‘Where are the activists’; Muneeb Butt slams silence over Sabri Qawwals’ murder

Actor Muneeb Butt has expressed deep sorrow and regret over the brutal murder of members of the Sabri Qawwal family and strongly criticized human rights activists and social leaders.

In a video statement shared on social media, Muneeb Butt said, “The brutality with which members of the Sabri family were targeted is not only unbearable but also the worst example of cruelty against humanity.”

He questioned, “Where are all those voices on such tragedies, those human rights organizations and social activists who raise their voices even when terrorists are killed?”

The actor stressed that speaking up for the oppressed should not be selective. “Raising your voice in favor of the oppressed should not be only for specific situations or purposes, but it should be spoken on every occasion when the sanctity of human lives is violated,” he said.

Muneeb Butt added, “Three members of the Sabri Qawwal family were killed. What will happen to their families? They were also artists from Karachi like us, who were going to perform to share love.”

He demanded, “There should be a transparent investigation into the incident, and the culprits should be punished severely so that no artist or common citizen is subjected to such cruelty in the future.”

The video statement is going viral on social media, and a large number of users have expressed support for Muneeb Butt’s demands.

The incident he was referring to took place earlier this week in Balochistan.

At least three members of a Qawwali group from Karachi were martyred, while seven others were injured in a gun attack on a passenger coach near Niemurgh Cross in the Kalat district. They were en route to Quetta to perform at a cultural event when unidentified gunmen opened fire on their vehicle.

Media reports citing local officials and the provincial government spokesperson confirmed the attack, blaming it on Fitna al-Hindustan, a proxy group allegedly backed by India, which has been involved in multiple such attacks in the region.

Imran Khan will be shifted from Adiala to new federal jail: Sohail Warraich

Veteran journalist and columnist Suhail Warraich has claimed that former prime minister Imran Khan, is likely to be shifted from Adiala Jail Rawalpindi to a newly built federal jail in Islamabad.

In his column titled “Amreeki yaatra sab kuch badal deti hai (A visit to the US changes everything)” in Jang Newspaper published on Tuesday, Warraich cited past visits of Pakistani officials to the US, describing how it brought changes in Pakistan’s foreign and interior policies.

Calling the recent lunch Chief of Army Staff (COAS) Field Marshal Asim Munir had with US President Donald Trump in the White House “unusual”, he wrote, “The meeting of Asim Munir with US President Trump surprised everyone.”

“I am not an astrologer, but if every past high-level Pakistan-U.S. meeting has had its effects, then it is clearly visible that this time too, everything will change. The first result of this visit has already appeared in the form of the revival of USAID. The first political effect in Pakistan is likely to be that prisoner number 804 will be shifted from Adiala provincial jail to a new federal jail in Islamabad.

“The new jail is in the preparation phase and is awaiting its new guest, as it falls under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Interior.”

On August 5, 2023, Imran Khan was arrested from his residence at Zaman Park Lahore, shortly after his conviction in the Toshakhana case, and was held in Attock jail.

Following the Islamabad High Court (IHC) order, Imran Khan was shifted to Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi on September 27, 2023.

As legal battles continued on multiple fronts, an Islamabad accountability court in January this year convicted Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, in the £190 million case, sentencing them to 14 and seven years imprisonment, respectively.

As per the 148-page verdict, the former premier was convicted of “corrupt practices” and “misuse of authority”, while the ex-first lady was convicted of “involvement in illegal activities”.

Currently, Imran Khan is held in jail under high security and with B-class facilities due to his status as a former premier.

  • Audit report reveals Rs244 billion overbilling fraud by electricity distribution companies

Audit report reveals Rs244 billion overbilling fraud by electricity distribution companies

A report by the Auditor General of Pakistan has implicated eight electricity distribution companies (Discos) in a staggering financial fraud case amounting to Rs244 billion. According to reports, the Discos overcharged users to hide the true magnitude of power theft, line losses and the sheer magnitude of operational inefficiencies.

The Auditor General’s report indicates that Electric Supply Companies of Islamabad (Iesco), Lahore (Lesco), Hyderabad (Hesco), Multan (Mepco), Peshawar (Pesco), Quetta (Qesco), Sukkur (Sepco), and Tribal Areas Electric Supply Company (Tesco) grossly overbilled consumers from 2023-24. As per the data, consumers were overbilled for a staggering 900 million units of power.

Details from the audit suggest that five discos overcharged consumers by a whopping Rs47.81 in a single month. Reports reveal that 278,649 consumers faced higher bills as a result of this action by these discos.

As per reports, consumers in Quetta faced the brunt of the fraud as Qesco passed on a colossal Rs148 billion in extra charges to agricultural consumers. Authorities levied inflated tube well charges in the region to reduce the financial losses faced by Qesco.

While the aforementioned actions detrimentally impacted consumers, no officials have been held accountable for their participation in the fraud. Audit teams have also been denied access to documents pertaining to the utilisation of 1,432 feeders by authorities to overbill consumers by Rs18.64 billion.

Data from reports reveals that officials passed on Rs22 billion in additional charges to consumers to hide losses resulting from technical issues, titling the extra charge as a “load adjustment”. While authorities have issued some refunds, amounting to Rs2.18 billion for Pesco and Rs5.29 billion for incorrect meter readings, it is unlikely that consumers will be compensated for the overbilling, as auditors have noted that a majority of refund claims lack necessary supporting documentation.

In other recent power sector-related developments, a large drop in revenues from electricity bills was recorded, with falling usage by consumers being cited as a direct consequence of a fall in total power usage. As per the data, during the first nine months of FY 2024-25, total power usage by consumers recorded a sharp 3.6 percent decline.

Total power usage fell from a respectable 83,109 GWh to just 80,111 GWh during the aforementioned period. Data from reports suggests that industrial electricity usage logged a sharp fall too, falling to 21,082 GWh in FY 2024-25  from 28,830 GWh in FY 2023-24.

  • Pakistan Champions refuse to share points after India pull out of WCL clash

Pakistan Champions refuse to share points after India pull out of WCL clash

The World Championship of Legends (WCL) 2025 has been plunged into deeper controversy after the Pakistan Champions rejected the decision to share points with the India Champions following the abandonment of their highly anticipated clash on Sunday.

The match between Pakistan and India was called off before the toss could take place, after Indian players reportedly withdrew from the fixture, objecting to the inclusion of Shahid Afridi in Pakistan’s playing XI.

According to media reports, players like Shikhar Dhawan and Harbhajan Singh refused to participate in the game unless Afridi was dropped. The demand was not accepted, and with tensions rising, tournament organisers ultimately decided to cancel the fixture.

The organisers released an official statement expressing regret over the cancellation and assured full ticket refunds for fans. However, the decision to award one point each to both teams has not gone down well with the Pakistan Champions.

According to journalist Saj Sadiq, the Pakistan camp is strongly opposing the points-sharing arrangement. They argue that since India failed to take the field, they should forfeit the match, and Pakistan should be awarded full points.

In most competitive formats, when a team refuses to play, the match is awarded to the opposing side. The Pakistan Champions are demanding the same treatment, and their stance has placed WCL’s rules and credibility under intense scrutiny.

Pakistan currently top the group with three points from two games, having already secured a win against England. If awarded full points for the abandoned match, their path to the final would be further strengthened.

The tournament organisers have yet to issue a final decision on the points dispute, but pressure continues to mount from fans and officials alike. With more fixtures on the way, clarity is urgently needed to restore confidence in the competition.

Alizeh Shah blames star singer for her fall on ramp

Actress Alizeh Shah has made explosive revelations about her experience in the entertainment industry, including her viral fall during a bridal fashion show featuring famous Pakistani singer Shazia Manzoor.

In a video statement shared on Instagram, Alizeh made a startling claim, saying, “My fall on the ramp wasn’t an accident. Shazia Manzoor kept grabbing and pushing me repeatedly, which made me lose balance.”

She added, “This behavior is a habit of hers. She’s done the same to Jannat Mirza before. Such actions can embarrass anyone, especially in a public setting.”

Alizeh also criticized host and actress Juggan Kazim for mocking the incident saying, “Instead of taking the matter seriously, Juggan Kazim made fun of my fall. That’s unprofessional.”

The actress stated she would no longer stay silent: “I won’t tolerate negativity and mistreatment anymore. I’ll keep speaking out against those who treat me unfairly.”

Her video quickly went viral, with fans appreciating her bravery and offering their support online.

In addition to the ramp incident, Alizeh Shah revealed disturbing details about a smear campaign allegedly run against her. “Money was spent to defame me, and a campaign was launched by paying social media pages,” she said.

“Later, allegations of vandalism and misbehavior were made against me. It was all part of a planned strategy,” she claimed.

“I never smoked in my makeup room, yet people accused me of it. Seniors and directors cast me and paid me for my work that doesn’t mean I have to tolerate everything,” she added.

Opening up about an uncomfortable incident, she said, “A senior actor threw his sweat on my face. When I spoke up, he took offense, as if I was supposed to treat his sweat like Zamzam water.”

Alizeh also talked about her struggles as a child artist, saying, “Seniors sit in air-conditioned rooms while we’re treated harshly. I faced a lot of difficulties growing up in this industry.”

Another major issue she highlighted was delayed payments, revealing: “People in the industry pay us three to four months after the project ends, and even then, only after repeatedly asking for it.”

She added, “It felt like they were giving me charity instead of my rightful compensation. That attitude is deeply hurtful.”

In the past, actors Yasir Nawaz, Zarnish Khan, and Naveed Raza had accused Alizeh Shah of being rude on set. However, Yasir Nawaz and Zarnish Khan later issued public apologies to her.
