Govt, PTI break ice as much-awaited negotiations begin

Aimed at easing the ongoing political tensions, much-awaited talks between the government and opposition’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) began Monday, a government representative confirmed to The Current.

According to the official, a high-level committee comprising senior members of the coalition government was formed by Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif, days after PTI founder Imran Khan also formed a committee reflecting the party’s realisation that its policy of confrontation could no longer be continued.

The government committee included Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar, Dr Khalid Maqbool Siddiqui, Abdul Aleem Khan and Chaudhry Salik Hussain, reports said.

While the PTI is yet to call off its currently postponed civil disobedience movement, government continues to say that any negotiations won’t bear fruit if they take place under pressure.

The PTI’s committee for talks comprises Leader of Opposition in the National Assembly Omar Ayub, former NA speaker Asad Qaiser, PTI General Secretary Salman Akram Raja, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister Ali Amin Khan Gandapur, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, senior PTI leader Hamid Khan and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Allama Raja Nasir Abbas.

PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, whose party has been agitating for several months now, called the committee’s formation a constructive step and said that meaningful dialogue based on positive intentions should be held.

The meeting, presided over by National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq, was attended by Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar, PM’s Adviser Rana Sanaullah, Senator Irfan Siddiqui, PPP leaders Raja Pervaiz Ashraf, Naveed Qamar and MQM-P’s Farooq Sattar.

PTI, on the other hand, was represented by former NA Speaker Asad Qaiser, Sunni Ittehad Council Chairman Sahibzada Hamid Raza, and Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen Allama Raja Nasir Abbas, in today’s session.

Omar Ayub, Salman Akram Raja and KP CM Ali Amin Khan Gandapur were among PTI leaders who couldn’t attend the meeting.

The gathering witnessed the recitation of the Holy Quran, followed by prayers for the betterment of the country and the success of dialogue before officially commencing the negotiation process, reports said.

Addressing the participants of the meeting, National Assembly Speaker Ayaz Sadiq welcomed the Prime Minister’s initiative to resolve issues through dialogue.

He assured attendees that his office would always remain open to them and that the Speaker’s Secretariat would provide all necessary support in this regard.

Emphasising that progress could only be achieved through negotiations, Sadiq urged the forum to move forward with an open heart to advance the dialogue process.

“I will strive to remain impartial and provide the required support,” he stated, adding that the success of the talks ultimately depended on the committees representing both the government and the opposition.

“We are working to ensure the success of these discussions and to bring political stability to the country,” Sadiq concluded.

While details of the meeting have not yet been released, the second round of talks has been scheduled for the first week of January.

Last week it was reported that significant progress had been made as the government, PTI and the establishment had all acknowledged the need for dialogue.

Nawaz, who had previously rejected the possibility of talks with the PTI along with his daughter and Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Maryam Nawaz, now showed willingness to negotiate with Khan, reports had quoted a senior PML-N leader as saying.

A high-level backchannel meeting, a separate report claimed, was also held between the government and the PTI.

It quoted sources as saying that the meeting was attended by two important players of the government, including a minister and another official, whereas the PTI was represented by a key party leader.

On the outcome of the meeting held last Wednesday, the report added, PTI would have to choose whether it wished to continue with the politics of agitation and confrontation or it really wanted reconciliation.

Similarly, reports said, the government and the establishment must recognise that the PTI remains a popular party, and it cannot be eliminated via continuous conflict.

Both sides will have to compromise, reports had quoted a member of the government as saying. “The PTI must recognise the government’s mandate and abandon its immediate demand for elections, while the government must step back from its efforts to exclude Khan from politics.”

  • Is a pro-PTI Pakistani behind Trump’s special envoy’s posts?

    Is a pro-PTI Pakistani behind Trump’s special envoy’s posts?

Posts by Richard Grenell, former acting director of national intelligence in the United States and a close associate of President-elect Donald Trump, have been circulating on social media in Pakistan. However, some Pakistanis now suspect that his account is fake and managed by a supporter of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI).

Dr. Shama Junejo, a political analyst, went down the rabbit hole to examine the account’s history. She claims that the timing of the posts and the type of English used suggest that the account is not run by Grenell, but rather by a pro-PTI Pakistani.

She points out that there were no tweets during Trump’s election campaign or after his win. The first tweet was made on November 9.

Grenell posted on X (formerly Twitter), “Free Imran Khan!” on November 26, when PTI protesters and law enforcement agencies clashed in Islamabad.

He garnered further attention on December 15 when he was appointed Envoy for Special Missions under the Trump administration. PTI’s official account shared the announcement. Some people in Pakistan, however, pointed to his sexuality as a means of undermining his credibility or making his stance appear irrelevant. This included coverage by national news channels, such as Geo News, which reported the update with the headline, “Trump appoints homosexual Richard Grenell as special envoy.”

Grenell, undeterred, posted again, saying, “I’ll say it again. Free Imran Khan.”

His tweets since then have descended, at times, into plain old trolling, behaviour that is seemingly unbecoming of a senior diplomat.

Social media is also confused by his sudden interest in Pakistan and tendency to act like he is pro-PTI. Many have raised eyebrows on how his interest in Pakistan is not being categorised as ‘foreign interference’ by PTI.

    Grenell’s Appointment

Grenell previously served as ambassador to Germany during Trump’s first administration, special presidential envoy for Serbia and Kosovo peace negotiations, and acting director of national intelligence.

National Public Radio (NPR) reported Grenell for having a reputation of “sometimes employing a contentious approach to diplomacy that rankled allies and the foreign policy establishment in Washington.”

PTI supporters rejoiced over his recent appointment on social media, congratulating him on his new title.

Social media did not hold back after Grenell’s recent post with one user commenting: “Respected Sir Heartiest Congratulations on your new assignment . May you get succeed and achieve your goals & aims Ameen. Imran Khan is our Leader and he is in Adyalla Jail for the last 18 months in fake frivolous cases like @realDonaldTrump. Thank you so much for raising voice for IK.”

PTI leader Azhar Mashwani, who is in self-imposed exile, commented: “@geonews_urdu is Pakistan’s largest traditional news network, fully allied to the brutal regime in the country. Interestingly, many of these traditional media outlets in the country were recipients of substantial USAID media-buying funds between 2008 and 2014 under the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Act. Even more interesting is that the KLB Act was the brainchild of then-Senator Joe Biden, who became Vice President shortly before the bill was passed. For those that think Biden (and his admin) were agnostic on Pakistan, there is ample evidence of his clear political preferences in the country. Past 3 years is a testament to it.”

Another PTI leader Zulfi Bukhari reposted with a caption: “250 million people chant the same. Free Imran Khan!”

Former President Arif Alvi wrote: “A very positive statement. The same feelings are resonating throughout the world. #Free_Imran_Khan. @ImranKhanPTI has spent more than 500 days in jail on false, fabricated & fictitious charges starting with the ignominious regime change, destruction of civil liberties, mandate reversal, fascist torture & subversion of constitution & judiciary by the deep state in Pakistan.”

Father shaved daughter’s head for wanting to marry of her own will

A young nurse in Karachi, wanting to marry off her own will, was rescued by police from confinement by her family, who had shaved her head as a punishment.

Police officials reported on Sunday that Naz Fatima, who works as a nurse at the Ojha campus of the Dow University of Health Sciences, had been forcefully confined to her father’s home.

Quaidabad SHO Farasat Shah said that after being informed, a police team raided the house, recovered the victim and arrested four suspects, including the patriarch of the house, Naz Fatima’s father.

The victim had informed the police that her paternal family beat her and shaved her head because they would not allow her to marry someone of her own choice.

The police informed the media that after being recovered, the victim later registered a case against her father Niaz Husain, uncle Kaleem Husain and others under sections 342 (wrongful confinement), 354 (assault or criminal force to woman with intent to outrage her modesty), 337-V (Arsh for hair), 337-A-I (punishment of shajjah) and 34 (common intention) of the Pakistan Penal Code.

Additionally, Naz stated in the FIR that her parents separated around seven months ago, after which she, along with her three sisters, began living with their mother in a rented house in Qadhafi Town.  Her father had been pestering her and her sisters to move in with him in Daud Chali, Quaidabad.

However, on December 12, her father beat her and her sisters, prompting them to temporarily seek refuge at her friend’s house in Green Town.

On December 20, Naz’s father, accompanied by her uncle and other relatives, stormed into her friend’s house in the afternoon, beat her, tore her clothes and shaved her head.

Then, they forcibly took her to his house in Quaidabad, where she was held in confinement until she managed to contact her lawyer.

Naz’s lawyer then reported her ordeal to the police, and she was subsequently recovered from wrongful confinement.

Further investigation into the case is underway.

  • Here’s what Babar called Saim Ayub after back-to-back 100s against South Africa

Here’s what Babar called Saim Ayub after back-to-back 100s against South Africa

Saim Ayub is all anyone can talk about after the role he played in securing Pakistan an extraordinary 3-0 victory over South Africa in the ODI series.

As fans shower praise at Saim for his display of batting masterclass, former national team captain Babar Azam has also called him a “cheetah” in a story on his Instagram.

“Cheetah” is often used to praise someone for being incredibly fast, agile and efficient in their actions. It is also informally, and commonly, used as a praise in Urdu and Punjabi languages.

Babar’s Instagram story comes after Pakistan swept South Africa in the three-match ODI series, and Saim, the young left-handed opener, played a major role in the same.

The former skipper, who himself returned to form in the ODI series and scored back-to-back half-centuries, could not help but praise the youngster’s batting for scoring two consecutive 100s.

Saim was named Player of the Match in the last ODI. He also received the Player of the Series award for his performance.

In a separate post, Babar also wished his friend and national team opener Imam Ul Haq on his birthday.

Pakistan has whitewashed South Africa in a three-match ODI series after defeating Protease by 36 runs in the third and last ODI of the series.

The match being played in Johannesburg was delayed due to rain. When the toss was held after the rain stopped, the South African captain won the toss and invited the visiting team to bat. After the match started, the game had to be stopped again due to rain and three overs were reduced.

Batting first, the national team scored 308 runs for nine wickets in the stipulated 47 overs, thanks to Saim Ayub’s brilliant century. Pakistan fell one run short due to the delayed start of the innings, and South Africa got a target of 308 runs.

Opener Saim Ayub played an innings of 101 runs; Saim Ayub scored a century in 91 balls, and his innings included 13 fours and two sixes.

Apart from them, captain Muhammad Rizwan scored 53, Babar Azam scored 52 runs, vice-captain Salman Agha scored 48, and Tayyab Tahir scored 28 runs.

For the host team, Rabada took three wickets, while Marco Jensen and Fortuion took two wickets each.

In response, South Africa could score 271 runs in 42 overs.

Tony de Zorzi scored 26,  Rassie Van Der Dussen 35, Aiden Markram 19, Heinrich Klassen 86, Marco Jansen 26 and Corbin Bosch scored 40 runs for South Africa.

Sufiyan Muqeem took four, while Naseem Shah and Shaheen Afridi took two wickets each for Pakistan.

  • PCB’s new ‘Strike Force’ to teach batters how to hit boundaries

PCB’s new ‘Strike Force’ to teach batters how to hit boundaries

Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Chairperson Mohsin Naqvi has directed the formation of a ‘Strike Force’ to improve the national team’s T20 performance.

As per the details, the Strike Force will consist of 100 young hard-hitting batters headed by former star all-rounder Abdul Razzaq, who will also head the selection of batters.

The decision has been taken while keeping in mind the 2026 T20 World Cup and the unsatisfactory performance of Pakistan’s batting lineup in T20Is over the past couple of years, reports said.

Talented players will be sought from across the country, and 100 youngsters will be selected in a year. The programme will last for six months, which means fifty batters will be sought every six months.

Fresh talent will be trained to hit hard sixes and fours, reports said, adding that the aim of the Strike Force is to provide new blood for the T20 squad with a strong lineup for the 2026 World Cup.

It merits a mention that earlier this year, Pakistan were eliminated from the first round of the World Cup.

Greenshirts’ poor performance had drawn strong reactions and criticism aimed at both the team and management. The same had led to significant changes in the team as well as the managing committees.

  • Superman teaser hits whopping 250 million views in a day

Superman teaser hits whopping 250 million views in a day

What happens when an iconic superhero returns with a fresh twist? Superman teaser has answered that question by shattering records.

As per the details, the teaser for the upcoming superhero film hit a whopping 250 million views within 24 hours of its release.

James Gunn, the film’s director, shared the news on social media, expressing his gratitude to fans.

“This milestone wouldn’t have been possible without your support,” he wrote.

Gunn also revealed that the teaser was shared in over a million social media posts, and called it “an exceptional achievement”.

Scheduled for release in July 2025, the news Superman film will feature David Corenswet stepping into the iconic role of Clark Kent.

Fans can expect exciting new elements in this version, including multiple supervillains to challenge Superman and a deeper exploration of his Kryptonian heritage.

The teaser begins with a gripping scene where an injured Superman is stranded on snowy mountains, only to be rescued by his loyal companion, Krypto the super dog.

The storyline is expected to explore Superman’s bond with his adopted family in Smallville while uncovering the legacy of his ancestors from the Kryptonian civilization.

Superman, originally introduced in comic books in the 1930s, has become a timeless superhero icon. Over the decades, the character has appeared in numerous TV shows and movies, captivating audiences worldwide with his heroic tales.

With this latest installment, fans are eagerly awaiting a fresh take on the Man of Steel’s adventures. Will this film redefine Superman’s legacy? Only time will tell, but the record-breaking teaser has already set high expectations.

Earlier, The DC Universe, alongside with its head James Gunn, have announced that the next actor to play Superman will be David Corenswet.

Surprised? Yes, for sure, but certainly not the internet, as since his debut on the big screen with Netflix’s ‘The Politician’, fans have been petitioning for him to become the next Superman. But for those who certainly are taken a back with a new face, here are some things you should know about our new Clark Kent.

Corenswet began his career as a side character in Ryan Murphy’s ‘The Politician’, starring Ben Platt, Gwyneth Paltrow and Zoey Deutch. He played the sensitive and intelligent jock River, who is rivals with Platt’s character Payton in competing for the class president position, and helps Payton overcome his perfectionism and anxiety.

He then went on to star in Murphy’s ‘Hollywood’, which is set in the post World War 2 era and explores the lives of a group of actors who are ready to do anything to make their dreams come true.

Many fans had been drawing comparisons between Corenswet and the former Superman Henry Cavill. Speaking to EW in 2019, Corenswet revealed that he had seen the fan casting on Twitter.

“I am officially not taking a position,” he said when asked if he thought there was a resemblance between him and the British actor. “I think that’s the way to go. But it has come to my attention. It actually came to my attention before the internet got a hold of me, and my sort of pie-in-the-sky ambition is definitely to play Superman.”

  • 46pc believe taxes not spent on public good: survey

46pc believe taxes not spent on public good: survey

A global poll conducted by AccaGlobal to survey if citizens agree that taxes are paid in exchange for services, has displayed shocking results. As per the details, the poll suggested that just one-third of the population sees the social contract of taxation to be a deal that works in practice.

Taxes are levied on the general public to provide public goods that everyone can utilise. Popular examples of public goods financed by taxation are toll free roads, public hospitals and public schools.

Every individual has equal access to public goods and services, and cannot be excluded from utilising them. In line with this thinking, 52 percent of poll respondents felt that taxes were a contribution to the community rather than a cost.

Poll respondents believed that public goods and services were a necessity. However, 25 percent disagreed, stating that in their opinion, taxes were a cost and not a contribution to the community.

It is to be noted that only 33 percent of poll respondents believed that tax revenues collected in their country were actually used to provide public good while 46 percent outright refute this belief.

There are two possible reasons as to why respondents believe their tax funds are not spent on them. The first of these is the level of corruption within the country. This could indicate that taxpayer funds are being misused as government officials consider said funds to be a source that can be used to illegally enrich themselves.

The second reason concerns only the elite. This is because as wealth rises, it is unlikely that an individual would be a consumer of public goods and services. An example here could be a wealthy individual choosing to seek care at a private hospital as opposed to a local public hospital.

Since both of these segments of society do not expect the funds to be spent on them, they believe that their funds never actually serve them.

Poll respondents from Latin America displayed the most amount of pessimism regarding their tax funds being allocated to services they need. This makes sense as countries like Brazil and Argentina score abysmally low on the corruption index with scores as low as 36 out of 100 – the lower the score, the more rampant corruption is in the country.

The chief executive of AccaGlobal has highlighted how public trust in taxation systems is necessary for an economy to attain prosperity. These arguments can also be applied to Pakistan as higher transparency and lower corruption levels might boost tax levels, resulting in citizens believing that their funds are truly spent on them.

  • Indian cricket team refuses to talk to Australian media at MCG

Indian cricket team refuses to talk to Australian media at MCG

Players and officials of the Indian cricket team appear to be hesitating in interacting with local media during the tour of Australia.

During a practice session at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG), Australian media was not given the opportunity to ask questions, angering local journalists.

Only Indian journalists got to question Indian all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja in the media conversation.

On this issue, the Indian team official said, “The team’s bus was about to leave, that is why he could not take questions.”

On the other hand,  Australian journalists complained to the Indian official, saying, “If you do not take our questions in the future, then tell us in advance; if you do not take questions, there is no point in us coming here.”

Jadeja answered Indian journalists in Hindi (his native language), but when an Australian journalist asked him to answer their questions in English, he moved away.

However, two journalists covering the series, Abhishek Tripathi from Dainik Jagran and Subhayan Chakraborty from RevSportz, said the Australian media was overreacting. They explained that Jadeja couldn’t answer all the questions simply because there wasn’t enough time.

A few days ago, Virat Kohli also had a bitter exchange with a journalist at the airport.

Indian batting maestro Virat Kohli had a heated exchange with the Australian media upon his arrival in Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test. According to reports, Kohli confronted media personnel at the airport, believing that they were filming his family without permission. The former Indian captain made it clear that his family’s privacy must be respected, stating, “You just can’t film without asking me,” as per the report.

Channel 7 reporter Theo Doropoulos explained that the incident stemmed from a misunderstanding. Kohli reportedly became upset after spotting video cameras, assuming they were pointed toward his children. “It was upon seeing the waiting cameras that Kohli became a little heated over what is largely a misunderstanding when he thought the media was filming him with his children,” Doropoulos said.

The journalist and cameraperson later clarified to Kohli that they were not filming his family members. Kohli then shook hands with the Channel 7 cameraperson and walked away.
