Army major adopts rescued baby girl after unknown persons bury her alive

Major Waqas of the Pakistan Armed Forces has adopted a baby girl who was rescued after she was almost buried alive in Nowshera.

Unknown persons tried to bury alive the newborn in a graveyard in Nowshera on February 7. Mourners at another grave noticed the baby and quickly informed Rescue 1122. The child was then taken to a hospital for medical assessment.

Sources informed the media that the baby was wrapped in a cloth and covered with dirt. A viral video shows a man removing the dirt from the child’s body, thinking she is dead, when she raises her hand. The men then gently lift the child who is wearing nothing but the thin cloth she was wrapped in. Dirt covers the newborn’s face and body.

Major Waqas then quickly filed legal documents and went to a civil court to adopt the child. Pictures of the Major holding the infant, now fully dressed in a yellow outfit complete with a cap and wrapping blanket, spread like lightning on social media sites.

In stark contrast to the people who tried to abandon her to die, rescue personnel and other officials can be seen kissing her and holding her close in videos shared widely on social media.

Saudi fast food giant Al-Baik is officially coming to Pakistan

Saudi Arabia’s popular fast-food giant Al-Baik is finally coming to Pakistan with an agreement now in its final stages, media reports said.

According to reports, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan, who is currently in the Kingdom for a Pakistan-made products expo, has discussed with the fast-food brand’s owner, Rami Abu Ghazala, the operational framework and potential locations for Al-Baik’s branches across major Pakistani cities.

While details of these locations and an exact launch date is yet to be revealed, the commerce ministry has also confirmed the development. “The first AlBaik branches in Pakistan are expected to open soon, creating new job opportunities and strengthening economic ties between the two nations,” it said in a statement Saturday.

Khan also met with other prominent Saudi businessmen to explore avenues for strengthening bilateral trade ties. He highlighted Pakistan’s improving business environment, facilitated by initiatives like the single window system and the national compliance centre.

Saudi investors, reports said, are interested to invest in Pakistan’s energy, agriculture, IT and construction sectors.

Earlier, while inaugurating Pakistan’s first ever single-country ‘Made in Pakistan’ exhibition in Jeddah, the minister stressed the significance of economic collaboration between the two countries, outlining numerous avenues where Pakistan and Saudi Arabia were collaborating with respect to the economy.

He also extended his appreciation towards Saudi officials for their support in setting up the entire event, and said the exhibition was an embodiment of the lasting Pakistan-Saudi bilateral ties.

The minister said that strategic partnership was strengthened by shared cultural ties and a common religion, and outlined how Pakistan’s goods and services would gain traction by being displayed at the exhibition.

The minister said he intends to increase investment inflows into the country while improving trade relations with Saudi Arabia. According to him, this will be possible by closely following a certain economic roadmap.

Reports said the minister also commented on how the two countries could potentially collaborate on issues pertaining to food security, mining, energy and human resource (HR) development. He mentioned that Pakistan could leverage its growing industrial base and flexible economy to work on collaborative projects.

Kamal said that Saudi investments would be prioritised in the country and that investors could go through channels set up by the Special Investment Facilitation Council (SIFC) to benefit from investment opportunities. Islamabad’s stance seems to be one of utilising Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 to boost investment inflows into the country.

While congratulating the Kingdom for winning the rights to host the 2034 FIFA World cup, the minister also took the opportunity to display Pakistan’s football manufacturing industry. He said that Pakistan would continue to produce footballs for World Cup events.

  • ‘Pakistan should release Imran Khan to restore democracy’: US lawmaker says in viral speech

‘Pakistan should release Imran Khan to restore democracy’: US lawmaker says in viral speech

Hours after writing a letter to Pakistani civilian and military leadership for the release of jailed former prime minister (PM) Imran Khan, United States (US) House of Representatives member Joe Wilson has reiterated his demand on the floor of the House.

Addressing the House, the congressman said that Pakistan’s democracy has been undermined since after the “illegal” sentencing of the founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

“[I have] strong disagreements with Imran Khan, including his policies towards war criminal Vladimir Putin and the Chinese Communist Party. However, political opponents should be defeated in democratic elections, not jailed on fabricated charges,” he said.

The representative for South Carolina also went on to draw parallels between US President Donald Trump and Khan’s persecution. “President Donald Trump survived a corrupt judicial system… he [Donald Trump] knows the dangers of persecution. Pakistan should release Imran Khan to restore democracy. Free Imran Khan,” he added.

Acknowledging Pak-US bilateral relations over 70 years, Wilson further said the relationship between the two countries was strongest when the latter embraced democratic principles and rule of law.

He also went on to share a video of his speech on X (formerly Twitter) and wrote, “My speech in Congress today. Free Imran Khan.”

The viral video of his address comes hours after Wilson wrote a letter to President Asif Ali Zardari, PM Shehbaz Sharif and army chief General Asim Munir, urging them to the release the jailed ex-premier.

In a post on X, Wilson shared the letter with the caption, “Grateful to send this letter today to the political and military leaders of Pakistan to Free Imran Khan. I will also be engaging the Trump administration on this issue. US-Pakistan relations are strongest when Pakistan is democratic. Free Imran Khan.”

“I have many disagreements with Mr Khan, particularly his stance in support of the Chinese Communist Party and War Criminal Putin. However, democracy cannot work if political opponents are unjustly detained on politicised charges rather than defeated in the ballot box,” he wrote.

“I urge Pakistan to uphold democratic institutions, human rights, and the rule of law, and respect the fundamental guarantees of due process, freedom of press, freedom of assembly and freedom of speech of the people of Pakistan.”

Wilson stressed in the letter that Khan’s release would be a major step towards strengthening Pak-US relations.

Pakistan is yet to officially respond to the letter as well as the House address.

  • American lady finally returns to US

American lady finally returns to US

Onijah Andrew Robinson, the American woman who has been in Karachi ever since her Pakistani lover abandoned her after making false promises of marriage last year, has now returned to the US.

She reportedly landed in Karachi on October 11, 2024, while her visa was set to expire on November 10, but after her online paramour, 19-year-old Nidal Ahmed Memon, refused to marry her, instead of returning to the US, the 33-year-old chose to stay.

In January, she was taken into police custody after the Airport Security Force (ASF) stopped her as she tried to enter Karachi airport.

According to private media reports, Governor Sindh Kamran Tessori then intervened, and Onijah was issued a 15-day exit permit on January 27 while a welfare organisation booked an air ticket back home for her.

At the time of her return, however, she refused to leave and claimed she was being forced to return by the authorities.

She stayed at what she claimed to be her “friend’s house” in Karachi’s Garden area until she was provided shelter by a welfare organisation.

In February, she was taken to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC), Karachi, with concerns for her mental health.

According to media sources, incoherence in speech and swelling in her hands and feet caused concerns. Admitted to the  Department of Psychiatry, reports of her detailed examination are due.

Jeremiah Andrew Robinson, Onijah’s son, revealed in a video statement earlier this week that his mother is mentally unwell and experiences cognitive hindrances. He stated that her claims and actions must be perceived and dealt with accordingly.

He also claimed that Onijah was supposed to return to the US two weeks after she arrived in Pakistan in October., and that he and his brother had bought a return ticket.

The 33-year-old US national’s criminal record shows that she was arrested in Charleston County in South Carolina in 2021, “ENTERING PREMISES AFTER WARNING”. It also revealed that a bail bond of $465 is possibly not paid.

On February 7, a medical board gave the green signal for her to travel, deeming her fit to go, after which the police escorted her to the airport. US Consulate staff also paid her a visit to the hospital, persuading her to go back to the US, and organised her flight.

While Onijah Robinson was in Pakistan, people around the world, especially in America, followed her story with zesty as her odyssey turned into a media storm. Foreign netizens shared how their perspective of Pakistanis changed upon witnessing the hospitality given to Onija and the patience people here showed towards her. Comparisons were drawn with the depiction of Pakistanis in Western media, which is often bleak and fearful.

  • Pat Cummins, wife welcome baby girl

Pat Cummins, wife welcome baby girl

Australian captain Pat Cummins and his wife, Becky, have welcomed their second child, a baby girl named Edi.

The couple shared the news on Instagram on Saturday, expressing their immense joy. Cummins had skipped Australia’s tour of Sri Lanka to be with his family for the birth.

Meanwhile, Australia is facing a growing injury crisis ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. Fast bowlers Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood have been ruled out of the Sri Lanka series after ankle and hip injuries, adding to the team’s woes after Mitchell Marsh’s withdrawal and Marcus Stoinis’ surprise retirement.

These setbacks leave Australia searching for four replacements, including two all-rounders, to maintain balance in the squad.

Cummins’ injury stems from the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, where he bowled the most overs and took 25 wickets. Hazlewood has been dealing with multiple injuries, including side and calf strains. Both pacers require a long rehabilitation period, casting doubt over their availability for the Indian Premier League (IPL) as well.

Australia’s final Champions Trophy squad will be announced after the second Test against Sri Lanka in Galle. Their next major international assignment will be the ICC World Test Championship final against South Africa at Lord’s in June.
