Challenges and recovery in Pakistan’s key sectors: State of economy report

Islamabad has revealed that two of Pakistan’s three major economic sectors contracted, with the industrial and agricultural sectors showing lower growth rates compared to targetted levels.

The Ministry of Finance (MOF) released its biannual State of Economy Report, which associated the slow growth rates in agriculture with the decline of cotton, maize, sugarcane and rice yields. Data from the report revealed that growth in important crops shrank by upwards of 11 percent during the first quarter of the year.

Cotton production dropped by almost 30 percent, while Maize yields recorded a decline of about 16 percent. Rice and Sugarcane yields declined marginally, posting a drop of 1.2 percent and 2.2 percent, respectively.

Furthermore, according to the report, the slowdown could be a result of the high ‘base-effect’ in the sector because of the last fiscal year. For reference, the base effect is a statistical phenomenon where growth in the current period seems to be subpar because of the exceptional growth rate a sector experienced in the previous period.

While the report highlights the negative growth rate in Pakistan’s industrial sector, it also downplays the severity by mentioning that the rate of contraction declined from 4.43 percent in the previous year to a little over one percent.

The ‘gradual improvement’ stated in the report is a result of moderation across sectors such as the agricultural sector.

According to reports, the government commented on how well Pakistan is positioned to post higher growth rates in the current year because of a multitude of reasons. These reasons stem from Islamabad’s efforts to consolidate fiscally while stringently following the targets set by the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Furthermore, the State Bank of Pakistan’s (SBP) implementation of an expansionary monetary policy might boost growth rates to respectable levels. The SBP has been able to cut its policy rate by a staggering 1,000 points as it has successfully controlled the rate of inflation in the economy.

As per reports, global commodity prices have declined steadily allowing for Pakistan’s exchange rate to stabilise. Analysts are citing these factors as reasons for anticipating a possible growth surge in Pakistan.

Moreover, the report highlighted that the existence of a ‘more favorable environment’ for both consumer and industrial sectors is going to help fast-track economic growth.

Amid the plethora of negative news, Islamabad was able to find the silver lining in the statistics. Remittance inflows and foreign direct investment (FDI) helped keep the current account balanced. According to reports, businesses in energy and Finance have witnessed a 20 percent growth rate because of FDI.

Trump administration suspends aid to Pakistan, others

At least 28 assistance programmes have been affected as the Donald Trump administration in the United States (US) has suspended aid to Pakistan among other countries for 90 days.

According to reports, the move follows a “stop-work” order by the US State Department for all existing foreign assistance.

“It is the policy of the United States that no further United States foreign assistance shall be disbursed in a manner that is not fully aligned with the foreign policy of the President of the United States [sic],” read the order.

It, however, allowed an exemption for emergency food assistance and related expenses.

The pause in assistance has affected at least 11 governance programmes, four projects pertaining to the education sector and another four related to healthcare. Five energy projects, four related to economic growth and another five pertaining to agriculture have also been affected.

Funds related to democracy and human rights in Pakistan have also been temporarily halted as a result of the suspension.

The pause in aid risks cutting off billions of dollars of life-saving assistance as the US is the largest single donor of aid globally – disbursing a whopping $72 billion in assistance in 2023.

According to officials, the suspension is temporary and the future of these projects will be decided after reassessing all aid programmes.

The State Department has said that Secretary of State Marco Rubio has so far approved waivers for “foreign military financing for Israel and Egypt and administrative expenses, including salaries, necessary to administer foreign military financing”.

These include an annual military aid of $3.3 billion to Israel and about $1.3 billion to Egypt.

  • Chinese AI app DeepSeek shakes up US tech market

Chinese AI app DeepSeek shakes up US tech market

DeepSeek, an AI-powered chatbot by a Chinese company, has become the most downloaded free app on Apple’s store in the US since its launch in January.

The app’s rapid rise in popularity and its lower development cost compared to US-based AI companies have caused uncertainty in financial markets.

    What is DeepSeek?

DeepSeek is a Chinese artificial intelligence company based in Hangzhou. Founded in July 2023, its popular chatbot app launched in the US on January 10, 2024.

The app functions like ChatGPT, answering user questions and assisting with various tasks. Users have praised it for adding personality to writing, though it avoids politically sensitive topics, such as the Tiananmen Square incident.

The company was founded by Liang Wenfeng, a 40-year-old engineering graduate who previously launched a hedge fund. He built DeepSeek using a stockpile of Nvidia A100 chips paired with cheaper alternatives, significantly reducing costs.

DeepSeek claims its AI models rival top US models at a fraction of the cost. While US companies spend billions, DeepSeek’s app was reportedly developed for just $6 million.

Since its release, the free app has topped Apple’s download charts in the US, though some users have reported issues signing up.

DeepSeek’s success has caused concern for US companies like Nvidia, known for producing high-performance AI chips. On January 27, Nvidia’s stock dropped 17 per cent, losing nearly $600 billion in value—the biggest one-day loss for any company in US history.

DeepSeek’s use of cheaper chips challenges the belief that only expensive, advanced chips can drive AI progress, creating uncertainty about the future of the AI market.

  • Trump Announces Executive Order to Build ‘Iron Dome’ for the US

Trump Announces Executive Order to Build ‘Iron Dome’ for the US

Donald Trump’s latest strategies also focus on military diversity programs and transgender service personnel. He announced these executive orders in Florida. The US president said he would issue an executive order to build a missile defense system known as the “Iron Dome.”

Additionally, when Trump spoke at the Republican congressmen’s retreat at the Trump National Doral Miami Golf resort in South Florida, he committed. Trump stated that he would undertake steps to increase executive military personnel at the end of the day.

“Powerful is the word I wish to repeat three times,” Trump stated while standing on the podium. “We have to have a powerful, powerful, powerful defense. And in a little while, I will sign four new executive orders.”

The first was to upgrade the Iron Dome missile defense system to protect Americans, which has already been initiated.

He specified the other two orders would further enhance the United States armed forces by removing all diversity, equity, and inclusion policies alongside “transgender ideology” from the military.

He further explained that another order poorly termed would be released. It would guarantee the reinstatement of service personnel discharged for failing to comply with the mandates set in place for the COVID-19 pandemic. Approximately 8 thousand armed forces members had been discharged for this reason from August 2021 to January 2023.

Why Trump Wants an ‘Iron Dome’ Defense

President Trump has shown interest in installing a system of defense such as the ‘Iron Dome’ that Israel’s missile interception system offers to the United States. The purpose of this system is to protect the civilian population in Israel from rocket attacks. Likewise, he believes technology of such magnitude is vital for the US to ensure the safety of its cities, military bases, and other important infrastructure from possible missile attacks. This need has inevitably arisen with the advancement of relations with unfriendly countries and different actors that do not possess a state.

Trump’s recommendation shows his narrower stance of putting more power into the USA’s national security and protection from other threats in the future. He thinks that by seizing a system of defense like the one the Israelis have, the US would be able to increase its chances of stopping missiles that are incoming with more efficiency. This vision includes raising the security of the nation and cutting down on the use of traditional military force in other regions. Moreover, its vision is also to provide a faster, more proactive solution to the growing problem of missile defense.

He wrote, “Dear chess friends, I want to explain the situation that happened in the game with Vaishali. With all due respect to women and Indian chess players, I want to inform everyone that I do not touch other women for religious reasons.   I respect Vaishali and her brother as the strongest chess players in India.
