Sikh pilgrims will come to Pakistan on April 13 to participate in the celebrations of Khalsa Janma Day and Vasakhi Mela. Officials of the Evacuee Trust Property Board (ETPB), Pradhan and other Sikh leaders will be welcoming the guests.
The main ceremony will be held at Gurudwara Panja Sahib, Hasan Abdal, on April 14. The pilgrims will reach Nankana Sahib from Hassan Abdal on April 15 and on April 18, they will go to Gurudwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur, Narowal, reports The Express Tribune.
On April 20, the yatrees will visit Aimanabad and reach Lahore where they will stay for one day.
The Sikh pilgrims will return to India after completing their 10-day pilgrimage on April 22.
Update: Local police on Saturday booked a reporter and a cameraman of a private TV channel for “illegally” recording and broadcasting on social media the interviews of the three in-custody suspects in the Maria murder case, reports Dawn.
In the First Information Report (FIR) complainant Station House Officer (SHO) Muhammad Hasan stated that the private TV channel’s reporter Rana Khalid Mahmood and cameraman Ali Ahmad violated the law by recording video statements of the suspects in custody, without permission of the concerned authorities.
However, no arrest has so far been made in the case.
Meanwhile, journalists’ organizations have expressed concern over the registration of the case under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) declaring it beyond the Punjab police’s domain to book any media person. They also urged Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz to take notice of the alleged violation of law by the Punjab police and warned the government that journalists would be forced to stage protests if the “illegal” FIR against the two media persons was not dismissed.
The TV reporter, Rana Khalid, claims his lawyers had filed his pre-arrest bail plea before the court who refused to hear it with the remarks that the cases under PECA should be heard by a Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) court.
However, in the case, BOL News is claiming that the brother who filmed the murder, Shehbaz, and his wife Sumera have been convicted by the court for hiding the murder of 22-year-old Maria under section 201 of the penal code of Pakistan. They have been sent to jail on judicial remand.
Previously, in the Toba Tek Singh’s Maria murder case, the brother, Faisal, who was seen murdering the sister in the video, and the complicit father, Abdul Sattar, lying on a bed beside him have alleged that the brother who filmed it raped her. The two were talking to the media when they said that.

The other brother’s wife Sumaira can also be seen standing in the room in the video. A two-day physical remand of the victim’s brother Faisal and father Abdul Sattar, arrested on the charge of murder, has been obtained, while the other brother of the victim, Shehbaz, who made the video, and the sister-in-law Sumaira, who is seen in the video, have also been made part of the investigation, as per the police.

Medical literature is teeming with examples of people who suffered damage to their retinas — the layer of light-sensitive tissue at the back of the eye — and health professionals are offering advice on how to avoid becoming the next cautionary tale.
Aaron Zimmerman, a clinical professor of optometry at the Ohio State University, told AFP that the dangers of sungazing during eclipses were discussed by the ancient Greek philosopher Socrates, but it wasn’t until recently that science really caught up with how eye injury happened.
When it comes to eclipses, he explained, the main damage comes from “photochemical toxicity,” where short, high-energy wavelengths of light — blues, violets and non-visible ultraviolets — trigger chemical reactions that damage the rods and cones of the retina.
Cue visits to the emergency department by people with complaints of blurry vision, changes in color perception, and blind spots, with the outlook for recovery far from certain.
Human beings inherently look away from the Sun because of the discomfort it causes, but during eclipses “you can psychologically override” that instinct, explained Zimmerman.
A famous journal report about the 2017 US solar eclipse involved a woman in her twenties who presented to the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary after looking at the solar rim “several times for approximately 6 seconds without protective glasses” and then later with eclipse glasses.
Hours later, objects started to look fuzzy and out of shape, colors became distorted, and she developed a central black spot in her left eye.
An advanced imaging technique was able to show the damage at the cellular level which persisted on her follow up six weeks later.
Young adults might be more susceptible, the authors of the paper said, because of larger pupils, clearer eye structure, or “poorer recognition of the dangers” of viewing eclipses with improper eyewear.
“In some cases, it’s just partially damaged and it may resolve so that you don’t notice it anymore,” Neil Bressler, a professor of ophthalmology at Johns Hopkins University and editor-in-chief of JAMA Ophthalmology told AFP. If recovery happens, it’s normally within the first six months.
“But in other cases, it can leave a permanent blank spot… and we don’t have a treatment to reverse that. It’s like brain tissue, once you lose it, it won’t grow back,” added Bressler.
The best way to view the eclipse is with eclipse sunglasses, which block out 99.999 percent of light. Always go for genuine products. To test if your glasses are up to standard, “find the brightest light bulb in your home — and then look at that from up close and you should barely be able to see the light,” said Zimmerman.
If it’s too late to procure specialist eyewear, then there are indirect methods, such as punching a pinhole into a cardboard and letting the light shine onto another surface, or even using the humble kitchen colander to the same effect. NASA’s webcast is another option.
Those fortunate enough to be in the “path of totality,” under which the Moon will fully block out the Sun, can look up without glasses and admire the Sun’s outer atmosphere, or corona, glowing from behind the silhouette of the Moon.
But, said Bressler, the danger is not having protection before and after those precious moments, which can last anywhere from seconds to a few minutes, depending on your location.
“You must know when it begins and use protection before that, and you may be enamored by looking at all this, but you must have some alarm to tell you it’s about to end,” he warned.
Swiss sheep farmers on Saturday dumped the bodies of animals killed by wolves in front of a regional government building, demanding more action against the predators, Swiss media reported.
Around a dozen breeders came from the Saint-Barthelemy area in the western Swiss canton of Vaud to lay out the carcasses of 12 sheep in front of the regional government headquarters in Lausanne, the Chateau Saint-Maire.
“These sheep were killed last night,” Eric Herb, a member of a Swiss association demanding the regulation of big predators, was quoted as saying by the Keystone-ATS news agency.
“It is really time to act.”
“We are sick of this. We want the wolf killed,” agreed Patrick Perroud, a farmer and butcher from the nearby municipality of Oulens.
“Cohabitation is not possible. Our territory is too small,” he told Keystone-ATS.
The protesters told the news agency that wolves had killed 17 sheep in the same area late last month, two earlier this week and 13 overnight to Saturday.
“The breeders have played nice until now, but this time it was too much,” Herb said.
The protesters were planning to increase the pressure on the Vaud government environment minister, Vassilis Venizelos of the Green Party, he said.
One of the protesters’ banners read: “Vassilis step down”, Keystone-ATS reported.
The breeders had briefly negotiated with regional police before being allowed to lay down the animal carcasses on tarpaulin in front of the Chateau.
Participants in the protest, which was supported by the regional chapter of the far-right Swiss People’s Party — Switzerland’s largest party — lamented that they were losing sleep.
“We have to check on our animals every night,” one was quoted as saying.
After being wiped out more than a century ago, wolves have in recent decades begun returning to Switzerland and to several other European countries.
Since the first pack was spotted in the wealthy Alpine nation in 2012, the number of packs swelled to 32 last year, with around 300 individual wolves counted.
Nature conservation groups have hailed the return as a sign of a healthier and more diverse ecosystem.
But breeders and herders complain of attacks on livestock and have been ramping up demands to cull more wolves.
Swiss authorities last year relaxed the rules for hunting the protected species, and decided to allow large preventative culls in the most affected cantons but swift legal actions put those plans partially on ice.
The debate in several parts of Europe about wolves rose up the political agenda in September.
In an open letter to the European Commission, eight leading conservation groups said there were ways to make coexistence easier between humans and large wild animals like wolves.
“Damage to livestock is often linked to the lack of adequate supervision and/or physical protection,” they said. They pointed to strategies such as “the training of dogs to protect herds, education of herders, tools and technical solutions to deter wolves”.
Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz has announced the establishment of transgender schools at the division level. Additionally, she directed the relevant officials to provide educational facilities to special children in at least one government school in each district.
Dawn reports that these decisions were taken at a meeting held to review proposed school education reforms in the province.
While chairing the review meeting, CM Nawaz said: “Schools for transgender [community] will be established at divisional level.”
PTI-initiated Transgender schools
Nine of the 11 divisions in Punjab already have schools for the transgender community. The initiative was taken by the previous PTI government under the supervision of the then Punjab Minister for School Education Murad Raas.
Trans Educational School System, Multan, Principal Alisha Sherazi told Dawn that no one from the government had contacted them for the establishment of transgender schools, as such schools already existed in different cities of Punjab like D.G. Khan, Gujranwala, Rawalpindi, Sargodha, Faisalabad, Gujrat, Multan and Bahawalpur. Only the one established in Lahore was later closed, she added.
Transgender schools
Alisha Sherazi, a transgender and a former consultant of UNDP who did her MPhil in Education, Planning and Management from Burhanuddin Zakariya University, explained that three of the schools including D.G. Khan, Multan and Bahawalpur were giving vocational training to members of the transgender community. Four labs for IT, stitching, cooking and make-up classes were established in those schools, while other schools were focusing on academics, according to the principal.
The government did not have the exact figures of transgender community’s population in the Punjab, Alisha added.
At the meeting, CM Maryam Nawaz directed relevant authorities to implement a new comprehensive procedure.
Pakistan’s prime minister has ordered at least five senior police officials be punished for negligence after a suicide bomber killed five Chinese engineers at a major dam site last month, the country’s information minister said Saturday.
The attack in northwestern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province forced Power China and the China Gezhouba Company to suspend work on two dam projects after the bombing killed the five workers and a Pakistani driver, sending their van into a deep ravine.
Hundreds of Chinese people are employed at the Dasu and Diamer Bhasha dam construction sites, located around 100 kilometres (62 miles) apart in the mountainous region.
Minister of Information Attaullah Tarar said a committee appointed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif identified a regional official, three district officials and the director of security at the Dasu dam project for their “negligence” in fulfilling their duties.
“The prime minister has ordered immediate action against these officials,” Tarar told a press conference in the city of Lahore, without specifying what their punishment will be.
“The prime minister himself will be monitoring the security of Chinese (nationals). Those individuals who have shown negligence will be set as an example.”
Tarar said security matters regarding Chinese citizens would be “treated with utmost seriousness and any lapses will not be tolerated.”

Pilgrims are required to use mobile applications throughout their Hajj journey, offering comprehensive guidance ranging from their Hajj flight to accommodation in Saudi Arabia, supplemented by instructional videos. Each pilgrim will receive a complimentary mobile SIM card courtesy of a Saudi telecommunications company, facilitating 180 minutes of international calls.
Hajj training by the government of Pakistan
Pilgrims are poised to undergo the second phase of Hajj training conducted by 40 proficient trainers. It will commence on April 15th across 122 locations nationwide. These trainings will familiarize pilgrims with new initiatives and pertinent Hajj-related information.
To ensure the health and well-being of pilgrims mandatory vaccination protocols are set to commence ten days prior to the commencement of Hajj flights.
Pilgrims will be equipped with essential amenities including a suitcase, hand carry bag, shoe bag, Ihram belt, and a distinctive green scarf adorned with the Pakistani flag.
Update: Governor Punjab Balighur Rehman has accepted the resignation of Michael A. Thomson, principal of Aitchison College Lahore.
Geo’s sources at the Governor’s House say that Amina Imran has been appointed as the acting principal of Aitchison College in place of Michael A. Thompson.
Governor of Punjab has also approved the fee waiver policy, according to which, if the student moves to another city for 3 years, he will get a fee waiver of up to 50%.
Previously, the government of Punjab was not able to persuade Aitchison College Principal Michael A Thompson to change his mind and stick to his post.
Thompson did not withdraw his resignation, contrary to an official claim.
Even though the principal resigned, Punjab Governor Baligh ur Rehman granted him a paid leave for 28 days in hopes of negotiating the matter during that time.
The government, in a statement to the media, claimed that Thompson withdrew his resignation. However, Mr Thompson has told Dawn that he had not withdrawn his resignation.
Principal Thomson had resigned from his post a couple of days ago after developing differences with the Governor House over a change in the college’s fee waiver policy.
He had earlier refused to accept the fee waiver application submitted by the wife of the ex-civil servant, Ahad Cheema. Cheema is now a senator and federal minister for finance ministry.
Cheema’s two sons had to leave the college after the transfer of their mother, Saima Ahad Cheema, also a civil servant, to Islamabad. She had sought retention of the seats and fee waiver from the principal who, quoting the policy, rejected her request.
However, Ahad Cheema approached Governor Balighur Rehman who sent the application to the college’s Board of Governors that changed the fee waiver policy, accepting the application.
In his resignation, Thomson had cited interference in the management of the college.
A protest outside the Governor house and a severe backlash on mainstream and social media resulted in Ahad Cheema sending a letter to the Punjab governor, Balighur Rehman stating that he does not want to avail the fee waiver facility for his children anymore.

Ahad Cheema the federal Minister for Economic Affairs, is currently a subject of backlash for using his position to get a fee waiver for his children at Aitchison College. The waiver was requested by his wife, Saima Ahad Cheema, who is also a bureaucrat, with the request that since their two children did not attend Aitchison college for three years, but kept their seats, they shouldn’t be required to pay. They made the request to the Governor of Punjab who forwarded it to the principal of Aitchison College. The principal resigned in protest.
Ahad Cheema, in a letter to the Punjab governor, Balighur Rehman stated that he does not want to avail the fee waiver facility for his children anymore. He lambasted that politics has overshadowed the “solution-oriented and responsive policy” issued by the governor, which allowed a fee waiver for students under similar circumstances. Cheema said that his family has suffered “mockery, slur and a vilification campaign in this episode just because of my being in public office.”
Cheema also blamed Principal Thomson for orchestrating a strange and pointless controversy, alleging that Thomson had already resigned and is on his way out. “The Principal’s brazen and high-headed refusal of the Board’s and Chairman’s policy decisions is unheard of.”
As a continuation of his claim, Cheema, in Shahzeb Khanzada’s show, reasserted that Principal Thomson had offered him “an individual relief” and “was communicated through some respectable people who were in the knowledge of the matter”. However, Cheema said that his family refused to take any “under-the-table deal” based on principles.
Cheema also urged the governor to “not relent on the principle and not withdraw the new policy under any nefarious pressure” because he believes it is going to be very helpful for students and parents in the future.
Previously, Ahad Cheema, federal minister of economic affairs, has along with the newly elected government landed in a controversy as he is blamed for using his ties and position to influence the principal of Aitchison College Michael Thomson, to change the college’s policy and waive off his children’s fee.
The minister appeared on Shahzeb Khanzada’s show to defend his stance where he described how the policy as totally unfair. “If you just take my name out of this controversy then what is wrong there in Governor Punjab’s orders,” he started off by asking. He asserted that Governor Baleegh ur Rehman has made a fair policy for all.
Cheema laid out how his wife had requested for a leave because of her transfer yet wanted the fee to be waived off because paying fee in two schools was difficult. The principal declined the request and so she requested that the college policy be reviewed. The request was then presented to the Governor who referred it to the Board.
Khanzada then said that the majority of the board had retained the current policy of the college, emphasizing that Governor Punjab was misinterpreting the board because they did not amend the policy. Additionally, he stated how the children were adjusted in a special manner going against college policy which has not been changed in years. To this Cheema responded that, “The principal approached me two times (indirectly) to get this matter resolved in my personal capacity and not agitate it on a policy level and I declined it both the times because we are not interested in gaining any personal favour and we want this to be changed on a policy level.” He further added that if the Principal wants, he can take the names of the interlocutors.
During the course of the interview, Cheema professed he does not want “individual relief” but a decision taken principally. He refused to comment on the charge-sheet issued by the Governor and the comments made by Atta Tarar because that is not his mandate.
The principal of Aitchison College, Michael Thomson announced his resignation in a letter to staff and board members, stating that the Punjab Governor Baligh ur Rehman’s ‘biased actions undermined the school’s governance and management’.
Thomson’s decision came after the wife of Federal Minister for Economic Affairs and Establishment Ahad Cheema, asked for her two son’s school fees to be waived off for three years. She sent Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman the request. Following her request, the governor issued an order after which their fees was waived off for three years. But Principal Thomson refused to do so.
Thomson said the decision taken by the governor to ‘extend a favour’ to Ahad Cheema’s family violates the policy of the school.
The letter said that “politics and nepotism have no place in the schools”. He added further, “this is not how I planned to leave Atchison, but I will share with you that a continuation of very poor governance has left me no other choice.” He said that some “prejudiced actions by Governor House have contributed to a breakdown of governance and management, under which I had to finally draw a line.”
In his letter to the members of the management committee, Principal Thomson laid out that paying a tuition fee for a guaranteed place comes under college policy. The policy is applicable for long leave to a maximum of three years leave. He stressed that this request by Mr. and Mrs. Cheema is a “wrong perpetrated on a large scale to suit a smaller outcome.” He closed the letter by saying that he refuses to abide by the order and has informed Syed Babar Ali who is the chairman of the Management Committee. He asserted that he will not play any role in management and admissions after April 1.

Federal Information Minister Atta Tarar said that Ahad Cheema’s children have not been studying in Aitchison College for three years, so his wife applied for fee waiver according to the rules, which was approved by the Governor of Punjab, according to the law. He declared that the issue is being misrepresented.
Governor Punjab Baligh ur Rehman has rejected the claims of the principal. He said that Ahad Cheema was posted in Islamabad for a year due to his job and Ahad Cheema’s children were not able to go to Aitchison. He emphasised that it was requested to waive the fee for the classes which these children had not taken.
On the issue of resignation of the principal of Aitchison College, the governor of Punjab said that the resignation of the principal was already to become effective in August 2024. The principal of Aitchison College was receiving a salary of Rs. 40 lakhs and the audit of receiving this hefty amount has been started.
The governor claimed that Principal of Aitchison College used to take more than 100 holidays in a year and he ‘adopted this tactic to avoid a probe’.

Day temperatures in the upper and central areas of Sindh may reach 38 to 40 degrees celsius, while the temperature in lower Sindh is likely to be 36 to 38 degrees celsius.
During April 7 to 9, temperature in Karachi can also reach 36 to 38 degrees celsius, says the Meteorological Department.
