A source revealed that: 

• The “Old Christchurch Road” branch in Bournemouth will close in January 2025. 

• In February 2025, the Basingstoke store in the Malls shopping centre will close. 

• And the Accrington branch will be closed in March 2025.

Carl Cowling, the CEO of the WHSmith store revealed while talking to BBC that now, the company are not interested in opening more branches on the UK high street. He further said that instead of opening branches on UK high streets, the company is focusing on opening stores in hospitals, railway stations, and airports. He also told to BBC, that there is no doubt about a good business in the UK High Street but we are not interested in increasing it any more. He said that opening more new stores on Hight Street just “would just be a duplication”

The company announced the opening of almost 110 new stores, and most of them are on railway stations and airports. The reason behind taking this step is that the company got profit behind the travel division is 10% while the income behind the high street has decreased 3%. The Cowling has said we invested more than 100 million pounds on airports. He added in the next 4 years our aim is to get 20% of the airport retail market.

A ceasefire in Gaza will begin Sunday morning at 06:30 GMT, mediator Qatar said on Saturday after Israel’s cabinet voted to approve the truce and hostage-prisoner release deal.

Qatar and the United States, which mediated the deal along with Egypt, had announced the agreement on Wednesday.

Israeli strikes on Gaza have continued since then. On Saturday, Gaza’s Civil Defence rescue agency said at least five members of a family died when a strike hit the tent where they were staying in Khan Yunis, southern Gaza.

Explosions were heard over Jerusalem Saturday morning after warning sirens blared and the military said a projectile had been launched from Yemen, whose Iran-backed rebels say they support the Palestinians.

“As coordinated by the parties to the agreement and the mediators, the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip will begin at 8:30 am on Sunday, January 19, local time in Gaza,” Qatar’s foreign ministry spokesman Majed al-Ansari said on X.

In more than 15 months of genocide by Israel, there has been only one previous truce, for one week, in November 2023. That deal also saw the release of hostages held by the militants in exchange for Palestinian prisoners.

“The government has approved the hostage return plan,” the office of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said early Saturday after the cabinet held its vote.

Netanyahu’s office said the deal “supports achieving the objectives of the war”.

Hamas, however, in a statement on Saturday, said Israel had “failed to achieve its aggressive goals” and “only succeeded in committing war crimes that disgrace the dignity of humanity.”

Israel’s justice ministry said 737 Palestinian prisoners and detainees will be freed as part of the deal’s first phase — none before 4:00 pm local time (1400 GMT) on Sunday.

Qatari Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdulrahman bin Jassim Al-Thani has said an initial 42-day ceasefire would see 33 hostages released by Gaza authorities.

The truce is to take effect on the eve of Donald Trump’s inauguration for a second term as United States president.

Palestinian President Mahmud Abbas said the Palestinian Authority, which has partial administrative control in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, has completed preparations “to assume full responsibility in Gaza” after the ceasefire.

Israel has expressed no definitive stance on post-ceasefire governance beyond rejecting any role for both Hamas and the Palestinian Authority.

Outgoing US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Gaza should be under PA control.

Even before the truce began, displaced Gazans were preparing to return home.

“I will go to kiss my land,” said Nasr al-Gharabli, who fled his home in Gaza City for a camp further south. “If I die on my land, it would be better than being here as a displaced person.”

In Jerusalem on Saturday, residents said the deal had been a long time coming.

“Hopefully a maximum amount of hostages will be coming back”, said Beeri Yemeni, a university student. “Maybe this is the beginning of (the) end of suffering for both sides, hopefully,” he said, adding that “the war needed to end like a long long time ago.”

Israel’s cabinet endorsement of the deal came despite eight ministers voting against it, including far-right ministers Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich.

Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack gave Israel an excuse to start the genocide that resulted in the destruction of Gaza, killing 46,899 people, most of them civilians, according to figures from Gaza’s health ministry. 

In Israel, the deaths of 1,210 people were reported.

Of the 251 people taken hostage after October 7, 94 are still in Gaza, including 34 the Israeli military says are dead.

Aid-starved

Mediators had worked for months to reach a deal but the efforts were fruitless until Trump’s inauguration neared.

Brett McGurk, the pointman for outgoing President Joe Biden, was joined in the region by Trump envoy Steve Witkoff in an unusual pairing to finalise the agreement, US officials said.

Israeli authorities assume the 33 captives to be released in the first phase are alive, but Hamas has yet to confirm that.

Also in the first phase, Israeli forces would withdraw from Gaza’s densely populated areas and allow displaced Palestinians to return “to their residences”, the Qatari prime minister said.

An Israeli military official said reception points had been established at Kerem Shalom, Erez and Reim, where hostages would be joined by doctors and mental health specialists before being “transported via helicopter or vehicle” to hospitals in Israel.

Israel “is then expected to release the first group of Palestinian prisoners, including several with high sentences”, a source said on condition of anonymity.

During talks on Friday, negotiators agreed to form a joint operations room in Cairo to “ensure effective coordination” and compliance with the truce terms, Egyptian state-linked media reported.

Biden said an as-of-yet unfinalised second phase of the agreement would bring a “permanent end to the war”.

In aid-starved Gaza, humanitarian workers caution a monumental task lies ahead.

On Friday, British lawmakers warned that Israeli legislation banning the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, threatens the truce deal. The ban on the main aid agency in Gaza is to take effect by the end of January.

Poisonous alcohol has killed 33 people in Istanbul, Turkey, while another 29 people have been admitted to Intensive Care wards. 

International media reports initially suggested that 11 people died of consuming poisonous alcohol but in the last four days, the number has surged to 33.

Methanol-laced alcohol can cause various diseases and prove fatal if consumed in excessive amounts. 

AFP reported that private alcohol production has increased since Turkish authorities increased taxes on alcohol, leading to a spike in the number of deaths. 

A total of 48 people died of drinking toxic alcohol in Turkey in 2024. 

The recent incident has sparked a debate on alcohol taxes in Turkey, a nominally secular country where alcohol taxes have risen sharply under President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, a pious Muslim who vociferously opposes drinking.

However, things remain dicey for most civilians of the two regions. A comprehensive shift in how both groups are treated is necessary. Otherwise, the violence will undoubtedly resurface.

The last agreement does not represent peace but rather an impermanent break in a conflict that dates back almost a century. The Palestinians are already suffering from systematic oppression, dehumanization, and violence in the shape of endless bombings. The recent ceasefire has only served to bring into more explicit focus the deep inequalities that exist for the under-attack people of Gaza and Palestine. However, it can be claimed that the situation is not as grim, for many see it as a temporary pause rather than an end.

Another extremely urgent issue requires addressing the multiyear genocide unfolding. While the word “genocide” is not used lightly in a variety of contexts, many scholars, human rights organizations, and advocates for the Palestinian people have repeatedly stressed the ongoing campaign to erase Palestinian identity and existence. This includes such activities as targeting numbers of civilian infrastructures, displacing Palestinian families, and perpetuating settlement within a territory that had already been taken.

Human rights groups documented a lot of abuses against Palestinians. Extradition killings, indiscriminate bombings, and systematic denial of essential rights make people incapable of getting things like potable water, access to health care, and education. Some people argue such actions amount to and constitute acts of genocide under international laws. It is a deliberate attempt to destroy in whole or in part a particular racial or religious group.

Palestinians continue to live under a system that treats them like second-class citizens. Such pressure should be exerted so that responsible actors for the genocide and apartheid of Palestine can restore peace not just for the sake of peace in the region but for humanity itself.

The law should be followed, especially in holding those accountable for crimes committed. This implies supporting Palestinian self-determination and autonomy and ensuring they will be at the table for any peace process. There must be constant pressure applied on Israel to end its illegal closure of Palestinian territories and dismantle apartheid constructs that keep Palestinians under oppressive rule.

There will be the release of both Israeli and Gazan prisoners as part of the agreement. Meanwhile, the bloodshed in Gaza will come to an end. Palestinians who have been displaced will finally be able to return to their homes, even if most of their homes still stand following the destruction campaign of Israel.

The First Phase of the Ceasefire Gaza Agreement

The first phase will start with a limited prisoner swap alongside the partial Israeli troop withdrawal and a massive increase in aid to the Gaza region. The Israeli army has stated that this phase will last for six weeks.

Let me give more context to what happened on October 7, 2023. The Hamas attack on southern Israel led to the capturing of 33 Israeli civilians, including women, children, and people above 50 years of age. As a result of an agreement to provide aid to 1000 civilians who were captured in October, Palestine was also forced to make some compromises to prevent an apparent defeat. The exchange would also be beneficial for other civilians. The greater exchange will encompass the release of Palestinian civilians who are serving life sentences in Israeli prisons.

Israel is also expected to change its strategy during the prisoner exchange and move its forces from Gaza’s borders to an area roughly 700 meters inland because of the use of excessive force. 

Although the change was made in Israel, some places, like the Netzarim Corridor, were left out. However, Israel provided civilians with humanitarian help after repeatedly warning that a famine was spreading throughout the Gaza North. They allowed troops to cross the checkpoint while managing a 600-vessel control system in a single day to tackle this issue.

Israel will open the Rafah crossing with Egypt seven days after the first phase starts and will let injured Palestinians depart the Gaza Strip for medical assistance.

Second Phase

Suppose everything goes according to plan for the second stage. In that case, every other prisoner, mostly male soldiers, will be freed by Hamas in exchange for more Palestinians jailed within the Israeli prison system. As per the document currently there, Israel would withdraw completely from Gaza.

However, the conditions that remain to be voted upon by the Israeli cabinet stand in contradiction with the adamant positions of several far-right-wing cabinet members in Prime Minister Netanyahu’s cabinet. He is still advocating for their former prime minister and positions. This contrast is specifically evident, as Netanyahu has made statements about Hamas inhabiting Gaza to continue the conflict.

Third Phase

Details about a third stage are unclear. Suppose the requirements of the second stage are satisfied. In that case, the third stage will involve the transfer of the remaining hostages after implementing the rehabilitation plan, which is to be internationally supervised and will last between three and five years.

It has not been agreed on who will control Gaza in the events that follow the ceasefire Gaza. The US has advocated for a new version of the Palestinian Authority to prevent it.
