaining that the tournament schedule will proceed as planned.

As per details, the ICC Board made this decision during a meeting after the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) asked to move its fixtures out of India over security concerns.

The cricket watchdog said the decision was based on comprehensive security assessments, including independent reviews, which found no threat to Bangladesh players, officials, media personnel or fans at any tournament venue in India.

It also said that changing the schedule so close to the tournament was not feasible.

Officials noted that altering fixtures without any credible security threat could set a dangerous precedent that would threaten the integrity of future ICC events and compromise the organisation’s neutrality as a global governing body. It also reaffirmed its commitment to acting in good faith, upholding consistent standards and safeguarding the collective interests of the global game.

It may be noted that the security concerns surfaced after the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) over Hindu extremists’ threats to attack Bangladeshi players.

It was followed by Bangladesh announcing that they would not play their matches in India, questioning that if India could not provide security to one player, how could it assure the safety of the entire team.

ICC management held several meetings and exchanged correspondence with the BCB to resolve the issue, sharing detailed information about the event security plan, including layered federal and state law enforcement support.

An ICC spokesperson explained that the organisation engaged with the BCB in sustained dialogue over several weeks, sharing independent security assessments, comprehensive venue-level security plans and formal assurances from host authorities.

The spokesperson noted that the BCB maintained its position by linking its participation to “a single, isolated and unrelated development concerning one of its player’s involvement in a domestic league”, emphasising that it had no bearing on the tournament’s security framework or participation conditions.

  • ‘I am going to have to drop Babar Azam’: Mark Waugh says Sydney Sixers need stronger batting options

‘I am going to have to drop Babar Azam’: Mark Waugh says Sydney Sixers need stronger batting options

Australian great Mark Waugh has called for a major change in the Sydney Sixers batting line up, saying the team relies too heavily on Steve Smith.

As per the details, Waugh made the comments during Big Bash League (BBL) broadcast before the rain-delayed match between Melbourne Stars and Hobart Hurricanes, whose winner will face the Sixers for a spot in the final.

“I think a bit of tough love. I think they need to rejiggle their batting because at the moment it is almost totally relying on Steve Smith,” Waugh said.

“Sam Curran got them out of jail in another game. He is gone. So, at the moment there are not a lot of players in form,” he said and suggested bringing in Australia’s Moises Henriques or Jordan Silk while making a difficult decision regarding Pakistani batter Babar Azam.

Waugh further said, “Unfortunately, I am going to have to drop Babar Azam. I do not think he has done enough at the top of the order. I know he is world class, but you are thinking about winning this tournament. And so far, he just has not done it.”

“So, I am thinking about a new opener. You can either have Moises Henriques open or bring in Daniel Hughes or Jordan Silk. One of those two heads. That is the way I am thinking.”

The comments come after lackluster performance by a majority of Pakistani cricketers during BBL 15.

Babar joined Sydney Sixers for the ongoing season and has scored 202 runs in 11 matches, including two fifties, with a strike rate of 103.06 and an average of 22.44.

  • Vikrant Gupta says Mohsin Naqvi is PCB’s first ‘takkar ka banda’ against India

Vikrant Gupta says Mohsin Naqvi is PCB’s first ‘takkar ka banda’ against India

Indian sports journalist Vikrant Gupta has delivered unexpected praise for Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi during a recent discussion on an Indian sports channel.

Speaking about the T20 World Cup controversy involving Bangladesh’s refusal to play in India, Gupta had striking comments about Naqvi’s approach to cricket administration.

“Pakistan is currently saying, ‘I am the gangster of this street, I will decide, and I will bring down Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) with two votes from Bangladesh and Pakistan.’ For the first time, someone from PCB has come, I have to give it to him, who is saying, ‘We will look you in the eye and fight,’ and that person is not backing down,” Gupta said during the discussion.

The journalist revealed that Naqvi has ordered the Pakistan cricket team to halt preparations for the T20 World Cup entirely amid the unresolved Bangladesh situation.

Gupta then contrasted this with BCCI’s approach, pointing to recent controversies. “On the other hand, these people wear ties and go to watch matches. They are very fond of watching matches. BCCI, what are they doing? Players are told not to shake hands,” he questioned, referencing the Asia Cup 2025 incident when India refused to shake hands with Pakistani players and closed their dressing room doors after winning to avoid greetings from their rivals.

The controversy began when BCCI removed Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) after Hindutva extremists threatened to attack Bangladeshi players.

The activists also labeled Kolkata Knight Riders owner Shah Rukh Khan a traitor for signing the left-arm bowler.

Bangladesh responded by banning IPL broadcasts in the country. The Bangladesh Cricket Board has asked the International Cricket Council (ICC) to shift its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka, citing security concerns.

The ICC previously accepted security concerns as valid grounds when India refused to tour Pakistan for the Champions Trophy, and Bangladesh argues similar reasoning should apply now.

Bangladesh has three matches scheduled in Kolkata and one in Mumbai for the upcoming tournament.

However, no decision has been made yet on Bangladesh’s participation.

Pakistan has reportedly thrown its full support behind Bangladesh’s decision to skip T20 World Cup matches in India, offering to take up the matter with the ICC if needed.

According to reports, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has ordered a complete halt to Pakistan’s preparations for the tournament.

Reports citing sources claimed that the PCB chief has told team management to wait for further instructions and prepare a contingency plan in case the country does not participate in the World Cup.

Pakistan has also expressed interest in hosting Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches after the team refused to travel to India for the tournament, according to reports.

Individual game championships will carry prize pools exceeding $39 million combined. The remaining funds will go toward club and player awards, including MVP honors for each tournament and the Jafonso Award for competitors who win championships after advancing through Last Chance Qualifiers.

The 2026 lineup features 24 competitive titles, with new additions Fortnite and Trackmania joining returning favorites like League of Legends, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2, VALORANT, Call of Duty: Black Ops 7, EA Sports FC 26, PUBG, PUBG Mobile and Street Fighter 6.

Early bird options include weekly access passes, premium tournament passes and hospitality packages.

  • Mike Hesson opposes Haris Rauf’s selection in T20 World Cup squad after Asia Cup final: reports

Mike Hesson opposes Haris Rauf’s selection in T20 World Cup squad after Asia Cup final: reports

Fast bowler Haris Rauf is likely to miss Pakistan’s 15-member squad for the International Cricket Council (ICC) T20 World Cup, reports confirmed Monday, despite taking 18 wickets in nine Big Bash League (BBL) matches this season.

Team coach Mike Hesson reportedly opposes Rauf’s inclusion following the Asia Cup final, where the pacer’s death-over struggles proved costly.

The most damaging blow came in the 2025 Asia Cup final against India. With India needing 10 runs in the final over, Rauf conceded the runs in just four balls, finishing with figures of 50 runs in four overs without a wicket.

A pattern of high-pressure failures appears to have sealed his fate. During the 2024 T20 World Cup, Rauf could not defend 15 runs in the final over against the United States, forcing a Super Over that Pakistan ultimately lost in one of the tournament’s biggest upsets.

In the 2022 T20 World Cup against India, Rauf bowled the 19th over with Pakistan defending 28 runs off eight balls. Virat Kohli hit two consecutive sixes off the final two deliveries, turning the match in India’s favor.

Most recently, Rauf failed to defend 10 runs in the final over against Brisbane Heat in the ongoing BBL.

Pakistan hopes to begin their T20 World Cup campaign against the Netherlands on February 7 in Colombo.

  • PCB chairman orders halting all T20 World Cup preparations amid India-Bangladesh tensions

PCB chairman orders halting all T20 World Cup preparations amid India-Bangladesh tensions

Amid tensions between Bangladesh and India, and uncertainty over the former’s participation in the upcoming T20 World Cup due to security concerns, Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has ordered to completely halt Green Shirt’s preparations for the tournament.

Reports citing sources claimed that the PCB chief has told team management to wait for further instructions and prepare a contingency plan in case the country does not participate in the World Cup.

The claims come after Pakistan reportedly threw its full support behind Bangladesh’s decision to skip T20 World Cup matches in India, offering to raise the matter with the International Cricket Council (ICC) if needed.

According to reports, the PCB will stand by Bangladesh’s stance on player safety, calling the security concerns reasonable and valid.

Meanwhile, Pakistan has also expressed interest in hosting Bangladesh’s T20 World Cup matches after the team refused to travel to India, highlighting its successful hosting of the Champions Trophy and the ICC Women’s Qualifier as evidence of its ability to host World Cup matches.

It may be noted that tensions between Bangladesh and India started to rise when the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) removed Bangladeshi pacer Mustafizur Rahman from the Indian Premier League (IPL) over Hindutva extremists’ threats rooted in violence against Hindus in and around Dhaka.

In response, Bangladesh banned IPL broadcast in the country, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) requested the ICC to shift its T20 World Cup matches from India to Sri Lanka.

Reports added that the ICC had previously accepted security concerns as valid grounds when India refused to tour Pakistan for last year’s Champions Trophy, and similar reasoning should apply now.

Pakistan, out of similar concerns, will also play all their matches in Sri Lanka, which is co-hosting the tournament.

For now, Bangladesh are due to play three matches in Kolkata and one in Mumbai as the ICC is yet to make a final decision on the matter.

The opening match of the tournament is less than two weeks away on Feb 7.

‘Have you and Babar made up?’: Steve Smith on run-taking controversy

Steve Smith has addressed the controversy surrounding his on-field disagreement with teammate Babar Azam during a Big Bash League (BBL) match.

Commentator Isha Guha asked Smith about the incident on Sunday during a pre-match discussion before Sydney Sixers’ latest game. “Have things been sorted out between you and Babar Azam?” she questioned.

Smith responded with a laugh, saying, “We’ve spoken to each other. Babar batted well that night. We talked about golf, as you would have seen on screen.” He then shifted focus to the upcoming match, adding, “The pitch looks good, hoping to do well in this match too.”

The controversy erupted during the match against Sydney Thunder on the previous Friday, when Smith refused a single to Babar Azam as the two opened for Sydney Sixers.

Babar failed to score on three consecutive balls in the 11th over, before driving to long-on off the last ball of the over. Smith then smashed the Sydney Thunder bowler for four consecutive sixes in the next over, while Babar got bowled out on the first ball after returning to strike.

When Babar got out, he hit the boundary rope with his bat in frustration.

According to reports, Smith told Babar in the 10th over that he would face the first ball of the power surge over. Smith went on to score 32 runs in that over, but Babar reportedly showed no signs of celebration.

Australian media reports claim Babar felt disrespected by Smith’s behavior during the match and grew visibly angry. After the game ended, the Pakistani star stayed in the Sydney Sixers changing room and refused to meet anyone.

Babar joined the Sydney Sixers for the ongoing season. The former Pakistani captain has accumulated 202 runs in 10 matches with two fifties, maintaining a strike rate of 104.12 and an average of 25.25.

  • PSL moves from draft to auction model: here’s how it works

PSL moves from draft to auction model: here’s how it works

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has announced a major overhaul of the Pakistan Super League’s (PSL) player acquisition system, replacing the decade-old draft mechanism with an auction model for the tournament’s 11th edition.

The change represents the most significant structural reform since the league’s inception in 2016.

Accoring to PCB, the auction system aims to create more balanced teams while offering players bigger earning opportunities through competitive bidding.

Under the new framework, franchises can retain a maximum of four players ahead of the auction, with restrictions limiting them to one player per category. This is a sharp reduction from the previous system, which allowed teams to retain eight players plus additional three options through mentors, brand ambassadors, and right-to-match provisions.

The board has eliminated all three of these options for HBL PSL 11, streamlining the retention process and opening up more players to the auction pool.

Two new franchises joining the league will receive special advantages to select and retain four players from the available pool before the auction begins.

Additionally, each team can sign one international player directly, provided that player did not participate in the 2025 edition.

The PCB has increased the salary purse to $1.6 million per franchise, reflecting the league’s growth and commitment to attracting top talent from Pakistan and abroad.

HBL PSL 11 will begin on March 26 and run through May 3, 2026. The tournament will expand its city reach by adding Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium as a venue for the first time, marking the city’s return to hosting top-tier cricket.

The board will announce further details about the auction process, schedule, and operational guidelines in the coming weeks.

  • 232-year-old cricket record broken as PTV defends lowest target in first-class history

232-year-old cricket record broken as PTV defends lowest target in first-class history

A rare and unwanted world record emerged in the President’s Trophy First Class Cricket tournament where Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Limited cricket team (SNGPL) failed to chase a meager target of 40 runs.

As per the details, in the match between Pakistan Television (PTV) and SNGPL, the state broadcaster created history by successfully defending the lowest score in first-class cricket history.

SNGPL needed just 40 runs to win the match but the entire team collapsed for only 37 runs. This made it the first team in first-class cricket history when such a low target was defended.

PTV also broke a 232-year-old record from 1794 when the Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) failed to chase a target of 41 runs against Old Field, ESPN reported.
