Qatar officially in the race to host 2036 Olympics

Qatar has officially submitted its bid to host the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games, marking a significant step in the Gulf state’s ongoing push to establish itself as a global sports hub.

The energy-rich nation previously hosted the FIFA World Cup in 2022 and, according to media reports, aims to diversify its economy by hosting major international sporting events.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman Al Thani said, “If awarded, Qatar would become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa region to host the Olympic Games.” In a statement released by the Qatar News Agency, he added, “The bid for the 2036 Olympic and Paralympic Games marks a new milestone in our nation’s journey.”

He emphasised, “This bid builds on Qatar’s strong track record of successfully hosting major international sporting events, including the FIFA World Cup 2022.”

During the football World Cup, Qatar faced international criticism, particularly from human rights groups like Amnesty International, over the treatment of migrant workers. Reports claimed that thousands died during World Cup projects. However, Qatari authorities denied these allegations, stating that only 37 workers died, with just three deaths linked to work-related incidents.

President of the Qatar Olympic Committee, Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani, stated, “Doha has made sport a central pillar of its national strategy.” He added, “Ninety-five percent of the infrastructure needed to host the Games is already complete, and we have a comprehensive plan to finish the rest.”

Notably, countries are no longer required to publicly disclose their bids for hosting the Olympics. The Olympic Games are traditionally rotated across continents. With Paris, Los Angeles, and Brisbane set to host the 2024, 2028, and 2032 editions respectively in Europe, North America, and Oceania, the chances of the 2036 Games taking place in Asia or Africa are considered higher.

The final decision will be a major responsibility for the newly appointed President of the International Olympic Committee, Kirsty Coventry, the first woman to hold the role. Selecting the host for 2036 will be a key part of her legacy and could mark a new chapter in Olympic history.

Gold Prices in Pakistan: What’s Happening and Why It Matters

Gold has always held a special place in Pakistan’s economy and culture. Whether for weddings, investment, or savings, gold remains a trusted asset for many. Recently, gold prices have seen noticeable shifts, both locally and globally.

In this blog, we’ll explore the latest gold price movements in Pakistan, what affects them, and how international factors play a role. We’ll also share the current rates, trends, and what to expect in the near future.

Recent Gold Price Movements in Pakistan

Gold prices in Pakistan have changed rapidly over the last few days. On Monday, the price for one tola of gold jumped to Rs361,200, an increase of Rs3,600 from the previous rate. This rise mirrored the global market trend.

On the same day, the price for 10 grams of gold also rose by Rs3,087, reaching Rs309,671.

Before that, on Friday, gold had closed at Rs357,600 per tola. This represented a Rs2,500 increase. However, the market remained closed on Saturday due to a traders’ strike against certain tax policies.

By Tuesday, prices took a slight dip. The price per tola dropped to Rs360,676.80, while 1 gram sold at Rs30,922.74, slightly down from Rs30,999.84 the day before.

These values are based on market data provided by FXStreet and UrduPoint, which convert international gold prices into local currency.

    Global Gold Prices and Influence

International markets have a strong impact on gold prices in Pakistan. On Monday, gold was trading at around $3,387 per ounce, with a $20 premium. That’s a daily gain of $36.

The global gold price is heavily influenced by several factors:

    • Strength or weakness of the US Dollar

    • Inflation expectations

    • Interest rate decisions by central banks

    • Geopolitical tensions

All of these affect the price of gold since it’s considered a safe-haven asset during uncertain times.

US Dollar and Gold: A Delicate Relationship

Gold is traded globally in US dollars. When the dollar strengthens, gold becomes expensive for buyers using other currencies. This usually pushes gold prices down.

As of now, the US Dollar Index (DXY) is showing strength, trading at around 97.90. This adds pressure on gold prices. The stronger the dollar, the weaker the appeal of gold for international buyers.

What’s Happening in the US Economy?

Several developments in the United States have created ripples in the gold market:

    • There were rumors that former US President Donald Trump might remove Federal Reserve Chairman Jerome Powell, though he has denied this.

    • Congresswoman Anna Paulina Luna has accused Powell of perjury related to the Fed’s renovation plans.

    • FOMC Governor Adriana Kugler stated that the Fed should not lower interest rates soon due to inflation concerns.

    • San Francisco Fed President Mary Daly mentioned that two rate cuts are possible in 2025 but warned against waiting too long.

    • Fed Governor Christopher Waller supported a possible rate cut in July, citing economic risks.

    • All these statements influence the perception of future interest rates, which directly impacts gold’s value.

Why Are Gold Prices Important for Pakistan?

Gold prices are important in Pakistan for several reasons:

    Weddings and Traditions

Gold jewelry plays a major role in Pakistani weddings. Price changes can affect budgets and jewelry demand.

    Investment and Savings

Many Pakistanis see gold as a safe investment. When inflation rises or the rupee weakens, gold becomes more attractive.

    Imports and Trade

Pakistan imports most of its gold. That means global prices and the USD/PKR exchange rate directly affect local gold costs.

    Should You Buy or Wait?

This depends on your goal. Buy now if:

    • You need gold for an upcoming wedding or event.

    • You are looking for a long-term investment.

    • You believe global uncertainty will continue.

    Wait If:

    • You expect the USD to weaken, which could lower gold prices.

    • You think interest rates in the US will rise further, reducing gold demand.

How Are Gold Prices Calculated in Pakistan?

Gold prices in Pakistan are derived from the international market price. These prices are then converted using the current USD to PKR exchange rate. They are also adjusted based on:

    • Local taxes and duties

    • Premiums added by local jewelers

    • Supply and demand within the country

    Final Thoughts

Gold prices in Pakistan are closely linked to global trends and local conditions. Over the past few days, we’ve seen both increases and slight drops. The international gold market, US dollar strength, and central bank policies all play major roles in these movements.

Whether you’re a buyer, investor, or simply curious, keeping track of gold trends can help you make better decisions.

    Stay updated. Stay informed.

FAQs About Gold Prices in Pakistan

Why do gold prices change daily?

They change due to global market movements, currency exchange rates, and local demand.

Is gold a safe investment in Pakistan?

Yes, many consider gold a hedge against inflation and currency devaluation.

Does silver follow the same price trends as gold?

Not always. Silver is cheaper and may react differently to market changes.

Will gold prices go down in 2025?

It depends on global events, interest rates, and the strength of the US dollar. Keep an eye on economic updates.

Along this breathtaking route, travelers can explore several unique tourist attractions that make the trip even more memorable. Below are some must-visit stops on the way:

Lake Saiful Malook is one of the most iconic spots in Pakistan’s northern areas. Located at an elevation of 10,578 feet, this alpine lake is surrounded by snow-capped peaks and lush green slopes.

What makes this lake truly special is the romantic folklore attached to it. It is said that a Persian prince, Saiful Malook, fell in love with a fairy princess named Badri Jamala at this very lake. The story has been passed down for generations and adds a magical feel to the area.

    Visitors can enjoy:

    • Boating in the clear blue waters

    • Horseback riding near the lake’s edge

    Lulusar Lake

Roughly 48 kilometers from Naran, travelers will reach Lulusar Lake, a dazzling water body located at an altitude of 11,190 feet. The lake is surrounded by rugged snow-covered mountains and wide-open skies, offering a view straight out of a painting.

Lulusar Lake is also the source of the Kunhar River, which flows through the Kaghan Valley. Its calm, mirror-like surface reflects the surrounding peaks, making it a favorite spot for photographers and nature lovers.

    Popular activities include:

    Sooch Waterfall

A lesser-known but incredibly charming stop along the way is Sooch Waterfall. Tucked away in the hills, this waterfall offers a refreshing escape from the road. The cascading waters are icy cold, fed directly from melting glaciers.

Tourists often describe the sound of the falling water mixed with birdsong as soothing and peaceful. The lush greenery around the waterfall provides a cool and shaded resting point, perfect for a short break.

    Highlights include:

    • A natural photo spot with flowing water

    • A cool mist that refreshes tired travelers

    • Easy trails for a light walk in nature

While not as famous as the lakes, Sooch Waterfall is a hidden gem worth visiting.

    Ansu Lake

For those who love trekking and adventure, Ansu Lake is a perfect challenge. Shaped like a teardrop, the lake sits high in the mountains and requires a hike of about 5-6 hours from Lake Saiful Malook.

The name “Ansu” means “tear” in Urdu, which refers to the unique shape of the lake. The hike to reach it is demanding, but the rewards are great—majestic views, pure mountain air, and an unmatched sense of accomplishment.

    What you’ll experience:

    • A high-altitude trek with stunning views

    • Opportunity to spot rare alpine wildlife

    • A peaceful, untouched environment

Ansu Lake is not recommended for beginners, but for experienced trekkers, it’s one of the highlights of the Kaghan region.

    Bhattal Town Shops

Before reaching Babusar Top, travelers pass through small towns like Bhattal, where local culture and tradition come alive. This is a great place to stretch your legs, shop for local items, and interact with the friendly locals.

Shops in Bhattal sell a variety of products such as:

    • Palosa and Ber honey: These are organic and sourced from the regions of Karak and Lachi (Kohat). Known for their purity, they are not only popular locally but are also exported to Gulf countries.

    • Woolen shawls and caps: Handwoven by local artisans, these items are both warm and beautiful.

    • Dry fruits, herbal teas, and local snacks: Perfect for a quick energy boost.

    • Handmade souvenirs and keychains: Great for gifting and keeping memories of your trip.

    • Glacier-chilled drinks: Cold drinks are often stored in natural ice or glacier-fed water for an extra refreshing taste.

A quick stop here allows visitors to support the local economy and take a piece of Babusar’s culture home with them.

    Experience Shared by Visitors

Many visitors describe Babusar as unmatched in natural beauty. From enjoying cold drinks cooled by glaciers to listening to patriotic songs while ascending the mountain, each journey is unique.

One tourist from Peshawar said, “I’ve seen many places, but nothing compares to Babusar. It’s a perfect blend of thrill and peace.”

    • Wild goats and sheep

The forests nearby are filled with pine and oak trees. However, farming is limited due to the cold climate and high altitude.

    The Historical Link

Historians believe the name “Babusar” may have originated from “Babur,” the Mughal emperor who passed through this route in the 1500s. Over time, it evolved into Babusar Top, becoming a well-known travel route and tourist site.

    A Photographer’s Paradise

Babusar Top is not just for tourists. Photographers, vloggers, and nature lovers come here to capture its magical landscape. The flowing streams, steep road curves, and distant peaks provide perfect backdrops for memorable photos and videos.

    • Sharp road bends

    Safety Tips

    • Avoid driving after dark.

    • Use vehicles with strong brakes.

    • Carry tyre chains if snowfall is expected.

    • Make sure to fill fuel in Naran as there are no fuel stations beyond.

Vendors like Sher Zaman, a honey seller, rely on tourism to support their livelihood. These cultural elements add more depth to the travel experience.

The best time to visit Babusar Top is between June and early October. During these months, the road is usually clear of snow, and weather conditions are safer. Avoid traveling during monsoon or after mid-October, as snow starts falling early in high-altitude areas.

Mosquito Killer: Your Guide to a Mosquito-Free Life

Mosquitoes are more than just annoying pests. They can carry serious diseases like malaria, dengue, and Zika virus. A mosquito bite may seem small, but it can lead to big health problems. That’s why using an effective mosquito killer is important for every home.

This blog covers everything you need to know about mosquito killers what they are, how they work, types, benefits, safety tips, and how to choose the best one for your needs.

    What Is a Mosquito Killer?

A mosquito killer is a device or product designed to reduce or eliminate mosquitoes from your environment. It attracts, traps, or kills mosquitoes using various methods like light, heat, electricity, or chemicals.

Mosquito killers help lower the number of mosquitoes around you, offering relief from bites and reducing health risks.

Why You Need a Mosquito Killer

Mosquitoes may seem small, but they pose serious health and comfort issues. Using a mosquito killer is one of the most effective ways to reduce mosquito populations and protect your household.

Here’s why investing in a mosquito killer is essential:

    Prevents Mosquito Bites

Mosquito bites can cause itching, redness, and irritation. In sensitive individuals, they may lead to allergic reactions or skin infections. A mosquito killer helps reduce the number of mosquitoes, minimizing the chances of bites indoors and outdoors.

Reduces the Risk of Mosquito-Borne Diseases

Mosquitoes are known carriers of life-threatening diseases like:

    • Malaria

    • Dengue

    • Zika virus

    • Chikungunya

    • West Nile virus

By eliminating mosquitoes from your environment, you lower the risk of catching these diseases, especially in tropical and humid areas where mosquitoes thrive.

    Improves Sleep Quality

Mosquitoes are most active at night. Their buzzing and biting can disturb your sleep, leaving you tired and irritated the next day. A mosquito killer ensures a peaceful, uninterrupted night’s rest by keeping these pests away from your bedroom.

Creates a Safer Environment for Children and Pets

Children and pets are more vulnerable to mosquito bites and may react more strongly to them. Certain mosquito repellents may not be safe for use around them. A reliable mosquito killer offers protection without the need to apply chemicals directly to their skin.

    Supports Outdoor Comfort and Activities

Whether you’re relaxing on your patio, having a BBQ, or camping, mosquitoes can ruin your experience. Using outdoor mosquito killers allows you to enjoy your time without constantly swatting insects or applying sticky repellents.

Even clean and well-maintained homes can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes, especially during the rainy season or in areas with high humidity. That’s why prevention is better than cure. A mosquito killer is a practical and long-term solution to keeping your home safe, comfortable, and mosquito-free.

    Types of Mosquito Killers

There are several types of mosquito killers available today. Each works differently and suits different environments. Your choice should depend on the area you want to protect, the level of mosquito infestation, and your budget.

    Electric Mosquito Killers

These devices attract mosquitoes using ultraviolet (UV) light. Once mosquitoes come close, an electric grid kills them instantly. They are commonly used indoors and in semi-covered outdoor spaces. These zappers are chemical-free and quiet but rely on electricity and have a limited coverage area.

    Mosquito Traps

Mosquito traps use a combination of carbon dioxide (CO2), body heat, or scent to lure mosquitoes. Once they approach the trap, they are captured and eventually die. These are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. They cover larger areas but may be more expensive and take time to reduce the mosquito population.

    Mosquito Coils and Vaporizers

These options release chemical vapors into the air, either through burning coils or electric vaporizers. The vapors repel or kill mosquitoes in small rooms. They are affordable and easy to use, making them common in homes. However, prolonged use can affect indoor air quality, especially for people with breathing issues.

    Mosquito Sprays

Sprays are quick-acting solutions that kill mosquitoes on direct contact. These are ideal for spot treatment in rooms or on surfaces. While sprays are effective instantly, their results are short-term and may need frequent reapplication. Overuse can also be harmful to health and the environment.

    Ultrasonic Mosquito Repellers

These devices produce high-frequency sound waves that are said to disturb mosquitoes and drive them away. They are silent, chemical-free, and safe for indoor use. However, their effectiveness is still under debate, and results may vary depending on the space and mosquito species.

    Natural Mosquito Killers

Natural options include essential oils like citronella or eucalyptus, mosquito-repelling plants, and homemade traps. These are safe for homes with children or pets and are environmentally friendly. While they may not eliminate mosquitoes entirely, they can offer mild and consistent protection in low-risk areas.

    How Do Mosquito Killers Work?

    Each type works differently:

    • Zappers: Attract mosquitoes with light and electrocute them.

    • Traps: Use carbon dioxide and scent to mimic human breath, then capture the mosquito.

    • Coils and vaporizers: Emit insecticides that either kill or drive away mosquitoes.

    • Ultrasonic devices: Disrupt mosquito behavior using sound waves.

    • Sprays: Kill mosquitoes instantly upon contact.

    • Natural methods: Repel mosquitoes without killing them, using smell or barriers.

Benefits of Using a Mosquito Killer

Using a mosquito killer offers many advantages:

    • Peaceful sleep without buzzing or itching

    • Health protection from dangerous mosquito diseases

    • Increased comfort during outdoor activities

    • Less use of harmful chemicals when using eco-friendly options

    • Better hygiene especially in tropical and humid regions

Safety Tips for Using Mosquito Killers

Always follow safety instructions to avoid harm:

    • Keep electric zappers away from children and pets

    • Don’t overuse chemical sprays indoors

    • Ventilate the room after using vaporizers or coils

    • Unplug devices when not in use

    • Store sprays and refills in a cool, dry place

    • Choose non-toxic options for sensitive groups like kids or asthma patients

    Where to Use Mosquito Killers

To get the best results, it’s important to place your mosquito killer in the right location. Indoors, mosquito killers work best when placed in areas where people spend most of their time, such as bedrooms, living rooms, and kitchens. Positioning them near windows or doorways is also effective, as these are common mosquito entry points.

For outdoor use, mosquito killers should be placed in gardens, patios, or near standing water, which is where mosquitoes often breed. Setting them near entry points of the home can help prevent mosquitoes from coming inside.

It’s also important to avoid placing mosquito killers near fans or air vents, as strong airflow can reduce their ability to attract or trap mosquitoes effectively.

What to Look for When Buying a Mosquito Killer

Here are some things to consider:

    Area Coverage

Small room or large outdoor space? Choose a device that matches the size of your space.

    Power Source

Electric, battery, solar, or manual? Choose what’s convenient for you.

    Safety

Go for non-toxic or child-safe options if you have kids or pets at home.

    Ease of Cleaning

Traps and zappers should have removable parts for easy cleaning.

    Noise Level

Some zappers or ultrasonic devices can be noisy. Check reviews before buying.

    Price and Warranty

Balance quality with your budget. Look for brands that offer customer support and warranty.

    Conclusion

A mosquito killer is not just a comfort item, it’s a health necessity, especially in mosquito-prone areas. Whether you prefer a high-tech zapper, a chemical spray, or a natural method, there’s an option for everyone.

Choose the right type based on your space, needs, and budget. Follow safety instructions and combine it with preventive practices for a mosquito-free home.

    Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Are mosquito killers safe for pets?

Many are, but always read labels. Avoid chemical-based ones near pets.

Can mosquito zappers be used outdoors?

Yes, but ensure they’re weather-resistant and placed in covered areas.

Do ultrasonic mosquito repellents really work?

Results vary. Some users find them helpful, while others notice no difference.

How often should I clean my mosquito zapper?

Clean weekly or as per the user manual to keep it working well.

    Are natural mosquito killers effective?

They can help reduce bites but are best used with other control methods.

Shah Mahmood Qureshi acquitted in May 9 case; Yasmin Rashid sentenced to 10-years

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Lahore on Tuesday sentenced several Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders, including Dr Yasmin Rashid and Mian Mehmood ur Rasheed, to 10 years of rigorous imprisonment each in connection with the May 9 violence case.

Ex-Punjab Governor Omar Sarfraz Cheema, PTI leader Senator Ejaz Chaudhry, and Afzal Azeem Pahat have also been sentenced by the court in the same case.

Meanwhile, the court acquitted former foreign minister and PTI Vice Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the same case, who, according to his defence, was in Karachi on the day of the alleged incident. Others acquitted in the same case include Hamza Azeem Pahat, Rana Tanveer, and Aizaz Rafiq.

An Anti-Terrorism Court (ATC) in Sargodha sentenced Punjab Assembly Opposition Leader Ahmed Khan Bachar, Member of National Assembly (MNA) Mohammad Ahmed Chattha, and several other PTI workers to 10 years in prison each in a vandalism case related to the May 9 riots, registered at the Musakhel police station.

Opposition Leader Bachar has announced that he will challenge the conviction in the high court, alleging political victimisation and constitutional violations in the ATC’s judgment.

In a statement, Bachar asserted that the ruling was not grounded in constitutional principles but was instead politically motivated. “The verdict was delivered in a case that clearly deviated from constitutional standards,” he said.

He further claimed that legal procedures were not properly followed during the trial. Criticising the government, he stated, “Following the 26th Amendment, the ruling regime has brought the judiciary under its influence.”

The May 9 cases are linked to the violent protests that erupted across the country following the arrest of former Prime Minister Imran Khan from the premises of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) in a graft case. The unrest included attacks on public property and military installations, such as the Corps Commander House in Lahore, also known as Jinnah House.

While multiple PTI leaders and workers were released on bail after their arrests, many still remain behind bars.

Fortunately, her team quickly issued a statement, denying the video’s authenticity and warning of legal action.

The Pakistani media industry and fellow actors rallied behind her. Celebrities like Hania Aamir, Wahaj Ali, and even director Nadeem Baig publicly supported her and condemned the use of AI-generated content to malign reputations. The incident sparked a broader discussion about digital safety, deepfake ethics, and celebrity privacy.

Aina, in a calm and mature post, thanked her fans for their support and said, “No one should ever have to defend themselves against something they never did.” Her response won hearts and showed emotional strength beyond her years.

In a recent Q&A, Aina shared that she’s currently reviewing two major offers from OTT platforms: one is a female-led social thriller, and the other is a light-hearted college rom-com. She also expressed interest in exploring film roles, stating that she wants her debut movie to be “meaningful, not flashy.”

She’s also working on co-writing a short film based on emotional healing, inspired by Pinjra’s themes. If successful, it could mark her first step as a scriptwriter and creative collaborator.

Mohsin Naqvi arrives in Dhaka as pressure mounts on BCB chief ahead of key meeting

Asian Cricket Council (ACC) President Mohsin Naqvi arrived in Dhaka ahead of the council’s annual general meeting, scheduled to take place tomorrow, July 24.

He was warmly received at the airport by Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Nazmul Hassan Aminul Islam.

The ACC’s annual general meeting, to be chaired by Naqvi, is expected to finalize several important matters, including the upcoming Asia Cup scheduled for September. However, tensions have arisen as pressure mounts on BCB President Aminul Islam to withdraw from hosting the meeting.

According to media reports, BCB board directors have advised Aminul Islam to avoid upsetting the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), which has objected to the meeting being held in Dhaka. The BCCI cited political tensions with Bangladesh as the reason it cannot send its officials to attend the meeting in person. The Indian board has also expressed unwillingness to participate virtually.

Reports suggested that BCCI’s stance has been backed by Sri Lanka and Oman, who have aligned themselves with India on the issue.

Despite the opposition, Mohsin Naqvi remains firm on holding the meeting in Dhaka. However, pressure continues to mount on the BCB to step back. Reports say that BCB directors advised their president not to risk India’s displeasure, but Aminul Islam reportedly responded, “I have given my word for this meeting, and I cannot go back on it now.”

Meanwhile, at the ICC annual meetings in Singapore, PCB Chief Executive Sameer Ahmed has been trying to convince ACC members to support holding the meeting in Dhaka. India, however, remains adamant about not participating and is still being persuaded to attend the meeting virtually.

Brock Lesnar reportedly on ‘banned list’; WWE comeback in doubt

Brock Lesnar, one of the most popular wrestlers and  UFC fighters, has been added to a “banned list”, former UFC heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has claimed.

A possible inclusion could mean the end of Lesnar’s wrestling career.

In an interview, Daniel Cormier dismissed the idea that he might face Brock Lesnar in WWE. Instead, he revealed that Lesnar is currently on a banned list. However, Cormier did not explain whether this ban was from WWE, UFC, or their parent company, TKO Group.

For context, UFC and WWE are now under one parent company called TKO, which was formed after UFC’s merger with WWE.

Cormier added, “Brock is on the banned list right now. He’s in serious trouble. I can’t say exactly what he did, but it’s bad.”

Lesnar’s return to WWE looks difficult. Whether the ban came from WWE or TKO, it’s likely to affect his future in wrestling.

Brock Lesnar was last seen in a WWE ring in August 2023, when he faced Cody Rhodes at the SummerSlam event.

Many fans expected him to return in January 2024 during the Royal Rumble. However, that didn’t happen. Around that time, Janel Grant, a former WWE employee, filed a lawsuit against former WWE chairman Vince McMahon.

At first, Lesnar’s name wasn’t mentioned in the case. But it was widely believed that he was involved. In February 2025, his name was officially included in the lawsuit.

Since then, WWE and TKO reportedly dropped plans for Brock Lesnar’s return.

  • Senate body slams Railways for failing to report accurately on losses, corruption

Senate body slams Railways for failing to report accurately on losses, corruption

The Senate’s Standing Committee on Railways has criticized the Ministry of Railways over its inability to report accurate figures concerning financial losses and corruption. According to media reports, the committee has outlined the Ministry’s lack of seriousness, requesting all relevant officials to be held accountable as inaccurate figures misled the parliament.

Reports reveal that Senator Jam Saifullah Khan, who chairs the Standing Committee on Railways, highlighted how the ministry had provided inaccurate and inconsistent figures even after receiving multiple reminders, highlighting that the inability to follow parliament’s orders reveals the lack of accountability within the ministry.

Commenting on the issue of inaccurate information, Senator Shahadat Awan reportedly described the Ministry’s action as a breach of privilege. Reports indicate that prior to remarking on the situation, the Senator had asked for the Ministry to provide him with data pertaining to instances of corruption and financial losses.

The Senator also underlined the importance of transparency in public affairs, especially those that concern large sums of taxpayer funds. As per reports, the standing committee has issued directives for the Ministry of Railways to investigate and identify officials associated with the submission of inaccurate information.

The railways secretary has responded to the aforementioned concerns, conceding that the reports were inaccurate. He highlighted that discrepancies in data existed because of confusions between fiscal and calendar year data. However, it merits a mention that the secretary has suggested that the information has been reconciled.

Addressing concerns regarding accountability, the secretary reportedly detailed the lodging of 3,230 First Information Reports (FIR) against officials over a period of five years. Reports suggest that these FIR’s were filed against officials involved in embezzlement, misuse of authority, and theft.

While the Ministry has been able to recover Rs109.487 million in losses from the aforementioned cases, a staggering Rs103.396 million still remains unrecovered. Data from reports indicates that 1,080 cases are currently ongoing, suggesting that additional funds may be recovered.

As per the data, 1,555 officials have been convicted with 309 being acquitted. For the cases that remain open however, Senator Awan has criticized the ministry for failing to share updates on these FIRs and demanded a comprehensive report detailing all unresolved and reopened cases, urging stronger collaboration with law enforcement.
