Aftab Iqbal slammed for glorifying Jaffar Express terrorists

Journalists and social media activists have slammed  YouTuber and former TV host Aftab Iqbal for glorifying the terrorists who had hijacked the Jaffar Express on Tuesday in Balochistan’s Bolan district.

Speaking on his YouTuber channel on Wednesday, the former TV host, while using the term “neutralise” for the brave Frontier Corps (FC) soldiers, said, “They (militants) were aware that FC personnel were at the top, surveilling the entire area. The way they (FC soldiers) were skillfully neutralised was beyond anyone’s imagination.”

Iqbal further claimed that the location that the terrorists chose for hijacking the train was an “ideal site”. He said, “Skillfully, tunnel No. 8 was chosen so that the train’s front and rear both remained inside the tunnel when it stopped. The explosion used to stop the train was also executed with exceptional expertise.”

He described the terrorist attack on the train as a “well-planned military operation” rather than an act of terror by an extremist group, adding, “The incident was not done by some small separatist, militant, or extremist group; there is proper military planning and strategy behind it.”

Journalists and activists hit out at Iqbal after clips from his vlog went viral. Prominent journalist and political talk show host Muneeb Farooq took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “Wow, Aftab Sahib, wow. Brilliant selection of words ‘neutralize’, ‘exceptional skill’—such glorification of the BLA animals. The mental state you are in makes a person act this way only when they are completely invested in a particular agenda or ideology. Thank God that your so-called ‘highly skilled’ BLA filth was eliminated like stray dogs yesterday by the brave soldiers of the Pakistan Army and FC.”

In a post on X, while sharing the short clip of Aftab Iqbal, journalist Waseem Abbasi wrote in the caption, “How delightfully Aftab Iqbal is praising the terrorists… Even the martyrdom of FC personnel is being referred to as ‘neutralised.’… A truly shameful act.”

A social media activist opined, “So-called journalists like Aftab Iqbal are not only betraying the blood of our martyrs by portraying… terrorists as heroes but are also promoting the enemy’s narrative… They are spewing venom against Pakistan. The time has come to hold these digital terrorists accountable and expose their sinister agendas.”

Speaking to a private media channel on Wednesday night, Director General (DG) Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry announced the completion of the two-day-long operation against the terrorists.

He said that security forces eliminated all 33 Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) terrorists who had hijacked the Jaffar Express, which was carrying more than 400 passengers — who were taken hostage on Tuesday noon.

“Whoever did this will be hunted down and brought to justice,” said Lt Gen Chaudhry, adding that the suicide bombers using hostages as human shields and were taken out by snipers.

He revealed that the terrorists martyred 21 passengers before the clearance operation had commenced. Furthermore, four FC personnel were also martyred during the attack in the Mushqaf area of the Bolan district.

National T20 Cup: PCB chief overturns fee cut for domestic cricketers

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has stepped in to halt the planned 75 percent reduction in match fees for domestic cricketers participating in the National T20 Cup.

According to a PCB spokesperson, the chairman has issued clear instructions to the Director of Domestic Cricket, preventing any cuts to player compensation. The board has also ordered an immediate review of match fees for all players.

Earlier, the PCB had announced a reduction in National T20 Cup match fees from PKR 40,000 to just PKR 10,000 per match, citing an increase in domestic tournaments as the reason.

The decision sparked a backlash from players and stakeholders, raising concerns about the financial well-being of domestic cricketers.

Following the PCB chairman’s intervention, domestic players can now expect a reassessment of their match fees, potentially reversing the drastic pay cut.

Punjab proposes inclusion of ‘good touch, bad touch’ awareness in school curriculum

The Punjab Home Department has sent a letter to the School Education Department, recommending the inclusion of ‘good touch, bad touch’ awareness in the curriculum to protect children from sexual abuse and inappropriate behaviour.

The letter highlights the rising cases of child abuse in recent months and stresses the need for a comprehensive and effective awareness campaign to educate children about their safety. The initiative aims to help children identify and report inappropriate behaviour.

The Home Department has suggested that a special module be introduced in early-grade textbooks to educate children about ‘good touch, bad touch’ and equip them with the knowledge to prevent potential exploitation.

The Punjab government has directed relevant authorities to take immediate action on this sensitive issue to ensure child protection. The Child Protection Bureau has also been instructed to collaborate with the School Education Department to launch an awareness campaign and educate as many children as possible on the subject.

Child Protection Bureau Chairperson and Punjab Assembly member Sarah Ahmed emphasised the importance of educating children on this critical issue, stating, “It is essential to teach children about inappropriate behaviour so they can recognise and report it.”

She further mentioned, “The Child Protection & Welfare Bureau has already been running a ‘Good Touch, Bad Touch’ awareness campaign, and after Ramadan, we will intensify our efforts.”

Domestic cricketers face 75% match fee cut in National T20 Cup

Pakistan’s domestic cricketers will face a significant pay cut in the upcoming National T20 Cup, as their match fees have been slashed by 75 per cent.

According to reports, players previously earned PKR 40,000 per match but will now receive only PKR 10,000, marking a reduction of PKR 30,000.

Officials from the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) have defended the decision, stating that the number of domestic tournaments has increased compared to the previous season. As a result, while the match fee for the National T20 Cup has been reduced, players are earning more overall throughout the season, PCB sources claim.

The National T20 Cup is set to begin on Friday, featuring 18 teams from 16 regions. However, the drastic reduction in match fees has raised concerns about financial sustainability for domestic cricketers.

Jaffar Express: Deadly train hijack comes to end as security forces eliminate all militants

The military on Wednesday announced that the Jaffar Express rescue operation was successfully completed after nearly 30 hours as all attackers were eliminated and hostages freed.

Speaking to a private news channel, Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) chief Lieutenant General Ahmed Sharif Chaudhry confirmed that the complex operation had been completed by units from the Pakistan Air Force (PAF), Special Services Group (SSG), army and Frontier Corps (FC).

He said that all 33 terrorists had been killed while confirming that no  passenger was harmed during the clearance operation.

However, he added, before the clearance operation, 21 passengers were martyred by the terrorists.

At least four FC soldiers were also martyred during an exchange of fire.

Furthermore, Lt Gen Sharif said that the attackers had placed the hostages in groups with suicide bombers sitting amongst them. The suicide bombers were taken out by snipers, he added.

The chief of the military’s media-wing confirmed reports that the terrorists were in contact with their handlers in Afghanistan, and said that security personnel were now conducting a sweep of the train as per the SOPs.

  • Gwadar still lacking access to power, water: progress review

Gwadar still lacking access to power, water: progress review

A decade after the launch of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC), authorities have realised that Gwadar still faces a lack of clean water and a stable source of power. As per reports, these details were uncovered in a progress review meeting held on Tuesday.

Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal chaired the meeting, during which relevant parties expressed great dissatisfaction regarding the lack of development in Gwadar. However, authorities have set new deadlines for development targets to be met.

A statement issued by the Ministry of Planning revealed that Ahsan Iqbal outlined how Gwadar is still not effectively on the national grid and issued directives to the power division and Quetta Electric Supply Company (QESC) to post a progress report on the status of Gwadar’s power connection.

According to credible reports, Ahsan Iqbal, in the previous review meeting, had requested a ‘compliance report’ to be submitted within a week, under which authorities were expected to connect Gwadar and the surrounding free zone to the national grid.

However, two months have gone by, and limited progress has been made to connect Gwadar to grid electricity. Currently, the city is powered by electricity that Pakistan imports from neighbouring Iran.

Nevertheless, Pakistan does not need to import electricity for Gwadar as there is excess electricity in the system. Reports place the cost of this surplus power to Pakistan at 2.1 trillion rupees in ‘idle capacity charges’, which are paid to power producers by levying an 18 rupee per unit charge on consumers.

The federal government’s efforts to provide Gwadar with the right infrastructure is one of many attempts to revitalize the crown jewel of the CPEC. Recently, Gwadar witnessed the operationalisation of its airport, which was funded by the Chinese government in the form of a grant to Pakistan.

China has also assisted Pakistan in its attempt to provide a stable power supply to Gwadar. As per reports, China gave equipment to relevant authorities to electrify the city and laid out infrastructure to provide clean drinking water to its residents.

China’s equipment for Pakistan included a whopping 15,000 solar panels (of which 5000 were provided under a grant program) and 150 water filtration plants. However, until recently, the installation of this equipment had not been authorized.

With authorities now expected to install the aforementioned equipment, many believe that Gwadar’s need to rely on imported electricity could fall sharply.

  • Reko Diq mine to become operational by 2028

Reko Diq mine to become operational by 2028

The Reko Diq mining project is reportedly set to become operational in 2028, with estimates expecting a generation of a staggering $74 billion in cash flows over a period of 37 years. As per credible reports, the Oil and Gas Development Company Limited has revealed that the plan aims to extract vast amounts of copper and gold which could greatly boost the economy.

The project, which has seen great interest from Canada’s Barrick Gold, will require an initial investment of $5.5 billion. As per reports, the company is a 50 percent shareholder in the project and stands to benefit immensely from extraction operations.

The CEO of the company, Mark Bristow, outlined how the $74 billion cash flow figure has been calculated considering “long-term” price conditions. According to reports, officials are attempting to establish domestic refineries which could greatly increase the value of local minerals and reduce the cash-strapped country’s dependence on foreign countries.

Saudi Arabian firm Manara Minerals will take a 15 percent stake in the project, with potential investment from the Saudi investor surging to a whopping $1 billion. According to experts, Pakistan’s mining sector is attracting more foreign investment as global companies expect to enjoy great returns from local mines.

Reports indicate that the Reko Diq mine, located in Balochistan’s Chagai district, currently holds the largest proven reserves of copper in the world. Analysts claim that Pakistan’s economy could benefit immensely as the mine is expected to produce $2.8 billion annually in export revenues.

Furthermore, mining operations are expected to create thousands of jobs thereby significantly benefiting local businesses and residents alike. Currently, unemployment rate sits at an uneasy 9.13 percent in Balochistan.

However, unemployment rates could be revised downwards as an expansion plan is also being considered which requires pumping upwards of $3.5 billion into the project to boost annual copper and gold production levels to 400,000 tons and 500000 ounces respectively.

Reports reveal that currently, Pakistan’s mineral sector contributes a measly 3.2 percent towards the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and accounts for just 0.1 percent of mineral exports. This could soon change with the operationalization of the Reko Diq mine as the inflow of foreign capital may allow for the mining sector to witness significant growth in the coming years.

However, terrorist activities have been on the rise in Balochistan – a province rich in minerals.  The federal government might have to expend a greater number of resources to prove to international investors that the country is still safe for business activities.
