    Islamabad withdraws minimum support prices for wheat

    Islamabad has decided to withdraw from the domestic wheat market system by eliminating the annual announcement of the minimum support price. As per the National Food Security and Research (NSFR) secretary, the government will not uphold its longstanding policies that offer minimum support prices to farmers for wheat.

    This decision to stop meddling in the national wheat market comes after Pakistan’s agreement with the International Monetary Fund (IMF). The NSFR secretary assured the committee that Pakistan has adequate wheat stocks and, thus, does not need to rely on imports for the current period.

    He also confirmed that no restrictions exist on intra-national transportation of wheat. As the wheat supply is seemingly exceeding its demand, Islamabad has decided to collaborate with private entities to provide farmers with storage facilities. According to reports, the government is also working closely with commercial banks to facilitate the process of farmers obtaining storage facilities.

    Previously, Islamabad intervened in the wheat market to stabilise domestic prices by keeping them below the price of imported wheat. This was especially beneficial for customers with low household incomes, as a large proportion of their income is usually spent on procuring adequate nutrition.

    Farmers also greatly benefitted from the policy as the existence of an MSP reduced price fluctuations while guaranteeing a fallback option for producers in the event that their yields did not attract buyers in the market.

    MNA Syed Tariq Hussain chaired the meeting of the National Assembly Standing Committee on National Food Security. He outlined the dangers of a potential wheat shortage in the coming year because of suboptimal rainfall levels and extreme heat.

    Reports reveal that while addressing the issue of subsidies for Gilgit-Baltistan, the NSFR secretary clarified that the government has not eliminated them and that Islamabad is in the process of digitising the system to enhance transparency.

    Considering ongoing challenges, the committee chairman instructed the ministry to draft a 20-year plan to tackle the impact of population growth and climate change on agriculture. The plan, which needs to be submitted to parliament for approval, aims to boost yields by investing in advanced techniques and research.

    Rice productivity reportedly remained the topic of discussion, among other things, as the ministry announced an 8-maund-per-acre increase in yields. Officials from the Pakistan Agricultural Research Council (PARC) reported that they have developed eight new rice varieties after their research activities.

    The new rice varieties are capable of producing 90 to 100 maunds per acre and are of export quality. If farmers grow rice of the aforementioned varieties, exported yields could bring in much-needed foreign reserves for the cash-strapped country.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan’s lawyer Faisal Chaudhry was on Friday arrested from outside Adiala Jail, former PTI leader and ex-federal minister Fawad Chaudhry revealed in a social media post.

    “Faisal Chaudhry has been arrested outside Adiala Jail. This arrest is an insult to lawyers [sic],” Fawad wrote in a post announcing his brother’s arrest.

    It merits a mention that the arrest comes a day after a viral video showed Faisal hurling abuses at an Adiala Jail official. The outburst allegedly stemmed from authorities denying him access to incarcerated Khan.

    While reports quoted authorities as confirming the arrest, the reason behind it had not officially been revealed by the time of filing of this report.

    The Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) has also issued a press release expressing concern over the arrest. “The jail administration prevented him from appearing in proceedings without legal justification. PBC considers it one of the barriers to providing justice and condemns and demands that such acts not be repeated in the future. Lawyers should be allowed to attend court proceedings and perform their professional duties freely and without any hindrance.”

    The PBC also expressed its “great concern regarding raids on the residences of lawyers and their arrests by the Punjab Police”. 

    Meanwhile, journalist Ali Tanoli took to X to quote Faisal. “Faisal Chaudhry, lawyer of Imran Khan, speaking outside Adiala Jail: Those who released the video, my fault is that I express Imran Khan’s statements outside. What happened to me yesterday happened at the inner gate; today there has been a notice about it [sic].”

    Self-exiled former lawmaker Moonis Elahi also condemned the arrest of Khan’s lawyer, alleging that he was arrested because “he conveyed details of Imran Khan’s letter”.

    It merits a mention that in October 2024, Faisal was kicked out of Khan’s legal team after his brother Fawad lashed out at PTI’s incumbent leadership. PTI’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja had removed Faisal from the PTI’s legal committee as well.

    However, former Prime Minister Imran Khan personally intervened to resolve tensions between Barrister Raja and Faisal during the proceedings and directed the Chaudhry to rejoin the PTI legal team.

    Faisal had earlier this week made headlines for revealing details of an alleged letter from the incarcerated PTI founder to the army chief.

    On the other hand, PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi has addressed concerns regarding changes in the national squad for the Champions Trophy 2025.

    During a visit to Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, Mohsin Naqvi said, “The selection committee is currently reviewing the squad. They have the right to make adjustments if needed. Faheem Ashraf and Khushdil Shah were included in good faith.”

    Speaking about infrastructure development, the PCB chairman announced, “The renovation of the new five-star hotel at Gaddafi Stadium will be completed within a year. We also plan to redesign the National Cricket Academy (NCA). After the Champions Trophy, we will demolish and rebuild the NCA to modernise its facilities.”

    He also mentioned, “The NCA training ground will be expanded, and VIP boxes in the stadium will be rented out for six years. Each box will be priced at PKR 100 million, with some available for rent on a series-to-series basis.”

    Naqvi also said, “A deal has been finalised with the ICC regarding match passes. Visa issues for Dubai have been resolved. Anyone holding a match ticket or pass will be eligible for a visa.”

    The official ICC opening ceremony of the Champions Trophy will be held on February 16. The ICC has invited representatives from various countries to the event.

    The Champions Trophy is scheduled from February 19 to March 9 in Pakistan and the UAE.

    Indian fashion influencer Sufi Motiwala, known for his commentary on celebrity outfits, recently sparked controversy with his critique of Pakistani actor Mawra’s wedding look shortly after she tied the knot with actor Ameer Gilani.

    In a video, he called the fabric of Mawra’s lehenga “tacky” and “questionable.” 

    He stated, “This is what happens when you live in a world without Sabyasachi and Manish Malhotra. The fabric choice is tacky.” His comments quickly caught the attention of fashion enthusiasts and industry insiders.

    Pakistani stylist Zahra Sarfraz did not hold back in responding, calling Sufi “tacky” for his limited appreciation of fashion.

    “What I find truly tacky is living outside the world of originality, sticking to two to three designers, making yourself feel better with that one label,” she remarked in her counter-video.

    She also took the opportunity to educate the Indian influencer and his followers on the sentimental value behind Mawra’s wedding attire. She explained that the Sanam Teri Kasam actor had built her entire bridal look around her mother-in-law’s dupatta. 

    “Sufi, what I don’t understand is we extend so much respect, love, and support your way. Why is it so difficult to extend the same respect towards us? You can’t comprehend the world of sentimental value… It is so beautiful that Mawra took her mother-in-law’s shaadi ka dupatta and built the entire outfit around it. I guess that’s something you can do when you have a personality,” she added.

    Zahra further elaborated on the historical and emotional significance of Mawra’s bridal accessories. “Humare logo ki ek or interesting baat batati hun, hume chhote set mein bhi exactly usi tarah sans aati hai jiss tarah bade set mein aati hai (I’ll tell you another interesting fact about us: we can breathe the same way in a small jewelry set as we do in a large one.). 

    “For those who don’t know, this set was owned by Mawra’s dadi saas (husband’s paternal grandmother), and she wore this and celebrated it in the most beautiful way possible,” Zahra explained.
