WATCH: Indian police seize PTI flags, balloons

A video of The Daily Hindustan news report has surfaced online, showing the police seizing Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) flags in Bhalessa, in the illegally Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK).

In the video, which has now gone viral, the reporter explains that the PTI flag was spotted in trees in IIOJK, sparking panic among police and security agencies about how the flags had come from Pakistan.

The video shows policemen holding a PTI flag with ‘NA-64’ and ‘PP-32’ written on it, which belongs to the Pakistan Gujrat constituency.

On Saturday, PTI organised protests across the country, marking one year since what it calls the rigged elections of February 8, 2024, dubbing it a ‘Black Day.’ Multiple videos have surfaced, showing PTI supporters and workers releasing flags and balloons from Gujrat into the air on Saturday.

“There is no need to panic; the flags and balloons are indeed from Pakistan. PTI marked February 8 as a Black Day… thousands of flags and balloons were released from Pakistan,” the reporter explained, adding that there was no cause for concern.

He went on to claim that the flags and balloons were found not only in Bhalessa but also in the Kishtwar sector between February 8 and February 9.

Some internet users were quick to react to the viral news report. A social media user took to X (formerly Twitter), writing, “As soon as PTI’s flags and balloons floated into India, the people there got worried. In the end, the police ‘arrested’ PTI’s balloons and flags.”

“The PTI flags that were released into the air with balloons yesterday couldn’t be caught by the Punjab police, but the Indian police have ‘arrested’ the PTI flags,” quipped another user.

“Black Day ke mauqe par, Pakistan ke district Gujrat se gubbaron ke saath PTI ke jhanday bandh kar uray gaye, jo India mein ja kar utar gaye. Indian police gubbaron ko pakar kar tasveeren aur videos bana rahi hai (On the occasion of Black Day, PTI flags were tied to balloons and released from Pakistan’s Gujrat district. These balloons floated into India, where the Indian police captured them and are now taking pictures and making videos,” a user added.

One user sarcastically addressed the people who hail from Gujarat, writing, “O Gujarat people, the balloons and flags you released have been captured by the Indian police!”

Mir Hamza says Babar Azam has this rare ability

Pakistani fast bowler Mir Hamza recently shared a funny story about Babar Azam on the comedy show Hasna Mana Hai on Geo.

The host, Tabish Hashmi, asked him, “If Babar Azam is batting and needs two runs to win, and you have played against him in PSL, what will you do?”

Mir Hamza replied, “Babar Azam is our best player. Let me tell you a story about him. When I was bowling to him in PSL, it felt like he was reading the ball. After I bowled, I saw Babar looking at me, watching which side of the ball I was shining.”

He added, “Babar played two or three deliveries calmly, and I felt like he was observing my bowling. So, the next time I went to bowl, I tried to hide the ball while shining it. But Babar smiled as if he already knew what I was doing.”

Mir Hamza said, “I think Babar Azam can predict the bowler’s next delivery before it is even bowled.”

As of now, Babar Azam has continuously failed to score big runs since 2023.

Indian stadium goes dark amid campaign against Qaddafi’s lighting

A day after Indian fans mocked Pakistan for the lighting at Gaddafi Stadium during the match between Pakistan and New Zealand, karma seemed to strike back.

On January 8, New Zealand’s Rachin Ravindra was hit by a ball on the eyebrows during a catch attempt. Following this, Indian fans began mocking the lighting at Gaddafi Stadium.

However, during the India versus England match at Barabati Stadium on Sunday, the stadium lights went off, leaving both players and spectators in shock.

Social media exploded with reactions, as Pakistanis were quick to remind Indian fans of their recent trolling of the stadium lights. Many called it poetic justice, while others couldn’t help but laugh at the irony of the situation.

Here is how social media is reacting to this:

Monkey caused nation-wide power outage, says Sri Lanka minister

A minister in Sri Lanka has blamed a nation-wide power outage in the island nation on a monkey that he said entered a main grid near Colombo.

“A monkey has come in contact with our grid transformer, causing an imbalance in the system,” Energy Minister Kumara Jayakody told members of the media on Sunday.

Electricity across the country disappeared around 11:00 am on Sunday, leaving most of its 22 million inhabitants without power for almost a full day.

While electricity is gradually being restored across the country, hospitals, clinics and water plants are being prioritised.

Sri Lanka went through multiple blackouts when it defaulted in 2022, leading to many relying on generators for their electric needs. While the country has greatly recovered from the tumultuous from the financial crisis, the power grid remains in a precarious position.

PCB shares update on Haris Rauf’s injury

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has shared the medical reports of fast bowler Haris Rauf, who got injured while bowling against New Zealand in the first match of the tri-series on Saturday.

According to the PCB, his injury is not serious, and he is expected to recover fully before the Champions Trophy 2025, which will start in Karachi on February 19.

The board confirmed that Haris will be available for the tournament. His MRI and X-ray reports show that he has a strain in the lower part of his chest.

As a precaution, he will not play in the match against South Africa on February 12 in Karachi.

Haris felt pain in his ribs while bowling against New Zealand and left the field without completing his over. Agha Salman finished the over for him.

The fast bowler is also part of Pakistan’s squad for the ICC Champions Trophy.

  • New Zealand crush Pakistan by 78 runs in tri-series opener

New Zealand crush Pakistan by 78 runs in tri-series opener

New Zealand outclassed hosts Pakistan by 78 runs in the first match of the tri-nation series at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Chasing a target of 331, Pakistan’s batting lineup collapsed, and the team was bundled out for 252 runs in the 48th over.

Earlier, New Zealand’s captain Mitchell Santner won the toss and opted to bat first. The visitors had a shaky start as Shaheen Afridi dismissed Will Young in the first over. Abrar Ahmed then sent Rachin Ravindra back to the pavilion with the team’s total at just 39.

However, skipper Kane Williamson and Daryl Mitchell steadied the innings with a solid partnership. Williamson, after scoring a responsible 58, was dismissed by Shaheen Afridi when the team’s total was 134. Soon after, Tom Latham departed without scoring.

Daryl Mitchell and Glenn Phillips then took charge, playing aggressive yet calculated cricket. Phillips stole the show with an unbeaten 106 off just 72 balls, guiding New Zealand to a commanding total of 330/6 in 50 overs. Mitchell also made a valuable contribution of 81 runs.

For Pakistan, Shaheen Afridi was the standout bowler, claiming three wickets. Abrar Ahmed took two wickets while Haris Rauf picked up one before leaving the field due to discomfort during his seventh over.

During the chase, Pakistan started aggressively, thanks to Fakhar Zaman. However, the top order failed to support him, with captain Babar Azam scoring just 10, Kamran Ghulam scoring 18, and Mohammad Rizwan departing for only three runs.

Fakhar played a valiant knock of 84 off 69 balls but fell at a crucial moment, leaving Pakistan in deep trouble. Agha Salman (40) and Tayyab Tahir (30) tried to fight back, but it wasn’t enough as the team was all out for 252. Haris Rauf, due to his injury, didn’t come out to bat.

For New Zealand, Matt Henry and Mitchell Santner shone with three wickets each whereas Michael Bracewell claimed two.

The second match of the tri-nation series will be played between New Zealand and South Africa on Monday.

  • ‘Shehbaz Speed’ helps steamroll economy out of quagmire

‘Shehbaz Speed’ helps steamroll economy out of quagmire

2024 witnessed Islamabad’s robust efforts to boost the economy out of the quagmire it found itself in. Prime Minister ‘Shehbaz Speed’ helped steamroll the economy by attempting to ensure that all indicators were moving in a positive direction.

The state, under Shehbaz Sharif, witnessed great success in turning the economy around as inflation rates plummeted to single digits, the Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) witnessed historic highs, and the trade deficit shrank to a more manageable level.

According to reports, inflation rates fell to their lowest level in approximately seven years. This marks a huge victory for the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP), which raised interest rates to an extortionate 22 percent to reduce inflationary pressures in the economy.

Inflation now sits comfortably in the single digits, with economic experts predicting that the inflation rate will remain fairly stable in the upcoming period. This is because inflation rates seem to be under control despite the SBP slashing interest rates by about 1000 basis points in the past few months.

As per reports, essential goods became more affordable under Shehbaz Sharif’s tenure as wheat and flour prices witnessed a noticeable decline. Earlier this month, data revealed that CPI inflation tanked to just 2.41 percent, representing the largest drop in approximately nine years.

However, the inflation situation is not as optimistic as it may seem at first glance. For instance, the price of other essential goods, such as potatoes and pulse grams, rose sharply by over 40 percent each in urban areas. The rise in the prices of the aforementioned goods was even more pronounced in rural areas lurking near 50 percent instead.

As such, inflation statistics must be taken with a grain of salt as the prices of some goods and services can witness increases too.

The business community has benefitted immensely from state policies to boost commercial activities. KSE-100, the benchmark index of PSX, saw an investment spike which led the index to cross the 109,000-point mark.

Reports reveal that investors poured large sums into the PSX, resulting in an additional eight billion rupees in market capitalisation. While Islamabad wanted to boost investor confidence, some of its policies ended up inadvertently causing a slump in the PSX. Shehbaz Sharif, along with Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, attempted to crack down on tax evaders while also eradicating the use of black money for commercial transactions.

This policy, undoubtedly designed with the best of intentions, caused a sharp decline in the PSX as it would have effectively barred certain individuals from partaking in trading activities.

Additionally, Commerce Minister Jam Kamal Khan’s tireless efforts to boost exports managed to boost export revenues to $30.64 billion. While Islamabad was unable to eradicate the trade-deficit entirely, the gap reduced by an impressive 12.3 percent.

Army, Rangers to be deployed for Champions Trophy security

The government has decided to deploy the Pakistan Army and Rangers to ensure security for the Champions Trophy 2025. The deployment process is set to begin in the coming days.

According to reports, the federal cabinet has approved a summary from the Ministry of Interior, allowing the deployment of the Pakistan Army under Article 245. The Ministry of Interior is expected to issue an official notification regarding this decision today.

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), along with the Punjab and Sindh governments, had requested additional security measures for the tournament. Teams participating in the ICC Champions Trophy are scheduled to start arriving in Pakistan from February 12.

To ensure foolproof security, the Ministry of Interior has issued directives to home departments.

The security plan for the Champions Trophy will be implemented in three layers: police at the first level, Rangers at the second, and the Pakistan Army at the third level.

The Champions Trophy is scheduled from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.
