    In recent months, there has been a flurry of information and speculation regarding the storage and RAM specifications of the forthcoming iPhone 15 Pro. This situation has been marked by conflicting reports.

    MacRumors, a popular source, has recently verified the storage configurations that Apple tested for the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, which encompass 256 GB, 512 GB, and 1 TB options. Interestingly, Apple has sourced NAND storage components from multiple vendors, including SK Hynix, Western Digital, Kioxia, and Samsung. 

    Despite earlier rumours circulating about a potential 2TB storage variant, there is no substantiated evidence to support its inclusion. Additionally, a Weibo leak that suggested the iPhone 15 Pro would commence with a 256GB storage capacity has proven inaccurate, as the available storage options will align with the tiers seen in the iPhone 14 Pro.

    Turning to the RAM specifications, Apple intends to equip the iPhone 15 Pro with LPDDR5 DRAM, consistent with the RAM utilised in previous flagship devices. Testing has been conducted on two RAM configurations, specifically 6GB and 8GB, sourced from Samsung, Micron, and SK Hynix. 

    The final RAM configuration for mass production units remains undisclosed, but it is conceivable that Apple may adjust the RAM based on the storage capacity of the device, potentially granting 8GB to higher-capacity models. 

    TrendForce’s recent report suggests that Apple may indeed opt for 8GB in the iPhone 15 Pro, implying that the 6GB configuration could be abandoned.

    In addition to these internal components, the iPhone 15 Pro is set to feature an upgraded A17 SoC, manufactured using TSMC’s cutting-edge 3nm process. The A17 chip is anticipated to incorporate an extra GPU core, promising enhanced graphics performance. 

    Furthermore, the performance cores are expected to operate at an increased clock speed of 3.70 GHz, a notable improvement over the A16’s 3.46 GHz clock speed.

    Beyond these technical enhancements, the iPhone 15 Pro is poised to introduce several notable features, including an entirely new titanium frame, USB-C connectivity, and the incorporation of a periscope zoom lens in the iPhone 15 Pro Max variant.

    iPhone owners who were participants in a class action lawsuit against Apple, claiming that the company intentionally reduced the speed of their older iPhones to encourage them to upgrade to the latest model, are finally on the verge of receiving their compensation. Recently, a judge has given the green light for the payment process to proceed, as stated in a report from SiliconValley.com last week.

    The settlement obtained preliminary approval in March 2020. Although the opportunity to be included in the settlement has since expired, approximately 3 million claims were submitted, according to information from SiliconValley.com. These individuals are now anticipating the arrival of their $65 checks, over three years after the initial settlement.

    The distribution of payments faced delays due to objections raised by two iPhone owners who disagreed with certain aspects of the settlement. However, these objectors have now lost their appeal in the 9th US Circuit Court of Appeals, as detailed in the report.

    Apple encountered this lawsuit after confessing in 2017 that its iOS software intentionally slowed down the performance of older iPhones. During that period, the technology giant issued an apology, updated its software, and also offered replacement batteries.

    SECP strikes down 120 illegal personal loan apps

    Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) has taken measures to protect the public from falling into debt traps of illegal loan apps. Collaborating with Google, Apple and Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA), SECP has succeeded in removal of 120 illegal loan apps that were previously available online.

    The largely ignored scam of illegal personal loan apps came to light recently when last month, a resident of Rawalpindi, died by suicide after being threatened by a lender who gave him loan through one such app. This incident raised serious concerns about misuse of data privacy violations, and coercive recovery practices by the illegal loan apps. The SECP has not only tightened its regulatory framework for licensed Non-Banking Finance Companies (NBFCs) but has also initiated effective steps with the relevant authorities to shut down unauthorized and illegal loan apps.

    SECP has also referred the 120 blocked apps to the FIA for further action in accordance with the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act of 2016. SECP regularly checks the Google Play Store and the Apple App Store for the presence of any illegal apps.

    Recently Google has introduced Pakistan’s Personal Loan App Policy, according to which Google only allows SECP-approved Personal Loan Apps for placement on its Google Play Store.

    Personal loan borrowers have been advised by SECP to obtain loans only from licensed NBFCs. The SECP’s regulatory framework for approved Apps requires transparent disclosure of fees, loan duration, instalments, and charges. Moreover, SECP has also initiated inspections of licensed NBFCs providing loans through Apps to verify that these are not engaged in miss-selling, breaches of data privacy, or coercive recovery practices etc.

    Russian officials have been advised to stop using iPhones due to unverified accusations made by the country’s intelligence service.

    The Financial Times reported that, commencing July 17, employees within Russia’s trade ministry will be prohibited from utilising iPhones during work hours. Other ministries, including one currently undisclosed, are reportedly planning to follow suit, along with the state oil company, Rostec.

    The decision to distance themselves from Apple products initially emerged in March when the Kremlin instructed officials to abandon the use of these devices due to concerns surrounding potential vulnerabilities exploited by US hackers.

    Subsequently, in June, the Russian government accused Apple of collaborating with US intelligence agencies, an allegation firmly refuted by the company.

    The accusation stemmed from a report by a cybersecurity firm, asserting that iPhones running outdated versions of iOS had been infected with malware, rendering them susceptible to eavesdropping, as reported by The Washington Post.

    Despite the claims made by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), no substantiating evidence has been presented, and independent security experts have found no indication that Apple has incorporated any form of “backdoor” exemption into the device’s encryption.

    This is not to imply that no genuine security vulnerabilities exist. Following Russia’s allegations, Apple swiftly responded by releasing software patches for its iOS system, acknowledging the role played by researchers at the Moscow-based Kaspersky Lab in identifying these weaknesses.

    It is worth noting that the ban on official usage will not impact the general public. Apple withdrew from the Russian market in the wake of last year’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine. Nonetheless, Apple products continue to be imported from other countries.

    Apple made a grand announcement at WWDC this week, unveiling their revolutionary Vision Pro spatial computer. With a hefty price tag of $3,500, this cutting-edge device won’t hit the shelves until early 2024. However, Apple isn’t stopping there; they’re actively developing a more affordable version of this futuristic product.

    According to Mark Gurman, Apple has set its sights on releasing an affordable AR/VR spatial computer by the end of 2024. As expected, Apple is simultaneously working on an upgraded version of the Vision Pro, promising an even faster processor for mind-boggling performance.

    Now that the Vision Pro name is out in the open, speculation runs wild about the potential name for its cheaper counterpart. Gurman suggests “Apple Vision” or perhaps “Apple Vision One.” But the burning question remains: how will Apple manage to slash the price? Gurman’s got a few intriguing ideas up his sleeve.

    In the initial Vision Pro model, the costliest components are the M2 and R1 chips, the remarkable 4K micro-LED displays, and the advanced camera and sensor hardware. To trim costs, Apple might opt for lower-quality screens, a slightly less powerful processor, and a reduced number of cameras and sensors. Additionally, the spatial audio speakers within the headset could be omitted, with users encouraged to rely on their trusty AirPods Pro for an immersive audio experience.

    But that’s not all. Apple could also simplify the headband design, insist on AirPods for spatial audio instead of including speakers within the Vision Pro strap, switch to a physical adjustment mechanism for IPD (the distance between eye pupils), and even eliminate features like the 3D camera. When combined with refined production methods, economies of scale, and a more cost-effective frame, one can imagine Apple knocking off a significant chunk from the price tag.

    Yet, Gurman astutely points out that there are certain aspects where Apple won’t compromise. The external EyeSight screen, responsible for showcasing the wearer’s eyes, along with the essential eye- and hand-tracking system, are intrinsic to the Apple Vision experience—akin to how a touchscreen is inseparable from an iPhone. So, it’s highly likely that these captivating features will be retained in the more affordable model, ensuring a mesmerizing and immersive journey for users.
