Did ‘Laapata Ladies’ copy ‘Burqa City’? French director responds

The popular Indian film Laapata Ladies has found itself at the center of controversy, after a viral video claimed its storyline is remarkably similar to the 2019 Arabic short film Burqa City.

The debate gained momentum as the video compared scenes from both films, leading to widespread accusations of plagiarism on social media. The matter became even more sensitive after Laapata Ladies was selected as India’s official entry for the 2024 Oscar Awards.

French director Fabrice Bracq, who directed Burqa City, has now responded to the allegations in an interview with Indian media.

“When I read the story of the film, I was immediately shocked, and when I saw the full film, I was in a state of surprise and shock,” he said.

“Although the story has been adapted from an Indian perspective, many scenes, characters, and messages are similar to my short film.”

Fabrice pointed out specific elements that he believes are directly lifted from Burqa City, “The kind-hearted, simple-minded husband who loses his wife, the second husband who is cruel and abusive, the scene at the police station with a corrupt officer and his two colleagues, and the scene where shops are searched by showing a picture of a burqa-clad wife—these are exactly the scenes from Burqa City.”

He added that both films carry a central message related to women’s freedom and feminism.

“The main message of both films is based on women’s freedom and feminism,” he noted.
On the other hand, Laapata Ladies writer Biplab Goswami has firmly denied the plagiarism claims.
“The story is completely original. I registered its summary with the Screenwriters Association in 2014, which is five years before the release of Burqa City,” he said.

Directed by Kiran Rao, Laapata Ladies was released in 2024. The film tells the story of two brides who are mistakenly switched during a train journey.

  • Social media in meltdown as Feroze Khan reveals wife was his ‘therapist’

Social media in meltdown as Feroze Khan reveals wife was his ‘therapist’

Netizens are arguing over Feroze Khan’s approach towards “ethical boundaries” when it comes to the relationship between a patient and his or her therapist, since after the actor revealed that his second wife was his “shrink”.

As per the details, Khan was recently honoured with the prestigious Star of Pakistan award at the UK House of Lords for his contributions to the Pakistani cinema. The Khuda Aur Mohabbat star received the award from Baroness Paula Uddin, MP Rup Haq, Lord Kuldip Singh and entrepreneur Mansoor Shafique.

However, what was meant to be a celebratory moment turned into a hot topic of debate on social media, especially within Pakistan’s mental health community, as Khan, at the event, revealed that his wife used to be his therapist.

Speaking to reporters, he described his relationship journey with his wife, saying, “She’s the kindest soul. She came at a very rough time in my life… my wife was actually my shrink. I needed someone to talk to, and one day I just asked her out and told her I’d like to marry her.”

The candid confession raised serious concerns among mental health professionals, especially those trained in clinical psychology. Shortly after the clip went viral, content creator aeman.haroon shared a video questioning the ethical boundary allegedly crossed.

“Did he just say what I think he said? A psychologist is not allowed to get romantically involved with a client. In many countries, it’s illegal. At the very least, it’s unethical,” she explained, adding that such a relationship could lead to emotional manipulation and misuse of the therapist’s knowledge of a client’s vulnerabilities.

Another clinical psychologist and content creator, Amna Arshad, who runs the page your.desi.therapist, posted a detailed video titled “Why Psychologists and Clients Cannot Have Relationships Outside of Therapy”.

“When a person is sharing deep emotional wounds, addiction issues, fears of abandonment, and personal trauma, they are in an extremely vulnerable state. The therapist holds all the power in that dynamic. If that power turns into a romantic connection, it creates a dangerous imbalance,” she said in her video.

Amna emphasised that such situations could lead to emotional dependency, blurred boundaries and even therapists avoiding necessary confrontations for fear of upsetting the partner — ultimately harming the client’s healing process.

While Khan and his wife have not yet reacted to the debate, mental health professionals are calling for stricter regulations around therapeutic practice and licensing. This situation has opened up a wider conversation about the need for a national ethical board in Pakistan to govern clinical practices and prevent such scenarios in the future.

  • Fawad Khan’s Bollywood return sparks boycott calls amid political tensions

Fawad Khan’s Bollywood return sparks boycott calls amid political tensions

The return of Fawad Khan, Pakistan’s superstar, to Bollywood has sparked debate in India. The actor is set to star in the romantic comedy Abir Gulaal alongside Vaani Kapoor, scheduled for release on 9 May 2025. However, ahead of its debut, the film is facing fierce opposition from political figures and industry leaders, particularly in Maharashtra.

Veteran filmmaker Ashoke Pandit, also the President of the Indian Film and Television Directors’ Association (IFTDA), has voiced strong opposition to Fawad’s casting. He told IANS that the entire nation would react negatively to the return of the Pakistani actor. He expressed disappointment with the Indian film industry for continuing to work with Pakistani artists despite an unofficial ban following the 2016 Uri attack. Pandit questioned the notion of “art having no boundaries”, stating that there should be accountability when it comes to showing solidarity with the nation.

Pandit further added, “Which Pakistani artist has ever spoken out after an attack on Indian soldiers or civilians?” He warned that releasing the film could stir public anger and lead to mass protests.

The Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), led by Raj Thackeray, has also strongly opposed the film’s release in the state. They have vowed to block the movie, with a leader daring the filmmakers to release it. Similarly, Shiv Sena leader Sanjay Nirupam criticised the popularity of Pakistani artists, saying that Indian audiences avoid watching Pakistani films and actors despite their curiosity. He stated, “There is widespread hatred for Pakistan in India,” adding that Pakistani artists should work within their own film industry.

Fawad Khan, who has starred in Bollywood hits like Khoobsurat (2014), Kapoor & Sons (2016), and Ae Dil Hai Mushkil (2016), was absent from Indian cinema following political tensions after the Uri attack, which led to a ban on Pakistani artists. While a petition to formally ban Pakistani artists was dismissed by the Bombay High Court in 2023, the industry still follows an unwritten rule avoiding Pakistani talent.

As Abir Gulaal prepares for its release, the film finds itself at the centre of a political and cultural debate, raising questions about the intersection of art, politics, and national sentiment.

  • ACP Pradyuman to die in CID?

ACP Pradyuman to die in CID?

Actor Shivaji Satam’s iconic character ACP Pradyuman, has become synonymous with the legendary Indian crime show CID. However, due to the show’s consistently low TRPs and declining viewership, the makers have reportedly decided to take a major step — ending ACP Pradyuman’s journey in the series in an effort to revive audience interest.

“It’s true that Shivaji Satam’s character ACP Pradyuman is going to die. The makers have decided to take this step due to the low TRP. This decision has been made after much consideration and mutual agreement,” a source revealed to Indian media.

With Shivaji’s exit, it will be interesting to see how the story progresses and which new actor steps in to steer the show forward.

“A senior actor like him won’t be replaced but a new actor will be introduced with a different character to take the story ahead,” the source added. “The new actor will be on par with Shivaji Satam in terms of popularity and stature.”

According to earlier reports, filmmaker Tigmanshu Dhulia, who recently joined the show’s cast, will be involved in a dramatic twist that leads to ACP Pradyuman’s death. It is expected that his character will plant a bomb, marking the end of an era.

Shivaji Satam has portrayed ACP Pradyuman since CID first aired in 1998. The show took a break in 2018, citing creative reasons, and returned to screens in 2024. Earlier this year, it also began streaming on Netflix, introducing the series to a new generation of viewers.

On his return, Shivaji had shared his excitement:

“In this edition of the show, the Daya-Abhijeet bond, once unbreakable, has snapped and the two are standing opposite each other. The very foundation of CID is shaken, and ACP Pradyuman’s world will be turned upside down. It feels surreal to return as ACP Pradyuman after six years, a character that has received so much love — and we promise a thrilling ride filled with suspense and heart-stopping drama!”

If this really is the end for ACP Pradyuman, it marks a massive shift in the world of CID and for millions of fans, it’s truly the end of an era.
