Business owners raise alarms over rising port charges at Karachi Port

Business owners from numerous industries are raising concerns regarding rising port charges at Karachi Port Trust (KPT). According to reports, the Minister for Maritime Affairs, Qaisar Ahmed Shaikh, asserted that the government will ensure that port operations remain cost-effective.

The Minister received these concerns in a meeting he presided over in Islamabad on Wednesday. He commented on Islamabad’s commitment to creating an atmosphere conducive to business and economic growth.

He conceded that the cargo charges at the port were indeed rising and outlined how important it was to reduce the running costs of port operations. Qaisar Ahmad also highlighted how important cost-effectiveness was in ensuring that Pakistan’s trade operations remain competitive.

Both the Chambers of Commerce and Industry hosted the meeting after receiving numerous complaints regarding the high port charges at KPT. Reports revealed that yarn traders and other business associations outlined the rising cost of doing business in the country because of rising charges.

Various government officials attended the meeting and agreed on the need to mitigate the financial burden that business owners were facing. The complainants commented on how the higher port charges were reducing their export competitiveness while also detrimentally impacting importers because the higher prices cut into their profit margins.

The meeting focused on revising port tariffs to make sure that KPT’s costs are in line with those charged by other ports in the region. Officials also expressed the need to reduce delays at the port while increasing operational efficiency at the port, as per reports.

KPT officials at the meeting revealed information which implied that they were likely not to be blamed for the higher costs. KPT-operated berths have lower cumulative charges compared to other berths at Karachi Port, which are operated by foreign parties. Currently, Dubai Port operates one of the two berths at Karachi Port, while KPT manages the other.

KPT officials also asked the complainants to elaborate on the issues they faced, likely to determine which side was to be blamed for the higher costs. However, reports claim that business owners who attended the meeting, most of them via a digital link, were not able to clarify which berths were charging them higher fees.

Business owners, however, will send additional details of their complaints to the ministry. This will likely give them enough time to figure out and update their complaints to include which berths their cargoes have been docking at.

According to reports, however, the KPT delegation agreed to continue to provide high-quality service to their customers while also rationalising port charges.

  • Nadeem Anjum met Malik Riaz for testimony against Imran, claims Azaz Syed

Nadeem Anjum met Malik Riaz for testimony against Imran, claims Azaz Syed

Prominent journalist Azaz Syed appeared on a private media channel on Wednesday, alleging that ex-intelligence chief Lieutenant General Nadeem Ahmed Anjum once met property tycoon Malik Riaz in Dubai to talk about providing testimony against former Premier Imran Khan in the 190 million-pound case, for which Khan was recently convicted.

“…There is no doubt that Malik Riaz is under pressure [to testify against Imran Khan]. Nadeem Anjum [former DG ISI] had gone to meet him in Dubai,” Azaz said in reply when asked whether Riaz was bearing pressure of testimony against former PM Imran Khan in the 190 million pounds case.

Riaz, following the National Accountability Bureau’s (NAB) press release on Tuesday against his Dubai-based project, took to X (formerly Twitter), warning, “NAB’s baseless press release today is actually a new blackmailing demand. I am holding back, but there is a storm within me. If this dam breaks, then everyone’s façade will shatter. Don’t forget that the secrets of the past 25–30 years are preserved along with evidence.”

Riaz stressed that he will neither be used against anyone nor will anyone blackmail him, adding, “My decision yesterday was the same as it is today: no matter how much oppression you inflict, I (Malik Riaz) will not testify.”

NAB on Tuesday cautioned the public against investing in Bahria Town’s new real estate project in Dubai, emphasising that the government was reaching out to the United Arab Emirates (UAE) to seek property tycoon Malik Riaz’s extradition through legal avenues.

“Mr Malik Riaz is residing in Dubai, UAE. He has recently launched a project for the construction of luxury apartments in Dubai, UAE. The general public at large is hereby advised and warned to refrain from investing in the stated project. If the general public at large invests in the stated project, their actions would tantamount to money laundering, for which they may face criminal/ legal proceedings,” the anti-corruption watchdog said in a press release carried by Radio Pakistan.

Azaz Syed further claimed that President Asif Ali Zardari had also played a role in attempting to convince Malik Riaz to testify against Imran Khan in the Al Qadir Trust case on one occasion. However, the development could not proceed, Syed said.

Syed alleged that following the orders of PM Shehbaz Sharif, Malik Riaz’s name was recently removed from the Exit Control List (ECL) along with 300 politicians. “He was a free man; nobody stopped him, so he went abroad,” the journalist added.

  • Ooh Lala; National Stadium Karachi’s new enclosures named after two legends

Ooh Lala; National Stadium Karachi’s new enclosures named after two legends

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to dedicate enclosures at the National Bank Cricket Stadium in Karachi, to two legendary cricketers from the coastal city: Boom Boom Shahid Afridi, fondly called Lala by his peers, and fan-favourite former captain Younis Khan.

Additionally, a newly constructed Patron Enclosure will be named in honour of cricketing greats Zaheer Abbas and Majid Khan, further recognizing the contribution of iconic players to Pakistan cricket.

Both Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore and the National Bank Cricket Stadium in Karachi are undergoing significant renovations ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

The seating capacity of Gaddafi Stadium has been increased to 35,000 with the installation of new seats throughout the venue.

Additionally, 480 state-of-the-art LED lights have been added to enhance the broadcast quality and viewing experience. Two large digital replay screens will also be installed in the coming week, while the construction work is expected to be completed by the end of January.

Similarly, Karachi’s National Bank Cricket Stadium is being revamped. A new enclosure for players and officials has been built, alongside the installation of 350 LED lights. Two digital replay screens have already been installed, and 5,000 new chairs have been added to the seating arrangement. The PCB curators, led by Australian curator Tony Hemming, are also working to improve the pitches and outfields at both venues.

The  Champions Trophy, often referred to as a Mini World Cup, will begin on February 19, 2025, in Pakistan.

This marks the first time since the 1996 ICC ODI World Cup and the 2008 Asia Cup that Pakistan will host a major ICC event.

India’s matches, however, will be played in the UAE due to a hybrid model agreement between Pakistan and the ICC. As per this agreement, all international events between Pakistan and India until 2028 will take place at neutral venues. India will play their opening match on February 20 against Bangladesh in Dubai.

India has not played a match in Pakistan since the 2008 Asia Cup, and no bilateral series have been held between the two nations since Pakistan toured India in 2012-13. The 2023 Asia Cup also followed a hybrid model, with India’s matches played in Sri Lanka.

Despite tensions, the PCB remains committed to delivering a successful tournament that adheres to international standards and protocols.

This Champions Trophy holds special significance for Pakistan, as the team enters the tournament as defending champions. Pakistan last won the event in 2017 under the leadership of Sarfaraz Ahmed, defeating India in a historic final.

  • Imran Khan, Malik Riaz, and Gen Asim Munir; Umar Cheema reveals what went wrong between them

Imran Khan, Malik Riaz, and Gen Asim Munir; Umar Cheema reveals what went wrong between them

Renowned journalist Umar Cheema has alleged in a recent YouTube vlog that the then DG-ISI Lt Gen Asim Munir was removed from the spy agency’s top post in 2019 after expressing grievances about property tycoon Malik Riaz to then-Prime Minister Imran Khan.

Cheema was referring to recent developments as the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) cautioned the public on Tuesday against investing in Bahria Town’s new real estate project in Dubai. It also added that the Pakistani government was reaching out to the United Arab Emirates to seek Malik Riaz’s extradition.

“Malik Riaz is the reason why then DG ISI Gen Asim Munir was transferred as Corps Commander Gujranwala and it was Malik Riaz that became the point of contention between Imran Khan and Gen Asim Munir,” claimed Umar Cheema.

Malik Riaz is co-accused in the infamous Al-Qadir Trust case in which Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi were recently convicted with sentences of fourteen and ten years respectively.

Last year in May, Malik Riaz posted a cryptic social media post stating that he was facing “pressure” to take a political side but vowed not to be used as a “pawn for political motives”.

After the recent statement by NAB cautioning the public about Malik Riaz’s new real-estate project in Dubai, the property tycoon issued a strong statement on his social media handles, stating: “This was my decision yesterday and this is my decision today, no matter how much you oppress me, Malik Riaz will not testify!”

Malik Riaz in a long X post, yesterday, issued a mysterious warning: “Today’s deplorable press release by NAB is actually a new demand for blackmail. I am resisting, but I am sitting with a storm in my heart. If this breaks, then everyone’s illusion will be put into reality. Let’s not forget that all the secrets of the last 25/30 years are safe with evidence.”

Journalist Umar Cheema while discussing the recent post by Malik Riaz, revealed: “Malik Riaz has a very interesting trade that throughout his life whenever he’s given something to any person, he brings it on record in front of a few people. He is famous for never keeping a secret.”

Cheema revealed the reason behind the controversy with Malik Riaz, stating: “The main problem is that Malik Riaz has sucked out maximum profits from real estate schemes in Pakistan. Now he isn’t as dependent on Pakistan given the new project starting in Dubai. What is worrisome for the agencies and the government is that people are shifting their capital to Dubai following Malik Riaz’s new project there.”

Cheema opined: “We used to hear about Pakistan’s capital shift towards Portugal, Saudia Arabia, Turkey and United Kingdom. In fact, I’ve personally investigated the UK properties and Pakistanis are in the top three property owners in the UK. Haider Naqvi reported a few days ago that security agencies of Pakistan collaborated in data integration with some of the countries mentioned and now whenever Pakistanis buy properties in these countries, it raises a flag among Pakistani authorities.”

Journalist Umar Cheema also claimed that those people who are investing in Malik Riaz’s Dubai project in have been warned by Pakistan’s security agencies.

Juvaria Abbasi stuns fans with romantic getaway to Amsterdam

What’s the best place for a romantic getaway with a special someone? Some would say Paris, others would say Barcelona but for Juvaria Abbasi, its Amsterdam.

The Pakistani TV actress recently gave her fans a dreamy glance at her romantic getaway to Amsterdam with husband Adeel Haider.

Juvaria’s latest Instagram posts show her and her husband enjoying the beautiful sights of Amsterdam. From cozy cafes to gorgeous canals, their romantic getaway is holiday goals. She also shared moments from family weddings and her birthday celebrations, giving fans a look into her happy life.

Fans have been commenting with love saying, “Whenever I see you’re pics I become so happy for you. MashAllah .

A fan commented, “Juhi tum aaj bhi utni cute ho jitne salma sitare keh waqt thi. .

Juvaria Abbasi and Adeel Haider tied the knot on March 15, 2024.

Earlier Adeel and Juvaria appeared as guests on Gup Shup with Fuchsia where both talked about their first meeting.

“We met over dinner at a common friend’s place and obviously, I had seen Juvaria first,” Adeel told host Rabia Mughni.

“So, it was nice. We had a good conversation, and it started well,”  Juvaria added.

“We spent a little extra time with each other to get to know each other better, because, obviously, it was difficult for her to decide, especially with the comments coming in and everything happening around us. So, naturally, there were concerns, you know, about how society perceives these things. Her daughter is growing up, and the time for her marriage is approaching.”

The host asked, “You didn’t know who she was when you met her?”

Haider said, “When we met for the first time, I had no idea who you were. I had no clue at all because I don’t watch TV or Pakistani dramas. No one around me even mentioned it to me. We never discussed what’s happening in the dramas. So, since I didn’t watch them, I never discussed it either. So, I knew her, but when we spoke, we had a lot of conversations, and I really found her to be a very interesting person. That was the starting point, I just wanted to know more about her. Then the entire night went by, and for the next two nights, I kept trying to find out on Google who she was. Then I realized, oh, she is someone.”
