Debt surges by 28 percent in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, sparking concerns

International lenders have grown worried over Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s rising debt levels as it surged by 28 percent in just a year. As per Dawn, the outstanding debt KP is liable to pay stands at a staggering 680 billion rupees.

While this might not seem alarming at first glance, financial experts are predicting a drop in the development potential of KP as risk indicators continue to worsen in the province. As it stands, the provincial government of KP has been alerted by international creditors regarding the potential solvency issues that the government might run into.

In a meeting with KP leadership, international lenders suggested a solution- austerity measures.

As per Dawn News, the reason KP finds itself in constant need to borrow funds is because of PTI leadership’s focus on political issues rather than the economy. The claim has some merit to it as constant rallies to Islamabad and protests cause members of the provincial assembly to leave Peshawar largely unattended. This has created a vacuum for guidance within the decision makers, especially regarding matters pertaining to the economy.

The rising debt burden comes at an inconvenient time as IMF expects budget surpluses of large magnitudes from both the provincial and federal government. The IMF condition in reference here requires all four provincial governments to generate a budget surplus of 1.127 trillion rupees.

However, with KP relying on debt to finance government expenditures, lawmakers in Islamabad are worrying that the third largest provincial economy within the country may not be able to record a sizable budget surplus to meet IMF requirements.

This is largely due to the fact that in the coming months, the burden of interest payments is expected to rise. For businesses across the province, this spells bad news as the government might try to levy additional taxes or try to expand the tax net in an attempt to meet IMF guidelines.

The sectors where KP might attempt to increase tax collection will most probably be agriculture, automobiles, services, property and stamps. The reasoning behind this is that provinces are allowed to collect taxes on activity from these sectors.

For the upcoming fiscal year 2024-25, KP has budgeted a staggering 67 billion rupees for debt payments. Of this total amount, over 40 percent will be purely to pay back interest on the principle amount.

The interest repayments reduce KP’s ability to fund public projects within the province as the government will cut back expenditure on projects to pay back interest instead. The loss of potential public development initiatives is alarming as the current unemployment rate in KP stands at an uneasy eight percent which may rise even further if the government starts shelving projects as part of the stipulated austerity measures of the IMF.

  • Germany: Five killed, over 200 wounded in Christmas market attack

Germany: Five killed, over 200 wounded in Christmas market attack

Germany reeled Saturday from the shock of a new deadly attack on a crowded Christmas market where Chancellor Olaf Scholz was to visit the scene of the carnage.

Police arrested a 50-year-old Saudi doctor at the scene after five people were killed and more than 200 injured when an SUV ploughed through the festive crowd in Magdeburg on Friday night.

Residents went to the Johanneskirche church, just opposite the market, on Saturday to lay candles in tribute to the victims.

Police said it was not possible to immediately say whether the attack was inspired by radical religious or political beliefs, or linked to psychological problems. The detained suspect has voiced anti-Islam views on social media.

The Saudi man, named by German media as Taleb A., was a psychiatric doctor who had lived in Germany since 2006 and held a permanent residence permit.

Media pointed to his social media posts in which he expressed views critical of Islam, sympathetic to the far right and even warned of the “dangers” of an Islamisation of Germany.

“The motives remain mysterious,” wrote Der Spiegel weekly about the latest vehicle-ramming attack to target a traditional German festival market.

The black BMW tore through the traditional market in the centre of Magdeburg, southwest of Berlin on Friday night.

    1734778960-I3ZD4SA8OH.jpg

Police said the vehicle drove “at least 400 metres across the Christmas market” leaving behind destruction, debris and broken glass on the city’s central town hall square.

The attack came almost eight years to the day after a Tunisian man drove a truck through a Berlin Christmas market, killing 13 people. It was the country’s most deadly Jihadist attack.

The sorrow and anger sparked by the latest attack, where one of those killed was a child, seemed set to inflame a heated debate on immigration and security as Germany heads for February 23 elections.

One woman told Die Welt daily: “I don’t know what world we’re living in, where someone would use such a peaceful event to spread terror.”

The leader of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel, which has focused on jihadist attacks in its campaign against immigrants, wrote on X: “When will this madness stop?”

President Frank-Walter Steinmeier wrote that “the anticipation of a peaceful Christmas was suddenly interrupted” but cautioned that “the background to the terrible deed has yet been clarified”.

“What happened today affects a lot of people. It affects us a lot,” Fael Kelion, a 27-year-old Cameroonian living in the city, told AFP.

“I think that since (the suspect) is a foreigner, the population will be unhappy, less welcoming,” he said.

Michael Raarig, 67, an engineer, expressed his sorrow at the site, telling AFP “I am sad, I am shocked. I never would have believed this could happen here in an East German provincial town.”

He added that he believed the attack “will play into the hands of the AfD” which has had its strongest support in the formerly communist eastern Germany.

    1734778935-RXM65EVLOF.avif

Scholz and Interior Minister Nancy Faeser will on Saturday visit the market, where well-wishers had already left flowers of condolences.

Several European governments expressed shock over the attack. The Saudi government highlighted its “solidarity with the German people and the families of the victims”, in a statement on social media platform X, and “affirmed its rejection of violence”.

Faeser had recently called for vigilance at Christmas markets, although she said that authorities had not received any specific threats.

Domestic security service the Office for the Protection of the Constitution had warned it considers Christmas markets an “ideologically suitable target for Islamist-motivated people”.

Germany has in recent tim seen a series of suspected Islamist knife and other violent attacks which have inflamed public opinion.

Three people were killed and eight wounded in a stabbing spree at a street festival in the western city of Solingen in August.

Police arrested a Syrian suspect over the attack that was claimed by IS.

In June, a policeman was killed in a knife attack in Mannheim. An Afghan national was detained.

The government this year imposed new border controls with European neighbours and pledged to step up deportations of rejected asylum-seekers.

Germany’s conservative opposition leader Friedrich Merz, who is ahead in pre-election opinion polls, has pledged in his campaign to show “zero tolerance” on crime and “stop illegal migration”.

Man arrested for stepping out naked in front of polio worker

A man has been arrested for harassing a polio worker in Surjani Town, Karachi after she complained that he appeared naked in front of her to sexually harass her.

The police report suggests that the polio worker had gone to the flat of the man in the afternoon of December 18 to administer the vaccine as part of her duty. The man then appeared naked in front of the polio worker, exposing himself to her.

The Surjani Town police registered a case on the complaint of the polio worker, after which the man, named Faiq, was arrested from KDA flats.

The female polio worker in the complaint pointed out, “I instantly left the place after the man came out naked in front of me and told the official in charge of my department about the incident.”

CCTV footage of the arrest emerged online in which police can be seen arresting the man as the woman polio worker identified.

Previously, a man from Surjani Yousuf Goth stripped naked in front of a passerby woman.
The public display of indecency was recorded on camera, where he could be seen enjoying himself while his friends cheered him on.

It was later posted online, garnering backlash and prompting the local police to arrest the man for making obscene gestures.

However, the police informed the media that no complaint was filed against the man from the woman’s side but the action was taken for public interest.

The man confessed to harassing the woman by exposing himself only as part of a challenge given to him by friends, but someone filmed it and posted it online.

Moreover, a polio team was also attacked in the slum areas of Korangi, Karachi. It resulted in two police officials and polio workers being injured.

The team included Saba, Rabia, and Dr Khalid, accompanied by policemen Taufiq, Jahangir, and a lady police constable, Aniza Naz.

The family living there argued with the team that they didn’t want their children to be administered the polio vaccine. As the polio team tried to convince them, the men and women in the house resorted to violence against them.

The family members used a shovel to attack the team and tore the police officers’ uniforms while slapping them and snatching their phones.

Upon receiving the information, a large contingent of police arrived at the scene and arrested the violent family members.

Notably, the federal government launched a four-day campaign this Monday that aimed to cover 143 districts across Pakistan, with over 400,000 polio workers going door-to-door, aiming to immunise more than 45 million children over the age of five against the Polio virus, which induces a life-long disability.

  • ‘Rioters convicted by military courts have pointed finger at Imran Khan’

‘Rioters convicted by military courts have pointed finger at Imran Khan’

Senior journalist and former information minister Murtaza Solangi has claimed that May 9 rioters convicted by military courts, have pointed the finger at Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan.

As many as 25 PTI activists involved in attacks on military installations on May 9, 2023, were convicted and sentenced, the Inter-Services Public Relations (ISPR) said in a statement issued Saturday.

“All evidence was present against the culprits who were sentenced today. Not only did they confessed to their crimes in front of the judge, but also confessed to being incited to commit those crimes, by different leaders of the PTI,” he wrote in a post on X.

The journalist went on to claim that among those leaders was Imran Khan as well.

Scores of PTI workers were arrested and more than 100 civilians are facing military trials for last year’s riots over the arrest of former prime minister and PTI founder Khan.

“Field General Court Martial have in [the] first phase promulgated the punishments to 25 accused,” the ISPR said in its statement issued hours before Solangi’s claims.

The statement from the military’s media wing came as the PTI maintains it had no role in attacks on state installations, including the ransacking of the General Headquarters (GHQ).

While the PTI also demands a judicial commission to probe last year’s events, Saturday’s statement added that the promulgation of the sentences of remaining accused was also being done and will be announced shortly as and when the due process is complete.

“All convicts retain the right to appeal and other legal recourses, as guaranteed by the law and the Constitution,” the ISPR said.

It added that the nation on May 9 witnessed tragic incidents of politically provoked violence and arson at multiple places, marking a dark chapter in the history of Pakistan.

Building on a sustained narrative of hate and lies, the ISPR said, politically orchestrated attacks were carried out on the installations of the armed forces, including the desecration of martyrs’ monuments.

“Many accused are also being tried in various Anti-Terrorism Courts and their cases are being pursued as per the law, however, justice would truly be fully served once the mastermind and planners of 9th May Tragedy are punished as per the Constitution and laws of the land,” the statement read.

“State of Pakistan will continue to vigoursly pursue dispensation of justice to ensure establishment of inviolable writ of the State, so as to uproot this evil of violence driven disruptive and destructive politics based on hate, divisiveness and baseless propaganda,” it concluded.

‘Squid Game’ creator Hwang Dong Hyuk plans to quit show

Filmmaker Hwang Dong Hyuk, who created the hit Netflix show ‘Squid Game,’ has fans worried after hinting that he might quit the show.

The first season of ‘Squid Game,’ with its nine episodes, streamed on Netflix in 2021 and quickly became a global sensation. It became the most-watched non-English TV series on Netflix, with over two billion hours viewed and 265 million total views.

Following the success of season 1, the show was renewed for two more seasons. The first of these new seasons is set to stream on December 26.

However, amid the excitement, Hwang Dong Hyuk revealed he is “exhausted and sick” of working on the show. He said he plans to take a long break after completing Season 3 and won’t take on any new projects for now.

“I’m so sick of my life making something, promoting something. So I’m not thinking about my next project right now. I’m just thinking about going to some remote island and having my own free time without any phone calls from Netflix,” Hyuk said.

In an earlier interview, Hwang Dong Hyuk surprised fans by revealing that he lost nine teeth due to stress while filming the first season of ‘Squid Game.’ He also mentioned that although the first season was a global success, he didn’t make much money from it. This led him to agree to develop the second season for better compensation.

  • Here’s why Jannat Mirza prefers TikTok over cinema

Here’s why Jannat Mirza prefers TikTok over cinema

Content creator and popular TikTok star Jannat Mirza has said that when it comes to choosing between movies or social media, she’s all in for TikTok.

Appearing as a guest on Girls Only podcast with Dananeer Mobeen, the TikToker opened up about her career and why she would always choose TikTok over the big screen.

“I think our generation doesn’t like to go to the cinema anymore. They prefer sitting at home, relaxing, and using their phones. They just scroll through TikTok instead. Right now, everyone is using TikTok because it’s an easy platform. You have your phone and you can watch whatever you want, whenever you want. So, I would prefer TikTok over cinema,” she explained.

To a question about how her journey started, Mirza said she didn’t have any interest in social media at first. “I actually wanted to become a police officer, just like my father. But by chance, I became a social media star.”

Reflecting on her early days on TikTok, she said that she started in 2017 when videos that told stories within 15 seconds were trending.

“I made many such video at the time, but now I find them pointless and don’t like to watch them,” the Tere Bajre Di Rakhi actress added.

Earler, Tiktok star Jannat Mirza appeared as a guest on ‘Ahmed Ali Butt’s podcast, Excuse Me’.

Host Ahmed Ali Butt asked her, “Syed Noor thought your followers would watch the film, but they didn’t. How do you feel about his statement, especially since you were part of his film?”

Jannat replied, “Well, I think the movie’s script was a little weak. Let me tell you, that movie was good; I did it with my parents’ permission; I’m not sure why he said that, and a successful film needs a modern script and story. Syed Noor is my uncle, and I respect him a lot. Also, I did the movie because I thought that I should try acting in films.”

“I thought they [the producers] were telling me a nice story, but it was actually something else. I didn’t do my homework because it was my first time, and the Canadian male lead also made his debut in this movie,” she explained, “I was let down after seeing it. I had no idea at the time that I should read the script before shooting a movie.”
