Punjab College protests: Over 150 arrested as students take to roads in Rawalpindi

Police have arrested at least 150 violent protesters in Rawalpindi who were demonstrating against the alleged rape of an unnamed female student in Punjab Group of Colleges in Lahore.

The police used tear gas to disperse the demonstrators.

A social media post went viral alleging that a rape took place in a campus of Punjab Group of Colleges. However, as yet, no student or family has come forward to file a complaint. Enraged students staged protests outside different colleges in Lahore, leaving 28 people injured.

Rawalpindi Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operation Hafiz Kamran Asghar today told Dawn that at least 150 violent protesters had been arrested so far, and police have controlled the law and order situation in Rawalpindi.

The Senior Superintendent of Police said that whoever attempts to take the law into their own hand under the pretence of protest would face legal consequences.

“All the closed roads have also been opened,” SSP Asghar added.

Rawalpindi police on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, “Rawalpindi Police is fully prepared to deal with any law and order situation.”

Earlier, a college security guard lost his life in violent clashes with students in Gujrat district. Police have booked 185 people in a murder case.

Television host Nida Yasir has explained why her daughter stays away from social media.

Recently, she spoke about the rules her 15-year-old daughter must follow while taking part in a panel discussion on her show, ‘Good Morning Pakistan.’

Family members of lawmakers ‘disappearing’ as Constitutional Amendments approach

Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) member Meher Bano Qureshi, the daughter of former Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, posted on X (formerly Twitter) late at night on October 16 that her sister-in-law, the wife of PTI MNA Zain Qureshi, was abducted from near their home by “masked men in plain clothes and multiple cars.”

A few hours later, Qureshi posted a photo with the caption: “Alhamdulillah, she’s home. Thank you for your prayers and support!”

“They have not been able to break us for the last year and half despite all kinds of threats and are now resorting to such low level tactics. Mine & my family’s faith in Allah is unbreakable. He will see us & Pakistan through this fascism,” she wrote.

However, Meher Bano Qureshi is not the only one to complain about the sudden ‘disappearance’ and ‘abduction’ of lawmakers and their family members.

This disturbing trend was first revealed by Chairman Balochistan National Party (BNP) Akhtar Mengal, who recently handed over his resignation as an MNA, citing unheard grievances of Balochistan when he took to X (formerly Twitter) to write that his lodges in Islamabad had been raided.

Mengal also wrote: “My party Senator Naseema Ehsan is confined to her apartment, and her son has been abducted. Meanwhile, my party’s other Senator Qasim Roonjo, who went for his dialysis at 8 a.m. in Islamabad, has been untraceable along with his son since then. Is this what democracy looks like?!!!”

Interestingly, Akhtar Mengal posted about the alleged abduction of his party senators around the same time PTI’s Meher Bano Qureshi tweeted about the short ‘disappearance’ of her sister-in-law.

In a separate post, the PTI member also revealed on X: “She was taken literally yards away from interior minister’s @MohsinnaqviC42 house who happens to be our neighbour.”

Meanwhile, Akhtar Mengal strongly condemned the alleged harassment of his party senators, saying, “After Benazir Bhutto’s and Nawaz Sharif’s Charter of Democracy we now have the Zardari-Sharif Crater of Democracy. Indeed democracy is the best revenge and ofcourse vote ko bahut izzat do.”

Mengal also showed solidarity with PTI’s Meher Bano Qureshi, writing, “All boundaries have been breached to ensure the votes get pushed through. It’s a déjà vu of Musharaf’s dictatorship. Shameful act.”

The BNP leader warned last week that “undemocratic methods” were being employed to enforce the upcoming constitutional amendments.

Meanwhile, netizens also dived into what could be the reason behind the disturbing trend. Journalist Maria Memon quoted Qureshi’s post with a caption: “The so-called “political consensus” is being achieved at a very heavy cost.”

Columnist Arifa Noor posted: “Nearly every other day, there are incidents that leave one speechless.”

Another X user posted, “Picking up someone’s wife who is not even involved in politics is lowest of low. These actions are eroding any remaining trust or confidence in the state. Let sense prevail; don’t compromise your entire humanity over short-term political benefit.”

PTI has been campaigning and protesting against the government’s proposed 26th constitutional amendment, which aims to reform the judiciary, amongst other things.

The coalition government remained unsuccessful last month when it tried to pass the constitutional package, but since then it has been aggressively championed, in a campaign led by PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto, to get the required votes.

‘Well-planned strategy disconnecting Imran Khan from PTI leadership’

Political analyst Muneeb Farooq has claimed that the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s disconnect with his party leadership is part of a well-planned strategy.

Appearing on the Geo News programme ‘Aaj Shahzeb Khanzada Kay Saath,’ Muneeb Farooq said, “There is a well-thought strategy behind disconnecting PTI leadership with Imran Khan.”

“It is done by design and strategy, and it has worked for the government and establishment,” he added.

Citing the possibility of a permanent disconnection between Imran and party leadership, Muneeb Farooq remarked, “Powerful and well-connected people believe that Imran Khan’s genuine jail [sentence] has just begun.”

Responding to the incumbent government’s effort and attention in tabling the twenty-sixth constitutional amendment, Farooq declared it to be akin to World War Three: “The first draft of the constitutional amendment was like an atom bomb.”

He maintained that constitutional amendments would be passed in phases and added that the new Federal Constitutional Court (FCC) and judge appointment method will be considered of paramount importance in phase one.

One Direction star Liam Payne dies in shocking accident

Liam Payne, former member of the popular band One Direction has died at the age of 31 in Buenos Aires, Argentina on October 16, 2024.

According to police reports, emergency services were called to an upscale hotel in the Palermo neighborhood after receiving a 911 call about an aggressive individual. Upon arrival, they heard a loud sound from an interior courtyard, where they discovered Payne’s body. Authorities launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death, with an autopsy scheduled to determine the cause.
Emergency medical services director Alberto Crescent shared that Payne suffered ‘serious injuries’ but did not provide details about the fall from the hotel balcony. Meanwhile the UK Foreign offices is in in contact with Argentinian authorities, but no further information has been disclosed.

Argentina media outlets reported that an emergency call from a hotel manager reported a guest on drugs, destroying his room on the property.
The hotel manager told the operator the room has a balcony, expressing fear that they might put their life at risk.

The Buenos Aires security ministry said in a statement that when officers arrived, the hotel manager reported ‘the death of a man who had jumped from the balcony of his room.’

What Sajid Khan told Joe Root before bowling him out?

Pakistani left-arm spinner Sajid Khan has said that as English batting maestro Joe Root came to bat, he told the Britisher something personal.

“I said to him, ‘Youre my dream wicket,’” the spinner told the media at the Multan Cricket Stadium on Wednesday. ,”As soon as Joe Root came to bat, I told him I’ve played against your brother in England, but you are my dream wicket, so he started laughing. The English cricket team has bowled out for 291 runs in the first innings of the 2nd Test match in Multan Cricket Stadium.

Taxed for holding back: Banks face 197 billion rupee bill for avoiding private sector loans

Bankers across Pakistan grow uneasy as their pleas to get tax exemptions fall on deaf ears.

The government, as per the conditions attached to the IMF loan, can not exempt banks from the “additional” tax of PKR 197 billion.

The reason why banks find themselves in this situation is because of their excessive lending to the government. As per lending regulations, banks are not supposed to withhold loans from the private sector while extending credit to the government.

To discourage this practice, the government introduced a tax rule in 2022 to encourage banks to increase the number of loans to the private sector. Three major banks alone face a staggering PKR 71 billion tax bill alongside other banks that did not comply with this rule.

While lawmakers in Islamabad have expressed interest to relieve banks of these additional taxes, IMF rules have their hands tied. Earlier in the year, tax exemptions were in the works. However, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif scrapped the idea.

Following the glaring silence and lack of action regarding the exemption of additional taxes, banks might now scramble to give out billions in loans to the private sector to avoid the tax.

This spells great news for businesses who are seeking loans as the current situation will likely ease borrowing. With the two per cent State bank slash in interest rates last month and the possibility of future decreases, it seems like high time for businesses to start expanding using debt.

The primary beneficiaries of the potential loans will most likely be small businesses. The reason behind this is their lack of assets to pledge as collateral to secure funding alongside the lack of good will that currently exists as a result of a non-existent credit history.

Ultimately, though, through paying taxes or extending loans, the banks will have to contribute. Either way, the economy is likely to benefit – whether by reducing the federal budget deficit or by fueling business activity.

The choice may not favour the banks, but the country is likely to benefit regardless.
