Indian high court bans children from theatres

The Telangana High Court in India has recently imposed new restrictions on cinema screenings in the state.

The court has banned children under the age of 16 from attending film screenings before 11 AM and after 11 PM, following a tragic incident during the screening of Pushpa 2: The Rule.

The unfortunate incident took place at Sandhya theatre on December 4, 2024, when a stampede resulted in the death of a woman.

The tragedy led the court to take immediate action, directing both the state government and cinema management to enforce the new rules.

Prior to this, the state government had already prohibited shows between 1 AM and 8 AM, however, with the latest ruling, stricter regulations are now in place for special screening, with a clear focus on ensuring children’s safety during cinema visits.

The court also expressed strong disapproval over the state government’s approval of extra shows and higher ticket prices, emphasizing the need for responsible management in cinemas.

  • Tim Walz Criticizes Trump’s Funding Freeze as Stupid, Buffoonish, Childish

Tim Walz Criticizes Trump’s Funding Freeze as Stupid, Buffoonish, Childish

Gov. Tim Walz spoke at a press conference this Tuesday afternoon on Trump’s freeze of federal funding. He labeled it as “unforeseen” and “illegal.”

The budget office at the White House issued a memo at 4 PM on Tuesday that put forth a freeze on federal aid that would include assistance to nonprofit organizations, educational institutions, state and local governments’ grants, and loans to small businesses. According to the New York Times, the White House commented that over 3 trillion dollars were spent on federal aid programs in 2024. Therefore, a freeze at this level will surely have dire consequences.

“He got the whole country into a crisis all the while he was off to play golf. This is not a sign of leadership. To put it mildly, it is startling. It’s foolish and childish,” stated Tim Walz at a conference held at St. Paul YMCA on Tuesday.

The Minnesota governor’s office pointed out that if the spending freeze stays in place, an amount of around $1.8 billion will be at risk. The Commissioner for Minnesota Management Budget stated that the freeze has affected thousands of state employees and created noticeable uncertainty regarding the state of about 1,000 programs.

According to Campbell, Medicaid accounts for the largest portion of the $1.8 billion monthly, with the remaining $850 million going to programs like SNAP, MinnesotaCare, state highways, local airports, Section 8 housing, school meals and special education, heating assistance, and county family services for child support. She stated that the state of Minnesota has a “very limited” capacity to fill the void that the freeze would create.

A White House memo said there would be no freezes on Medicare or Social Security but stated that the web portals were down on Tuesday. It caused some trouble in Minnesota becoming troubled because it was going to submit a nearly $400 million reimbursement, Campbell stated.

Minnesota pays more into the federal government than it receives, Tim Walz said. “Those are our dollars that he is stealing,” he added. “The money is appropriated by Congress, as I and Attorney General Ellison did. This is so far beyond the pale to try to pull these dollars back.”

Given that the Trump administration’s spending freeze was scheduled to go into effect that day, a federal judge granted a stay late Tuesday to allow for additional litigation until Monday at 5 p.m.

Three big names likely to be ruled out of Champions Trophy squad

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is expected to announce the squad for the Champions Trophy and a upcoming tri-nation series soon. Reports suggest that three key players might be left out of the team.

According to reports, Saim Ayub, Abdullah Shafique, and Usman Khan are also unlikely to be part of the final squad. The squad selected for the tri-series will also represent Pakistan in the Champions Trophy.

The national selection committee is awaiting the medical reports of opener Saim Ayub, currently undergoing treatment in London, to announce the squad, but sources say that there is a strong possibility that Saim will not be able to play in the Champions Trophy.

The ICC Champions Trophy is set to begin on February 19 in Pakistan. Defending champions Pakistan will play their opening match on the same day at Karachi’s National Stadium.

Before this major event, Pakistan will also participate in a tri-nation ODI series with New Zealand and South Africa, starting on February 8. The tournament will be played in a single-league format.

Unlike other teams, PCB has not yet announced its 15-member squad for the Champions Trophy.

The selection committee had already prepared a 15-member squad list last week for both the Champions Trophy and the tri-series. This squad will be presented to PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi for final approval. Once approved, the squad will be officially announced.

Earlier, PCB had submitted a list of 20 players to the ICC, which included Saim Ayub’s name. However, only 15 players will be selected for the final squad.

    Possible 15-Member Squad

The final squad is expected to be chosen from these players:

    Mohammad Rizwan (Captain)
    Salman Ali Agha (Vice-Captain)
    Babar Azam
    Tayyab Tahir
    Irfan Khan Niazi
    Sufiyan Muqeem

    Haris Rauf
    Abrar Ahmed
    Kamran Ghulam
    Imam-ul-Haq
    Fakhar Zaman

As per ICC regulations, all teams must announce their final squad by midnight on February 11. After this deadline, any changes in the squad will require approval from the ICC Technical Committee.

PCB has until February 11 to finalize the squad. Any modifications after this date will need special permission from the International Cricket Council (ICC).

  • Islamabad pushes industrial power relief as Discos seek 400 percent security-deposit hike

Islamabad pushes industrial power relief as Discos seek 400 percent security-deposit hike

State-owned power distribution companies (Discos) have asked for substantial security deposit increases, which they want to raise by more than 400 percent for all consumers. As per reports, however, Islamabad is pushing for low industrial power rates and to ‘rationalise’ the tax burden on the salaried class.

Power companies have petitioned the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) to raise security deposits substantially for customers in lower consumption categories. The proposed changes would base deposit amounts on asset values because electricity rates have risen by a staggering 300 percent since 2008.

The proposed per-kilowatt deposit increase from 1220 rupees to 5179 rupees would significantly raise upfront costs for consumers who need new connections, reconnections, or wish to change their tariff category.

During a Pakistan Business Council (PBC) event, Power Minister Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari revealed that multiple power projects had been launched without following the least-cost principle. According to reports, the government intend to tackle this issue by halting the purchase of electricity from new power plants starting in April while also hosting auctions to sell excess capacity.

The power ministry proposed industrial users pay electricity rates based on marginal costs and additional discounts for Greenfield projects, including data centres and IT businesses. The transition to a competitive electricity market will start in April and should fully implement itself within two to three years.

In order to combat the growing circular debt, Awais Leghari said that the government would conduct a review of tariffs surrounding nuclear power and hydropower facilities. According to him, industrial tariffs have declined by 11 rupees already, and more reductions could follow if Pakistan successfully negotiates better terms for the energy debt held by China.

The minister states that establishing a single national electricity rate is impossible because Pakistan needs to advance its privatisation efforts. Reports indicate that eight out of ten DISCOS will transition to private management during the following two to three years.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb, also present at the PBC event, declared that salaried people face extortionate taxes, which require immediate easing. Reports suggest that tax slab modifications face uncertainty because of Pakistan’s ongoing International Monetary Fund (IMF) program however, officials are working to simplify the tax filing system. He outlined how Islamabad aims to eliminate the need for tax consultants by developing simpler procedures for tax compliance.

Muhammad Aurangzeb expects that policy rates will continue to decrease because inflation is projecting a downward trend. Data shows that large businesses have obtained financing at rates below 11 percent while foreign exchange reserves now stand at $13 billion.

The current level of reserves provides three months of import protection, which is better than what analysts had predicted earlier based on old reserve amounts. He emphasised that these advancements create essential conditions for Pakistan’s credit rating improvement.

  • Trump’s ally shows willingness to invest billions of dollars in Pakistan

Trump’s ally shows willingness to invest billions of dollars in Pakistan

Billionaire investor and United States (US) President Donald Trump’s ally, Gentry Beach, has expressed a desire to invest billions of dollars in Pakistan.

Speaking to media persons in Islamabad, Beach, who is currently heading a high-level US business delegation in the country, said they wanted to invest billions of dollars in Pakistan’s natural resources, energy sector and real estate.

Beach said he was not an expert on Pakistan’s economic practices, but they were open to exploring all possible areas of investment in the country.

“Not much attention has so far been given to the oil and gas sector in Pakistan,” he said, adding that they were also willing to help Pakistan unlock its full potential in these sectors.

The billionaire investor said he wanted to introduce state-of-the-art technology in Pakistan, bringing the country’s development sector at par with the developed world, and expressed hope for every Pakistani to have his or her own house in the future.

Beach said President Trump was also a businessman and the current leadership of both Pakistan and America shared similar mindsets. However, he went on to clarify, that he had nothing to do with the economic diplomacy of the government. “I am here not for negotiations but for business.”

He said that it was time for the US to move past the mistakes made by former president Joe Biden’s administration over the past four years, adding that he saw Pakistan as an ally of the US.

To a question about Presidential Envoy for Special Missions Richard Grenell’s interest in Pakistani politics and support for jailed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan, Beach said he believed the president’s aide was misled by deepfake technology.

He added that Grenell had made the statements according to his understanding of Pakistan.

It merits a mention that the business delegation’s two-day visit to Pakistan holds particular significance for Pakistan, marking the first of its kind since the Trump administration took charge.

Reports said the visit would pave way for new investment opportunities, economic cooperation and stronger bilateral ties between the two countries. Several investment agreements between Pakistan and the US have reportedly been signed during the visit.

Beach’s visit is also seen as a key diplomatic achievement for Pakistan, given his close association with the Trump family and the role he played in President Trump’s previous election campaigns.

The visit, reports said, underscores the strengthening of economic and political relations between the two countries in the early days of a new American government.

  • ‘Barrister Gohar meets top army officials, again’

‘Barrister Gohar meets top army officials, again’

Prominent journalist Mansoor Ali Khan revealed on Tuesday that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan once again held a meeting with army officials between January 21 and 22.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Mansoor, while revealing details of the meeting, stated that PTI demanded the release of the incarcerated Imran Khan, urging the establishment not to try him in military courts.

Without naming names, he said, “A federal minister was also present in the meeting along with an intelligence officer. However, Chief of Army Staff General Syed Asim Munir was not there this time.”

Earlier, political analyst Muneeb Farooq, while speaking to a private media outlet, had claimed that a meeting was held between the army chief, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Chief Minister (CM) Ali Amin Gandapur, Barrister Gohar Khan, and other provincial political leaders in Peshawar.

Initially, the PTI Chairman had denied meeting the army chief. However, taking a U-turn in his statement, Gohar, while speaking to the media in the Adiala Jail courtroom on January 16, confirmed that, indeed, he had held a meeting with COAS.

Explaining what had transpired during their rare talk with the COAS, the PTI chairman said that all matters and demands of the party were presented directly to General Asim Munir.

Barrister Gohar had said, “Ali Amin Gandapur and I held a meeting with the COAS, during which we outlined all of PTI’s concerns and priorities.” Imran Khan had also confirmed the development to reporters by saying that Gohar had met the army chief in Peshawar.

According to Mansoor Ali Khan, PTI leaders tried to discuss the role of the Chief Secretary of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) in the province. However, the meeting attendees refused to discuss it.

“During the gathering, the discussion about the Public Accounts Committee also took place,” he said while referring to the recent unopposed appointment of Junaid Akbar as PAC chairman.

As per the journalist, Gohar, along with the army officials, expressed a wish to hold another meeting in the last week of January or the first week of February, which both sides agreed upon. However, no time frame for the next meeting was announced, Mansoor said.

Terming the meeting cordial, Mansoor stated that the meeting attendees did not behave aggressively, and there was no row during the gathering.
