    Imran Khan to run for Oxford University chancellor seat

    Former Prime Minister of Pakistan Imran Khan is going to run for chancellor of Oxford University while being imprisoned in Adiala Jail, The Telegraph reported.

    The chancellor’s seat became vacant after the resignation of Lord Patten, who held the coveted post for 21 years.

    Khan will enter an online ballot for the position from his prison cell in Pakistan. However, his victory is unlikely, according to The Telegraph.

    Historically, this is the first time the elections for the chancellor will be held online, as previously, the traditional procedure was adopted in which graduates were required to attend the process in full academic dress.

    “Imran Khan will contest for the chancellor of Oxford University as there is a public demand that he should contest,” Zulfi Bukhari told The Telegraph.

    Defence Minister Khawaja Asif recently commented on the Geo News programme about former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s admission of calling the protests outside GHQ, saying, “This is just the first step by Khan towards apology.”

    Asif stated, “They [PTI] are very sharp, they can do anything to return to power. They will even touch their feet if they have to get back to power. ”

    He said, “The problem is that nobody trusts them [PTI] now.”

    The Defence Minister was, however, confident that any potential moves by PTI to warm up to the establishment would not threaten their government.

    “There is no danger to us if the founder PTI apologises, if they apologise and become part of the political stream, what can we object to?” said Asif

    Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif chaired a federal cabinet meeting today in which the Premier strongly condemned critical posts being posted by the “official website of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) against the COAS General Asim Munir and his family.”

    “From the official website of PTI, the kind of things that are being said against Army Chief General Asim Munir and his family, the eyes have never seen such a heartbreaking scene,” remarked Sharif in the cabinet meeting today.

    He stressed that it is utterly important that there is “no tolerance for any moves against our nation, its people and the Army Chief.”

    The Prime Minister remarked that many sacrifices have been made by the officers and soldiers to protect the country.

    US expresses concern over PTI leaders’ arrest

    United States State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller held a press briefing in Washington today expressing “concerns” over the arrest of opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders while urging the government to respect human rights and democratic principles.

    “We have seen the reports of the arrests of PTI leaders. We are always concerned when we see arrests of opposition leaders,” stated the spokesperson.

    His remarks came after the recent arrest of PTI’s information secretary Raoof Hasan, for allegedly heading a “digital media cell responsible for international propaganda against the state of Pakistan.”

    Raoof Hasan was taken into custody by Islamabad Police on Monday from the PTI’s Central Secretariat in Islamabad while the police also seized some computers from the place.

    Geo News reported that charges under the Prevention of Electronic Crimes Act (PECA) have been filed against 12 PTI workers, including Hasan.

    The government is as determined as ever to ban opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) after party founder Imran Khan told journalists in Adiala Jail that he called for protests outside GHQ, Rawalpindi.

    The government is interpreting Khan’s statement as an admission of guilt, while PTI leaders have been claiming that Khan meant a “peaceful protest.”

    Federal Minister of Information Atta Tarar said, “We have principally decided to ban PTI but are waiting for a broader consensus to impose the ban.”

    Earlier, when the government announced its decision to ban PTI, the ruling government’s ally party, the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), distanced itself from the decision as it wasn’t consulted.

    Imran Khan refuses to take lie-detecting test at Adiala Jail

    Founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan refused to take forensic tests, including polygraph, photogrammetry and voice matching tests, as Lahore police tried to interrogate him in May 9 cases.

    Khan has been nominated as a suspect in 12 cases related to anti-terrorism, inciting the public against the state, and other charges as well.

    The Lahore police team, including Punjab Forensic Science Agency (PFSA) officials, tried to question former Prime Minister Imran Khan.

    “I am under investigation by many agencies and will not take any tests for now. I will give the police time later regarding different tests,” said Khan to the police’s questions.

    However, after assurances from DSP Javed Asif of Lahore Police that justice would be ensured, Khan agreed to answer questions for 15 minutes but refused the tests.

    Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leaders held a hunger strike outside the Parliament House on Tuesday, in symbolic opposition to founder PTI Imran Khan’s and party workers’ incarceration on Tuesday.

    The strike was led by PTI’s Secretary General Omar Ayub, along with PTI Chairman Gohar Ali Khan and other senior members.

    The symbolic hunger strike is scheduled from 3 PM to 7 PM.

    Meanwhile, the Sunni Ittehad Council has also decided to establish a hunger strike camp in Punjab, following the PTI’s example in the federal capital, on July 24 outside the Punjab Assembly from 3 PM to 7 PM.

    Opposition Leader in the Punjab Assembly, Malik Ahmad Bachhar, said that the decision to initiate the hunger strike was taken under the directive of Imran Khan.

    Founder Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) Imran Khan has hit out at the Chief Justice of Pakistan, Qazi Faez Isa, for what he called ‘being in a hurry’ to fix the review of a judgement regarding reserved seats, emphasising that the PTI’s petition against human rights violations had been pending for months.

    Khan talked with journalists in Adiala jail, expressing concerns that the CJP should rescue himself from all PTI-related petitions due to an alleged conflict of interest arising from CJP’s wife’s statements against the PTI leadership.

    The former Prime Minister stated that the PTI workers are being tried in military courts and feared that he might also face the same situation concerning the May 9 cases.

    As rumours abound in the country’s political sphere that there might be a technocratic set-up in the new future, however, Khan dismissed the idea, stressing that it would be better to impose a ‘martial law’ once and for all.

    The former premier said that those who think a technocrat set-up would bring Pakistan out of the crisis “live in a fool’s paradise.”

    Bannu Aman jirga demands end to ‘Good Taliban’

    As the Bannu Aman (Peace) Jirga, a traditional assembly of elders, concluded their meeting at the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister’s house, the issue of ‘good Taliban’ – the militants who have surrendered to the security forces – came to the forefront.

    One of the jirga’s key demands was the “elimination of both the good and bad Taliban and their centres.”

    The Jirga also sought to end the Good Taliban’s patrols and pickets in the area. Dawn News reported that the presence of these militants and the Jirga’s demand to end them will be challenging for both the provincial and federal governments.

    On Sunday, CM Gandapur issued a video message on social media stating that he had pointed out at the first meeting of the apex committee that “some armed men—posing as government officials or claiming to represent government agencies—were roaming the area and interfering in government affairs.”

    Gandapur said that he has ordered the police to arrest such individuals immediately.

    Senator Faisal Vawda has alleged that former Prime Minister Imran Khan, citing evidence provided by former director general Inter-Services Intelligence Lt Gen (retd) Faiz Hameed, was responsible for creating political instability due to his direct involvement in the May 9 violence last year, Express Tribune reported.

    “Some time ago, I revealed that Imran Khan’s close associate, Faiz Hameed, provided evidence of Khan’s involvement in the May 9 vandalism,” stated Vawda.

    He further said, “This was not Faiz Hameed’s suggestion; however, Imran Khan was part of the entire scheme.”

    The senator clarified that the government doesn’t face any threats from a technocrat government or martial law but rather from the ongoing power struggle within the PML-N.

    He opined that the government should renegotiate electricity agreements with IPPs, saying, “These political parties were responsible for the agreements that ensure payments to IPPs regardless of power supply. Such contracts involve kickbacks.”
