    Imran Khan appears in court via video link

    The Supreme Court (SC) has started proceedings in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments case as Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan appeared before the bench via video link to present his arguments, Geo reported today. 

    Earlier in the day, arrangements were completed at Adiala jail on the order of the SC for the appearance of the PTI founder via video link.

    The Adiala jail administration informed the former prime minister about his appearance via video link in today’s hearing. The staff of the SC and jail authorities tested the video link before Khan’s appearance.

    A day earlier, Khan’s lawyers, Khawaja Haris and Intezar Panjutha, met him shortly in Adiala jail after the top court’s order to the federal and Punjab governments to give video link facility to incarcerated politician.

    “The PTI founder can present his arguments in the upcoming hearing via video link if he wishes to do so […] arrangements should be made for the presentation of arguments via video link,” Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa had said Tuesday.

    Faisal Vawda demands ‘evidence’ of interference in judicial matters

    Independent Senator Faisal Vawda has criticised judges of the Islamabad High Court (IHC) for their letter accusing spy agencies of interfering in judicial matters, saying we should stop targeting institutions.

    “Stop targeting the institutions, enough is enough. If there is any interference by institutions, then provide evidence, and we will stand together [against it],” said the former Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf leader during a press conference. 

    Vawda’s remarks came after he filed an application to ask the IHC registrar about revealing the exchange of a letter between former IHC chief justice Athar Minallah and IHC’s Justice Babar Sattar regarding Justice Sattar’s green card.

    The senator wrote a letter, mentioning the social media campaigns against Justice Babar Sattar, accusing him of holding dual nationality and business interests in a private school in the country.

    “A press release was issued that said Justice Sattar is Pakistani, but I didn’t get a reply. CJP Qazi Faez Isa, under Article 19, ordered that every Pakistani can get an answer,” he said.

    The former PTI leader stated that judges should be transparent and away from accusations.

    Vawda stressed that the accusations made by the IHC judges kept mentioning the names of agencies repeatedly. “Give evidence, and we will stand beside you,” he added.

    Imran Khan gets bail in £190 million settlement case

    The Islamabad High Court (IHC) on Wednesday approved founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan’s bail plea in the £190 million National Crime Agency (NCA) settlement reference.

    A two-member bench, comprising IHC Chief Justice Aamer Farooq, Justice Tariq Mehmood Jahangiri, heard the petition and reserved the verdict a day earlier.

    The IHC said in its order today to release the former prime minister against surety bonds of Rs 1 million.

    The verbal orders were announced today in open court; however, the detailed verdict will be issued later.

    On the other hand, the PTI founder can’t be released until the suspension of his sentence in cipher and iddat cases.

    The former prime minister has been facing multiple charges, including corruption and terrorism, since being ousted via a no-confidence motion in April 2022.

    Court acquits Khan in two May 9 vandalism cases

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan was cleared of charges in two cases related to vandalism on May 9.

    Judicial Magistrate Sahib Bilal issued the acquittal order for the former prime minister.

    Both cases against Khan were filed at the Khanna police station in Islamabad.

    The Judicial Magistrate approved Khan’s acquittal plea due to insufficient evidence in the cases against him.

    The cases were registered against the PTI founder in 2022 for  long march and violation of Article 144.

    On Tuesday, the opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) signalled that it was ready to hold dialogues with trivial political parties albeit with some conditions – including taking back all cases against Imran Khan.

    The offer was made by a couple of PTI lawmakers in the National Assembly as members indulged in verbal skirmishes.

    “Invitations for talks have come from Rana Sanaullah, the political adviser to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif …. as well as President Asif Zardari. I want to put this before the house on behalf of PTI. When has Imran Khan refused to hold negotiations,” asked PTI’s Ali Muhammad Khan while taking part in the debate.

    “We believe that if Pakistan is to be put on the right track, then we [the politicians] will have to make decisions. We do not need any broker, dealer or individual who brings us to sit together,” he said, adding that when they would take their fight outside parliament, “then the Supreme Court will come into action, and Pindi [a reference to GHQ] and Aabpara [a reference to the ISI head office] and many other forces will come into action”, said Mr Khan, who served as the parliamentary affairs minister during the previous PTI government.

    He asked the speaker to take the initiative, stating that their first point was the release of Imran Khan and other “political prisoners” as well as the withdrawal of all “political cases”.

    The PTI MNA also mentioned the arrest of Nawaz Sharif by Gen Musharraf, saying they could not support such an action. He said Imran Khan was being punished like his predecessors when they tried to make independent decisions.

    Aleema Khan alarmed over Imran Khan’s safety in Adiala Jail

    Aleema Khan, sister of founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan, took to X (formerly Twitter) on May 15 to express concerns about the safety of her brother whilst he is incarcerated in Adiala Jail.

    Aleema Khan wrote, “Imran Khan informed us in jail: “I am concerned that they have suddenly changed my security guards at midnight.” When asked, he was told they that they had gone on leave for 2 months.”

    She also stated that a family meeting with Imran Khan was cancelled by jail authorities and the same thing happened with Shah Mehmood Qureshi’s family meeting on Monday.

    “This evening, we were informed that Al-Qadir case in jail court has also been cancelled. Quite simply, we are very concerned about his safety and well-being and can never rule out the threat to his life. There have already been several assassination attempts on him in the past few years,” she wrote on X.

    Social media reactions were mostly sympathetic to Khan’s post.

    Supreme Court allows Khan to attend hearings via video link

    The Supreme Court (SC) has allowed Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder chairman Imran Khan to attend hearings in the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) amendments case through a video link.

    On September 15, 2023, while considering a petition filed by Imran Khan, the apex court invalidated amendments made to NAB laws.

    A five-member bench headed by Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Justice Qazi Faez Isa, comprising Justice Amin-Ud-Din Khan, Justice Jamal Mandokhail, Justice Athar Minallah, and Justice Hassan Azhar, heard the government’s pleas challenging the NAB amendments verdict.

    The NAB prosecutor general said at the start of the hearing that the Bureau will support the government’s argument in this case.

    In response to this, Justice Athar Minallah said that Imran Khan wants to attend this case. “How can a respondent be barred from attending court proceedings?” he added.

    Justice Minallah further said, this is a matter of basic fundamental rights.

    ‘Who is behind transfer of judges’; Yasmin Rashid questions government

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) incarcerated leader Dr Yasmin Rashid asked the federal government on Tuesday who was repeatedly transferring the judges hearing her case and the cases of party workers.

    “If some innocent person is given bail, he is arrested again in a new case. This is not justice, this is political vengeance, and the PTI has been a victim of this for one year,” the imprisoned PTI leader said in a letter addressed to Chief Justice of Pakistan (CJP) Qazi Faez Isa.

    Dr Yasim said that one year had passed since the May 9 incident happened, and still, women PTI workers are in jail.

    The PTI leader questioned the “bogus government” as to why police did not show up with cases’ records and wondered where the prosecutor goes at the time of presenting arguments.

    She requested the CJP to make a judicial commission on May 9 as PTI workers have been waiting for justice for one year.

    Differences between Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) continue to increase as senior leaders Asad Qaiser and Shibli Faraz had a war of words over the expulsion of Sher Afzal Marwat from PTI’s committee, Geo News reported.

    During a meeting of the party’s political committee, Asad Qaiser remarked that Marwat’s ouster from PTI committees was an “injustice”.

    Shibli Faraz questioned Qaiser who is he to speak on party policy issues. To this, Qaiser said: “You have joined the party for a few years. I have been with Imran Khan since 1995.”

    “Who are you to talk to me like this? The way the political committee was used against Sher Afzal Marwat is an injustice,” Qaiser said after which the political committee members pressured Faraz to apologise.

    On May 9, PTI Secretary General Omar Ayub Khan said that Marwat has been expelled from the party’s core and political committees on Imran Khan’s instructions.

    He was expelled after Marwat had publicly criticised the PTI top leadership.

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to meet the International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission next week to talk about a new loan programme, ARY News reported on Monday. 

    Sources in ARY claimed that the prime minister is expected to talk about getting more money from lenders, and reassure the Fund about meeting targets in the new loan programme.

    They will discuss continuing stringent economic policies in the budget for the upcoming year.

    Pakistan is seeking a $6 to $8 billion bailout package from the international lender for three to four years to address its financial woes.
