  • Pakistan moves to revive cotton sector amid surging imports

Pakistan moves to revive cotton sector amid surging imports

Islamabad has committed to make significant changes to the cotton sector in an attempt to revive it.

As per the details, the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association (PCGA) revealed that production levels fell short of the targets set for 2024-25 by a staggering 34 percent.

National Food Security Minister Rana Tanveer Monday announced that Islamabad will review the extortionate 18 percent General Sales Tax (GST) on local lint. According to the minister, this move would introduce fairness in the current market environment.

Currently, GST is levied on domestic cotton while imported cotton and yarn arrive duty free into the country. Textile millers have thus preferred to purchase imported cotton as it is more economical for production. This has served to the detriment of local cotton farmers who are struggling to compete with cheap cotton imports.

Tanveer said that agents with vested interests in the production of cotton will go over strategies to attempt to revive cotton production levels. These discussions will take place as part of the National Cotton Revival Conference on Tuesday. He pledged that the ministry will support farmers in order to boost cotton production levels.

According to reports, Islamabad aims to collaborate with international agencies such as the International Cotton Advisory Committee (ICAC). Officials are interested in such collaboration opportunities as it may enable growth for the cotton sector, effectively propelling Pakistan up the ranks in the international cotton market.

Tanveer met with ICAC Executive Director Eric Trachtenberg who was leading a delegation to Pakistan. Reports revealed that the meeting covered cotton trade, production and even the development of the textile sector.

As per data from the PCGA, Pakistan was only able to produce half of the targeted level of lint for crop year 2024-25. This reveals the extent to which duty-free cotton imports have hampered domestic cotton yields.

The Federal Committee on agriculture had set the targeted level of cotton bale production at 11.2 million bales. However, the agricultural sector only produced a measly 5.5 million.

While reduced input supply usually results in manufactures clambering for said inputs, the reverse is being witnessed in Pakistan. Despite a significant fall in domestic cotton supply, ginning factories and spinning mills possess large stocks of the commodity.

Ginning factories have an additional 114,000 bales in their inventories, bringing their total cotton stock up to 486,000 bales. This represents a sharp 31 percent rise in stock held by industrialists.

The reason behind this seemingly contradictory fact is that millers and ginners are procuring a vast majority of their cotton inputs from imports. As per reports, a staggering 1.5 million cotton bales have been imported with import agreements totaling the purchase of an additional 3.5 million cotton bales in the pipeline.

According to them, security measures for foreign players were reviewed, including those for the ground, pavilion area, hotel routes and the surrounding stadium premises.

Police authorities have assured that adequate security arrangements will be made for foreign players.

Brothers busted for stealing sister’s gobar

A woman from Muzaffargarh in South Punjab has filed a case with local police, charging two of her brothers and five others with stealing cow dung from her.

Nagina Mai has alleged in the FIR that her brothers and other suspects stole a pile of cow dung that was lying outside her house in Rangpur on January 31. The pile was reportedly big enough to require a tractor trolley for the theft.

Cow dung is a valuable asset in rural areas of the subcontinent where it is not just used as manure but also as biofuel, insect repellent and, more recently, as an environmental cleanser.

Nagina Mai has said that the cow dung stolen from outside her home was worth Rs 35,000.

Rangpur police have said that they have arrested one suspect and recovered the stolen cow dung.

  • ‘Lala group’: Ahmed Shehzad opens up about ‘politics, grouping’ in national team

‘Lala group’: Ahmed Shehzad opens up about ‘politics, grouping’ in national team

Former Pakistan cricket team opener Ahmed Shehzad has opened up about alleged politics and grouping that he says marred the workings of the national side during his active career.

Appearing on a podcast with Ahmed Ali Butt, Shehzad was asked if he and his teammates faced allegations of grouping much like those facing the current squad. “Did standing against Lala’s [Shahid Afridi] group mean you could not survive?” Butt asked.

“Look, I don’t want to swear on anything… I don’t believe in such things. But if there’s one thing that stands out in my life, something that I take pride in… I don’t lie. Shahid Bhai was always like an elder brother and a superstar to me,” Shehzad said.

“If you were in my place… imagine being a 17-year-old in the team and idolising Shahid Afridi. Shahid Afridi himself invites you over for dinner or lunch. What would you say? ‘No, I won’t go because it will be considered a group?’. I don’t recall Shahid Bhai ever saying anything negative about anyone or influencing me in any way regarding grouping,” he added.

He went on to say their conversations were mostly about cricket and how they could improve their game. “It was mostly just Shahid Bhai and me who used to go out together. Now, can two people really form a group? That’s not how it works. Groups are usually made up of six to eight people.”

When asked who was against him at the time, the former opener said that six or seven players from Punjab were good friends of his. “But when I joined the team, I had no idea about groups at all. When I was dropped, that’s when I started noticing things. I used to look at the walls wondering what was happening… why it was happening, and who was behind it. I had no answers,” Shehzad said.

“When you go through tough times, you start analysing things. I kept working hard and tried to understand what was happening. Eventually, I found all the answers myself — not because someone told me, but because I observed and learned from my own experiences.”

“There was a time when a cricketer’s career used to last 10 to 15 years. The first five years were for grooming… and then players had careers spanning 15 to 20 years. Now, we are living in a time where careers last just one or two years. PSL has given us a lot of entertainment, but I feel it has also damaged our cricket,” Shehzad said.

Separately, the former star cricketer, in a social media post, slammed the Pakistan Cricket Board’s (PCB) selection committee over the squad announced for the upcoming Champions Trophy.

“Fakhar’s return is happening, but we still don’t know who will open with him,” he said and questioned where would Saud Shakeel fit into the playing XI.

“The team selection shows how unprofessional the system has become,” Shehzad said and went on to criticise the inclusion of Usman Khan and Faheem Ashraf. “Their selection was based on their performances in the recent T20 tournament in Bangladesh rather than their ODI form. This was Pakistan’s preparation for a major ICC tournament that they are hosting.”

PCB announced the squad for the upcoming mega tournament on Friday. It includes Babar Azam, Fakhar Zaman, Kamran Ghulam, Saud Shakeel, Tayyab Tahir,  Faheem Asharf, Khushdil Shah, Muhammad Rizwan, Usman Khan,  Abrar Ahmed, Haris Rauf, Sheheen Afridi, Naseem Shah, Muhammad Hasnain.

While the selection of a number of players has not sit well with netizens and former cricketers alike, the PCB has until February 11 to make changes to the squad.

After that, changes will only be allowed on medical grounds, with the approval of the ICC’s Event Technical Committee.

  • ‘Starlink will have to suspend services if PTA shuts down internet’

‘Starlink will have to suspend services if PTA shuts down internet’

Journalist Azaz Syed claimed on Monday that the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has set conditions for Elon Musk’s satellite broadband company, Starlink, to operate in Pakistan.

Speaking on the YouTube channel Talk SHOCK, Syed stated that the company has submitted an application to the PTA for approval to launch its internet services in the country.

According to the journalist, one of the key conditions set by the PTA is that Starlink must comply with government-imposed internet shutdowns. This means that if the government shuts down the internet in the country, Starlink must also suspend its services in Pakistan.

Musk, while responding to Pakistani social media activists on X (formerly Twitter) last month, confirmed that he was awaiting Islamabad’s approval to launch Starlink in Pakistan.

Days after the response from the Starlink owner, Minister of State for Information Technology (IT) and Telecommunication, Shaza Fatima Khawaja, stated in an interview with a private news outlet that Musk’s company had registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

“[Following the approval] the space board authority is looking into various technical aspects, and we have communicated [about this] to Starlink,” she said.

The journalist claimed that some had already brought the Starlink internet device into the country and had used it.

“Starlink internet is not very expensive, as its routers are available for around $500 to $600,” he said.

Starlink is a satellite internet constellation built by SpaceX to provide satellite internet access. The system aims to deliver high-speed broadband to areas where access has been unreliable, expensive, or unavailable. The network consists of thousands of small, mass-produced satellites in low Earth orbit (LEO), working in tandem with ground transceivers.

Reports cited a senior executive from an IT company who stated that they had been using Starlink’s services to maintain a reliable and uninterrupted connection for their overseas customers.

According to the IT official, the company ordered all necessary equipment from the United Kingdom (UK), and although the service was more expensive, it eased their concerns about losing business.

“Starlink’s standard residential package is GBP 79 [around PKR 27,000] while business packages start at GBP 110 [around PKR 37,000] per month. Our company has acquired their upgraded package, the monthly fee for which is about GBP 750 [over PKR 2.5 lacs]. Their rates are very high, but we are no longer worried about internet outages and disruption of business activities,” an IT official said.

Angry passenger sets airport sofa on fire after deportation

In an unusual incident at Beirut’s Rafic Hariri International Airport, a passenger set a sofa on fire in protest against his deportation.

According to foreign media reports, the fire broke out in the General Security deportation office within the airport. Civil Defence personnel responded immediately and managed to extinguish the flames before the situation escalated.

Reports suggest that the passenger, who had arrived from abroad, was denied entry and ordered to be deported. Enraged by the decision, he ignited a sofa inside the airport premises. The fire brigade quickly took control of the situation, and no flight schedules were disrupted as a result of the incident.

Caretaker Minister of Public Works and Transport, Dr Ali Hamieh, along with the Director General of Civil Aviation, Fadi Al-Hassan, visited the airport to assess the situation.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the passenger was deported for violation of rules, including smoking on the plane. Upon being sent to the deportation office, he set fire to a piece of furniture in an act of defiance against the authorities’ decision.

  • ‘I dismissed Virat Kohli with advice from bus driver,’ reveals Himanshu Sangwan

‘I dismissed Virat Kohli with advice from bus driver,’ reveals Himanshu Sangwan

Indian Railways’ fast bowler Himanshu Sangwan became an overnight sensation after dismissing star India batter Virat Kohli in a Ranji Trophy match.

Sangwan recently revealed how the moment unfolded and talked about the advice he received from an unusual source before the match.

The surprising advice came from the a bus driver, who pinpointed Virat Kohli’s weakness against deliveries bowled at the fourth or fifth stumps.

“We didn’t know the match would be live-streamed. We found out that Rishabh Pant wouldn’t play, but Virat would, and the match would be shown live. I was leading the Railways’ pace attack, and everyone in the team said they thought I would dismiss Virat Kohli,” Sangwan recalled in an interview with an Indian media outlet.

He added, “Even the bus driver told me that I should bowl at the fourth-fifth stump line to Virat Kohli, and he’ll get out. There was no specific plan for Virat Kohli. The coaches told us that players from Delhi like to play attacking cricket, and they are all aggressive stroke players. We were just told to bowl a disciplined line,” said the 29-year-old.

Virat Kohli, the former India captain, made his return to the domestic tournament after 12 years to play for Delhi. However, his much-anticipated return was interrupted by Himanshu Sangwan, who bowled him out for just six runs at the Arun Jaitley Stadium last week.
